at least its not that horrible disqus solution some sites are implementing.

This video is what has convinced me to get a Playbook instead of the iPad 2. Was undecided for a good while now. Thanks

Kevin, You quickly mentioned the file browser over bridge, but i understand that your version of the OS was kinda buggy to show off. Do you know if its going to be possible to save media from the PlayBook to the SD card on your BlackBerry? This would be great for taking pictures and videos since the PB doesn't have an SD card.

Thanks for all the videos. I cant wait for the 19th!

Nick

Funny how Kevin said he likes the touch screen, big blackberry etc comment. I'm sure he didn't mean in the sense that he'd rather get a touch blackberry and instead will continue to get Bold devices with the keyboard :)

Posted by firmdot Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Also, the Bridge Build didn't seem to have BBM...?

Posted by ericlc2 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

edit:
PS. Note, there's no BBM in the video as it's not present yet on the pre-release version of the Bridge I'm using. We're told an updated version of the BlackBerry Messenger phone app is required for it to work on the Bridge, which isn't released yet. It should be there on launch day or shortly after.

Kevin,
Thanks for the video! Makes me feel much more hopeful for the Playbook.
Although - there is a app on AppWorld called "Tether Bridge" and was wondering if you could try and free trial version included.
I'm assuming its much like the beloved Tether app and wouldn't be surprised if it was by the same team, or if its foreshadowing an extension that Tether might release soon.

Cheers!

I'm curious - I have a BB with tethering plan via corporate issue. When I pair with the PlayBook via Bridge - will there be any advantage in terms of speed when using Bridge Internet Browsing vs. Tethered Interenet Browsing or is it the same?

I noticed some lag when Bridge was in place for viewing calendar / emails. Still - it is real time which is cool - but, I hope it gets smoother / snappier with newer builds of the OS. I played with one today at Best Buy and was amazed at how fluid it was. I would hate to have it be laggy when doing Bridge...

Posted by BerryExcited Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I'm pretty sure that the speed will most likely be the same between Bridge Browsing and Tethered Browsing because its using the same Bluetooth protocol and the outgoing information from your phone would be most likely be identified with its respective uses: Bridge Browsing would be identified to the carrier as your Blackberry's native browser. Tethered Browsing would be identified to the carrier as a tether modem usage. But, I've been wrong before. I wonder if a micro-USB to micro-USB will work for bridging the Blackberry and Playbook to drop lag incurred by Bluetooth.

I believe it's RIM's game plan from the get-go that no data is actually located on the Playbook, meaning no real local buffering on the Playbook = lag, though I think with the newer phones, compression and encryption of the information might happen quicker (processor, RAM) bringing snappier performance. Then again, from what I've heard the next 60 days will be exciting for Playbook owners.

Posted by san4berry Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

if this is just a mirror of the blackberry phone, not quite sure how bridge browser will be able to display flash sites.

Also I can also see the carriers pressuring rim to lose this feature as they are losing money. just my thoughts!

Posted by BerryExcited Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

It will mirror the contacts, emails, etc... but for browsing it'll send the data information to the Playbook which will be able to interpret Flash and the pull further information down, etc... It won't 'exactly' mirror the web-browser, just mimic its route/request for information.
Its the same idea that carriers were hating the idea of BIS but thats the benefit having a Blackberry. Its something like this that is supposed to draw the person to Blackberries but I'm sure the carriers won't mind all that much given the compression saves much more on data incurred by the carrier versus other phones using less of a compression method.

Posted by miketko Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

the carriers aren't losing money, they just aren't making extra money off us, which of course will piss off carriers.

Posted by feldmen01 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

You're using the browser of the playbook, not the BBOS browser so flash should show up just fine. Think of it as the playbook is just installing a very fancy web browser on the phone, just like you can install Opera, it's just being displayed on a larger screen.

Posted by jsn204 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

i think if you manually disconnect the bridge and if you tap a greyed out bridge icon, a message should popup asking if you want to reconnect

Posted by daeji5 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

i have the tether app for my 9700.

now, let's just say that tether made an app for the playbook and I was able to use the tether app w/ my 9700 to access the internet. Would my carrier be able to monitor or charge me for this?

Posted by BerryExcited Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Probably not. The idea is that the Tether app masks the data requests as BIS related information. Sure if they saw 5gb of information run through BIS out of nowhere, they might get suspicious. Otherwise it would be the same idea for Phone-Playbook as Phone-Laptop, the application would just be migrated to the QNX OS (probably without much trouble).

Posted by mickeyboat Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

With bridge tethering, will Flash be availiable? With bridge tethering, does it use the Blackberry browser or the Playbook browser? I am still confused.

Posted by BerryExcited Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Should be. Bridge tethering uses the Playbook's native browser which interprets information send to the phone. Where the Phone's browser would interpret it as an error, the Playbook's browser would interpret it as Flash and then draw additional information via the phone as needed.

Posted by mrocchealth Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

how r u confused, he just showed u:S ur default browser will always be the playbook as long as ur using the playbook via bridge. so yes, flash will still be avail

Kev i have to say, if RIM is not paying you, THEY BETTER F'ing START PAYING YOU! I think u and ur team single handily Sold more PB than RIM its self. All these videos ur putting out are making every other reviewer in the industry look like baffons!!! Ive read almost every single review out there and i swear they all need links to CB to fully understand what this device can do. If you were sitting beside me right now i would give u the biggest hug u'll ever get in ur life(no homo) just because ur F'ing good at what you do! Once again, Long Live BB, long live BBM!
PS. R U Canadian? Cause if ur not, i will give up my citizenship for u! or Marry u so u can get citizenship(No homo;) lol

Posted by bek816 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Is there a tether versus bridge performance difference? Is one faster than the other?

Posted by robtanz Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I assume that you can attach a file from the Playbook(or even one from your Blackberry) to an email sent via the bridge email. Anyone know for sure?

Posted by BerryExcited Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I hope so. Or that Bridge File Manager is a goddamn tease...

Posted by djkbb Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

How does the Bridge app react to BBs with encryption turned on? Do you have to unlock the berry or can you unlock via the Bridge functionality on the Playbook?

Posted by Barredbard Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I fear, given the slight lag and all, that using the internet via the 'bridge' connection will be a hellish experience.

Posted by mrocchealth Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

nahhh it will be fine. im thinking, will there be a point to getting a 3g or 4g version of the device if u bridge to the internet as long as u have ur phone with u. example if u are on a 4g network wouldnt u get 4g speed with all connections?

Posted by zensen Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

It definitely won't be better than wifi or a direct usb connection to the internet but in the circimstances where u have no access to wifi and need. Bigger screen it'll be better than nothing. Also here's they integrate the apps and othe native software to the bridge browser when you've got a connection between the bb.

Kevin,
I just watched your video. Thanks!
You just sold another PlayBook.

Posted by EarthRyno Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

That makes me so happy! I read that you couldn't use the internet from bridge, but apparently that was in regards to non-blackberry devices. If this browser shapes up before too long, I can see myself absolutely buying a PlayBook and keeping my Torch with the reward of saving money from not paying for tethering or another plan for a tablet!

Posted by Swedo Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

In near future, using the Blackberry Bridge, will sms and mms get mirrored as well on the playbook?

Posted by gyubok Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I was debating between this and ipad but ill go with this now!

Posted by WillieLee Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Jeez, it's almost as if RIM was offering their enterprise customers a way of deploying tablets that would require no extra security or data plans. This is a point RIM made when they launched the PlayBook that still seems to be flying above the heads of the reviewing crowd.

No tether with no extra charges makes for a very attractive package.

Posted by drparham Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

thank you so much kevin for tackling the elephant in the room prolly the best post in recent weeks

Posted by BBOttawa Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Man, if only RIM knew how to market and communicate what a cool device the Playbook actually is it would sell like crazy! Good stuff Kevin.

I have to agree with an earlier poster though, I highly doubt the Playbook browser will be rendering the webpages, it will probably be the phone's browser doing it, in which case you will NOT get Flash on the Playbook when surfing through bridge. The reason I suspect that is the phone's browser will make the connection to the website and send the browser ID string saying I'm a Bold 9780, not a Playbook, so the website will not send the Flash etc. info to the phone, so the PB will not be able to show it?

Hope I'm wrong, but that would be some fancy coding if they got it to pass through pages the phone could not render, so that the PB could do it...

Posted by velkcro Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

thats all they need to do market the hell out of this device not only to business people but even to my grandma

Posted by BBOttawa Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Ok, I just re-read the post by BerryExcited and see what he's saying...so it should play Flash if that is correct. The only issue I see is that you may get served the mobile sites instead of the full one's as the it's the 9780 phone id string getting sent to the website...easy way to fix that is to change the id string that it sends on the phone, can you do that on a BB? Worst case you get the mobile site then click the link to the full site that most pages offer you.

Looking amazing, I think RIM is walking a fine line and not publicizing this too much to not piss off their carrier partners, if they're smart they'll highlight this feature in their sales packages they give to stores, but not full page advertise it in newspapers so as to get pushback from Verizon etc.

Posted by asherwiin Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

What a truly compelling (if not brilliant) business value proposition.

Do the math - companies with employees armed with a Blackberry and a Playbook will cost substantially less than other phone/tablet options that requie a data plan for the tablet. with RIM, they could potentially save hundreds of dollars per year by eliminating thd need for a tethering plan.

RIM is just now starting to talk up this feature (much to the chagrin of the carriers, i suspect, now i understand the massive retail distribution strategy vs. selling through just carriers.)

Once companies do a total cost of ownership comparison, i think Apple's iPad/iPhone combo will get blown out of the water.

Posted by tking213 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Kevin, thanks for this, it is what I had believed I was getting as far as internet browsing FOR FREE is concerned, but the doubters kept telling me I was wrong! This, for me; is the answer to the question "Why don't you want to buy an Ipad?" No tethering fees is HUGE!!!

Posted by feldmen01 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Kudos on making the "C" in the "Crackberry.com" movie star voice over at the beginning of the video more prominent. I always planned on complaining that it sounded like "rackberry.com" but I never got around to it.

Keep up the good work!

Oh yeah, playbook looks awesome too!

Posted by sufan Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I hope RIM survives. My company is leaving them for iOS. The playbook sounded good at first but this bridge concept and no native email or calendar seems like a deal breaker. The CEOs at RIM need to talk to consumers.

I'm an IT director and I have 30 requests this month asking if an employee can get an iPhone or iPad. We have 500 BES users on blackberry's but they all seem to want something else.

Posted by feldmen01 Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Did you bother to watch the video? Bridge looks solid with added features and security that no apple product can offer.

Posted by mrocchealth Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

You lie, ur no IT director. what it director spends their saturday on crackberry arguing about getting bb products. LIAR! ur probably the bottom feeder trying to get to the Director position. cause what ur saying doesnt make sense and b u didnt even watch the video...shows ur leadership skills

Posted by jasperlin Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

dude, you must be kidding me. MAKE them use the playbook first and show them the features.

Playbook is number 1 priority over at RIM. they're going to make some pretty awesome stuff happen on it, as they already have.

Posted by Kiddo2050 Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

Please tell us what your company name is. I suspect you are a teenager apple fan boy. You have 500 users on BES and a few want iPhones so your company is leaving RIM. Not credible.

Plus you are an IT officer and you don't understand the Bridge. Pathetic. Does your company understand that when you switch to iPhones and iPad your costs are going to skyrocket? No your company doesn't care about the extra costs because my guess is you are a fake. No serious company would make this decision for the reasons you give here.

Your post is total BS.

Posted by mrocchealth Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

+10 DUDE IS TOTALL BS! After i called him out he didnt come back. "IT Director" what a joke!

Posted by sufan Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

That's great if everyone owns and wants to use a blackberry smart phone. I am not a RIM basher we are a customer. Just dont get them anymore or their strategy.

Posted by Kiddo2050 Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

All of these comments are stupid. Last quarter RIM made more money and shipped more phones than ever in their entire history.

Just don't get them anymore? The goal of a company is to make f-ing money! what don't you get?

What you should be saying is you don't get that the American media can't pull their heads out of their asses and realize that when you sell something in Asia you make just as much money as selling it in the US. That Asia has far far far far greater growth potential than North America.

RIM should tell your (fictitious) company to go take a flying F, they probably signed up 5 to 10 companies the size of yours in Indonesia last week.

Good luck moving to iOS, we tried that experiment a year ago. It's not cheap and you are going to lose a ton of management of your devices.

Realize you will also be now supporting iTunes on desktops as well credit cards for iTunes accounts. Apple provides no central billing or official corporate support. A handful of iOS devices for executives is one thing, hundreds deployed has some major obstacles. How will you manage key iOS updates? All require to USB connection to iTunes. Your going to trust users actually do that? And it will work?

The beauty of BES is it just works, yes it has a cost but for all it provides nothing on the market even comes close (I know as we had to put in Good Technology to have some control for iOS devices).

The best thing we ever did is stated "Yes we will support iOS devices - you need to pay for it though". Pretty much put a stop to requests. Funny how when personal cost is involved the tune changes.

Posted by Xavier666 Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

You're right. If I'm reading that part about Bridge Files correctly. Using your BB to "expand" the memory of the Playbook looks to be a hit.

I was going to buy the 32 gig version, but maybe I'll save that 100 bucks for a sweet accessory down the line.

I hope the connection is quick enough to play MKV files and the like. :)

Posted by zensen Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

This is great but could have easily been cleared up in your last article about the differences. Looking at the last article you had people confused about the web/internet icon in the bridge and many felt u couldn't use your bb internet plan for "free" unless of course and were wanting out unless you weren't sure yourself . I only really knew when anand finally stated it in their article.

Love the bit about the bridge files. That's going to make a lot of ppl happy esp with sd cards in their phones as that also had ppl rethinking

For all blackberry users on OS 5+ will see the advantage of pairing it with a playbook and hopefully that feature extends onto their apps!

even if you dont have one it still complements other phone models in the tethering department.
if they were ever able to connect a usb modem to a playbook and my pc then I'd have more use for that!

Posted by Kevin Michaluk Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I was confused in the last article still.... it's only now, since getting officially briefed and getting bridge that had Bridge Browser that the FULL story finally came together.  very confusing for everybody, including me.

Posted by claffeeba Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Any major differences e.g. Performance in using bridge with an os5 vs os6 device?

Posted by zensen Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Probably not, the software is very similar and you'll be relying more on the connection which will give u access to your files. Everything else is handled on the playbook and from the looks of it, it looks very simple to bridge a connection.

OMG, I want my tablet now!!! I cannot wait any longer... This tablet makes more sense than any tablet on the market..... This is awesome!!! Why would anyone who owns a BB phone would want to purchase a 4G tablet, and have to pay a monthly service fee of $25 or more!!! I am glad that RIM is first marketing to the people/companies who own BB phones.

Recent studies have shown that most people who own the 3G iPads have not activated their services because of the cost. Those people purchased the 3G iPads for just in case they might need to use the 3G service. In addition, most people who own iPads, Xoom, Samsung, etc. use WiFi to connect their devices to the internet. Therefore, I don't understand why the critics keep going on about the Playbook tablet not having 3G!!!

April 19th is going to be a very good day.... Passover... Playbook...

Playbook Bridge looks amazing, especially the browser aspect. I had a chance to play with a pb at best buy today. I must say this is an awsome device. Mine is on the way!

Just a few of questions.

1. Through pb bridge will I be able to access the music on my torch?
2. How will this affect the battery life on my torch (not a deal breaker)?
3. When I access pics from my torch will I be able to save them on my pb?

Posted by chiefbroski Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Great questions! I think the battery life issue would be the same issue as just having bluetooth on, but maybe streaming a song from your phone would take more a little more, probably not a deal breaker.

I think the Playbook Bridge feature will eventually answer yes to both your first and last questions though. Its all been done before and shouldn't be rocket science for RIM at this point.

Posted by spencerdl Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Thanks for clearing up alot of misconceptions. This was extremely educational. Oh by the way, according to a Sprint tech manger, they will NOT be charging for tethering.

Posted by narfit Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

I'm not so sure that the Bridge Browser is going to be a full sidestep of tethering fees. It looks like the Bridge Browser is for VPN tunnelling through the BES' MDS connection service... which means that only those sites that match URL patterns defined in the BES will be tunnelled through. Now, sure, an organization /could/ choose to tunnel *all* traffic through its BES, but that has potential to choke the BES and the corporate internet connection. Besides, any apps loaded on the PlayBook itself won't have internet access - which just won't fly.

Posted by Jagga Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 401 days ago

Kevin,

Great post! I'm usually critical of yours (I'm hoping you put the items more into focus in the camera next time around.

Honestly great information - this is what CRACKBERRY ADDICTS need!!

Now I'd like to know about the Bridge File Browser … can you copy items back & forth between the two units? IF so and you edit a powerpoint or word/excel item on the PlayBook, and you transfer it back will it prompt you to accept the new file (to be replaced) on the BlackBerry (or vice versa)?!

inquiring minds NEED to know.

PS: what about file protection on either?
What about deleting multiple files by selecting in a group/row or a "Delete All" within a folder being viewed on either device?

Posted by b121 Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 401 days ago

Thanks Kevin! The file sharing has me pretty excited, provided you can read media from your SD card. With regard to the tethering vs bridge, it seems to me there is a big difference. The web browsing option is awesome, especially for bes customers whom want access to their intranet. One could certainly save money without tethering, but I'd assume pandora type apps, gps map apps and many other data features would not work without a tether plan. I have one anyway to tether my pc to my bb and can see how it might be less critical to some with bridge available, but also don't think it sounds like a complete replacement. Do you or others agree? (sent from my blackberry)

Posted by Jimcmf Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 401 days ago

Can't wait till I get the BB phone with QNX software. This Bridging will be razor fast!
Thanks for the demo Kevin. Why doesn't RIM put out videos like you do. They would sell these things like hotcakes! I think that is what they need to do. Or will their up coming commercials be doing that? Hummmmmmm ..... ;-D

Just incase someone is keeping track, mark me down for a 32GB Playbook this Tuesday.

Posted by gravymonster Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 401 days ago

But wahhhh there's no native email. Who wants free internet.. The screen's too small. I need 20,000 apps of which I'll probably install 5, of which 4 are probably in app world... I heard Mike L. didn't finnish his vegetables at dinner... Wahhh..

Sorry. These comments were just way to positive. Had to keep everyone in line.

Do you think the browsing will work on EDGE ? or only 3G ?

Posted by zzrogue Monday, Apr 18, 2011 399 days ago

I don't see why not. The only issue would be the speed as usual.

Posted by Dinodeal Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 401 days ago

This video has convinced me to pick up my 32G PB from Best Buy on Tuesday. I was debating between the iPad 2 and the PB like many others. The size of the PB and the bridge aspect have sold me on the product. FYI....i have an ipad now and just like many others on this site I hardly ever use it during my day to day in the field, usually it's a device I'll take on long flights or on weekend getaways, but i'm not whipping it out at my local Starbucks to be productive.

lol .... The iPad is way too big to be carrying around in public. People who use the iPad in public are lost and appear to have a problem.
Now on the other hand, using a PlayBook in public shows your important, and have constructive things to do.

Besides, the 7 inch version fits nicely into the dash of the millions of cars being sold every year. The iPad .... sorry .... you're too big.

There was a write up that stated that the next version of PlayBooks will be used as a GPS and a movie player (movie player can only be viewed from the passengers seat) in almost ALL future autos. Can anyone say ..... stero system ......as well.

There is no direction but up for RIM !

Take your pick.

I'm super excited about the playbook - the video solidifies my decision that I will be buying the device.

Now, what is the point of tethering on the phone if we already have bridge browsing etc? There just doesn't seem to be a point to tether anymore. Can anyone please clear this up. thanks.

Posted by Jimcmf Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 401 days ago

Tethering is for those who don't have a BB. Then you need to pay your carrier a few extra $$$. If you were smart enough to make your phone choice a BB, then you Bridge it, thus no extra $$$ to the carrier.

If you don't have a BB, junk your current phone, and jump aboard. There is so much more to come, and you don't want to be left out. Do you?

I can't wait to get my PB, however; I really hope they come out with the following features in the near future: Free Turn-byturn Nav, BBM Video calls and universal search. Laslty, here are a few hardware upgrades I think all Blackberry followers want to see in the next PB: 8.9" screen, Full size HDMI and USB (3.0), Blutooth 3.0, expandable memory (full size SD card slot) and rear camera flash.

As a RIM shareholder, i am pissed off to read about this in detail here on this site. Do not misunderstand me... I am not mad at CB but rather at RIM and their incompetent marketing department. They are MIA. So the engineers and project managers are probably working 24/7 to get the S/W all touched up but what about the guys that should be SELLing this device. In my opinion, they should completely overhaul their Sales and Mktg group if this company is going to survive. And S&M is not just about selling and marketing but also about really understanding the consumers' needs and translating this info back into their roadmaps... I bet, if they hire Kevin and a couple of other folks on this site, they would do a better job for the RIM shareholder and guarantee that RIM will be around in 10 years...

Thanks CB for stepping up and filling the void!

I do not own stock in RIM, however I agree with you. I have learned more from Crackberry then the BB website or anywhere else. The story should have been told is a very clear way. The marketplace receives the first impression, then it's over.

Double Bogey to the RIM marketing team.

Posted by Jimcmf Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

Absolutely Right. Kevin is the man ! I learn more from him, and my co BB users then from RIM unless I hunt for information.

A not to RIM - Creat a site that shows you all the neat things that you can do with your BB, and with products that are coming out on the market. I don't think that it will take a lot of money. Then call it ...... hummmmmmmm .... how about Crackberry. Better yet, why not buy out Kevins site for a few hundred million !

Posted by Dezz01 Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

Yeah, at least they should have Kevin and his crew on contract. If companies can contract Gilford Godfrey with Aflac (well not anymore), Paul Marcarelli with Verizon (can you hear me now guy), and Kim Kardashian with Vanilla Cupcake Mix, WHY NOT Kevin and Crew with RIM. Just saying. Kevin and Crew has done more for RIM than the entire RIM Marketing team has done in 6 months. :)

Have to say that weather app looks sweet. I hope there are a lot more programs that give us eye candy for the playbook. All the native programs look good, I wonder if we have to wait for the Native SDK for developers to create good looking programs.

I don't really care about the number of apps, just give me useful stuff that looks good.

Kevin thanks for that real amazing walkthrough. What about video calls can it be done without wifi? on the bridge connection to my 9780? And skype?

Isn't tethering free in Canada on Rogers for any data plan 1GB or above? So this free bridge tethering would only apply to Americans. Rogers customers with 1GB+ data plans should be able to tether the PlayBook to even an iPhone without additional cost.

Posted by artlane3 Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

I had a TMobile unlocked and Rogers wouldn't let me tether, even when I upgraded to 1G data.

I got my new Torch from Rogers and am very happy with tethering.

Just saying its not that automatic up North.

Posted by elle-ade Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

Sorry luv, tethering is NOT free in Canada, I believe if you have a data plan above 1G with Rogers they do not charge you to tether, but that's pretty much it.

What my carrier, Bell, is planning is to charge between 20 and 50 bux for an extra data plan for your tablet. Sooo not happening, right?!

BB Bridge all the way!

What I want to know is, will I be able to move files from my Playbook to the PC via WiFi or Bluetooth? If so then no need to get 32G, right?

Posted by Dezz01 Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

Whoa, unless I am wrong Bridging and Tethering through your carrier are two different things. Bridging should be for all if you are using a BlackBerry phone. Simply put, your phone calls for the data (not the PB), and displays the outcome on your phone and on the PB as if the PB is a Big Screen TV. The PB does not call for the data. Therefore, your wireless service will never know you are using your PB to display information, they think its your phone calling for and displaying the data.

With Tethering, the PB would call for the data through the phone, with its (PB) own id, and the phone would simply be a middle device for connecting to the wireless (data) network. Therefore, your wireless service would not only already charge you for your data plan but they will also charge you for a tethering data plan for your PB.

Kevin, do you think there is any chance that site like Cnet will provide this information to us, or do you think this will remain a blackberry "secret" I hope other site will talk about this amazing feature.

Posted by jonno_atamaniuk Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

All this talk of tethering charges makes me so incredibly glad that my carrier of choice will not charge for tethering of any kind for the playbook :D Yay, the future really is friendly.

Thanks Kevin. I've read a lot of reviews on other blog sites regarding the Playbook, and I've noticed several slanted comments. They (people) say it does not have a lot of apps, you can't get on the internet w/o wi-fi, and there is no native blackberry email. Then they compare it to the ipad. But I usually respond, if it doesn't have the app go to the actual website to view content (duh), there are actually three ways to get on the internet (wi-fi, Bridge, or tethering), and why would email, and calendar need to be native on the PB (or have its own) when it actually is a big mirror for your BlackBerry phone (why have two separate units with the same information). It seems that the only individuals that care about native BB email and calendars are Apple people. Should they care, they don't usually have BlackBerries. But anyway, I've just realized how ill informed people can be. Maybe someone will blame this on Obama. lol!!!!!

Hey Kevin, just wondering if the file sharing between the blackberry playbook and PC through wifi is any good. You didn't really mention much about it but I found a video on showing how it worked. It shows that the playbook pops under your network so you can drag and drop files right onto it. How efficient does this work. You seem to contradict in some places where you said that you have to connect it via usb, but lot of places saying otherwise. Can you please clarify, thanks!

Posted by jamesd98ca Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

Direct wifi transfers (movies, photos, etc) work very well. Just drag and drop....

Sweet, sounds good, I'm officially sold.

Posted by Jimcmf Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

Ok you 70 Million BB users. We need to prove everyone wrong. Rush out on Tuesday April 19th to purchase a PlayBook. Lets make this the talk about, "whos your daddy" tablet of the year.

RIM is going to have some pretty neat updates coming down the pipe, so don't worry about not having enough to do. 3,000+ apps will take you long enough to download until then.

I heard that the PalyBook is a lot better then what people are giving it credit for.

Just because of the Bridge for the browser, I finally decided that I'm getting a Play Book!

Posted by elle-ade Sunday, Apr 17, 2011 400 days ago

my big question is: will I be able to download and/play PC games on the Playbook? I luuurv PC games :)

Posted by The Consigliere Monday, Apr 18, 2011 400 days ago

Bridge Browsing just made my day! That pretty much sealed the deal on whether or not I'm getting a Playbook. Now to finish saving up the money! A new & new son on the way kind of depleted my Playbook fund so it'll have to get back up but it's definitely back in the works now. Thanks Kevin, great review.

Congrats on the new addition to your family.

This BB bridge feature was called a band-aid fix at one point, but I believe it was a well thought out feature set that is being quickly implented and will soon reach its potential as the GOTO powerhouse app for the PB

Great article and review. I have my playbook pre-ordered for pickup on the release date. I was on the Blackberry apps world and cannot find the Blackberry bridge to load on my Bold 9780 prior to picking up my Playbook. Has it been released yet or will it be released at same time as the Playbook. Thanks in advance.

The BlackBerry Bridge App will be available for download from BlackBerry App World tomorrow. Until then, you will not see it.

All I really want to know is this: Is processing email on the Playbook any faster or more effective than doing so on the BlackBerry? I mean, is the Playbook "keyboard" better?

Posted by freddysrevng Monday, Apr 18, 2011 399 days ago

Kevin

That was the best "explanation" on this topic. Really well played. Obviously, there will be tremendous value to corporations, and BB users alike, to not only not have to pay for another data plan, but also if your assumptions are correct - to not even have to pay for tethering - HUGE ADVANTAGE BB.

Does anyone knows, if the Playbook supports older BlackBerry devices, like Curve 8320? or only OS6 BB r supported?

Posted by chrisru Monday, Apr 18, 2011 399 days ago

Any way around not having Blackberry Bridge to view mail on Playbook? Our corporate IT policy does not allow 3rd party apps.

Posted by jaya_man Tuesday, Apr 19, 2011 399 days ago

Kevin, now that the PlayBook is here, when will RIM release the latest BBM version?

Posted by BKPruitt Tuesday, Apr 19, 2011 398 days ago

I have tried and tried scanning the code to download the bridge onto my 9550. I am with Verizon and am running version 5.0. All I keep receiving is the "This application is not available on your device or for your carrier" message.

I need my calendar and contacts. If I can't get them up and running, the PB is not much use to me. Any help/suggestions?

Post playbook release i am still getting the "this application is not available right now - the availability will match the launch of blackberry playbook" message on my verizon bb bold, is the official software not out yet or just not on verizon for the bold? anywhere i can get a beta? i actually connected through the tether option without additional charges according to verizon.com but the bridge software they have been promising would be nice...not sure how lo g i will get away with free tethering.

Need to up date this as bridge brower is not the same as the regular brower, at this time.

You still beed to tether if you want full www use.

Hi there! I was wondering if you had any information about when those of us with a Torch and AT&T will be able to use the Bridge. Right now when I try to download the Bridge software, I am told it is not available for my device or carrier. I don't know which, but I have a feeling it is the carrier. The Bridge is the reason I bought the PlayBook and didn't wait for something better (whatever that might be...)

Thanks for your help!

Help! I am using Straighttalk for a carrier. I have the data plan and have already gotten the browser to work on the Bold 9700. When I connect to bridge via Playbook and try to access Bridge Browser, I get an error about tethering that refers me to call 611 or go to the AT&T website. I thought there was no charge for Bridge, as it is not true tethering? Is there a way around this?

Posted by GallagherPreach Tuesday, Aug 09, 2011 286 days ago

Has anyone used the Bridge Browser and been charged an additional fee?

I just got my playbook and plan on using it when traveling instead of my netbook.

Thanks.

Most of these comments are about 6 months old... but i'm hoping that a Yoda is still monitoring the forum-
I'm an AT&T customer, and was grandfathered in on an unlimited data plan... Yahtzee!
Now that the playbook price has dropped considerably, I'm interested in getting one- and with an unlimited plan, tethering is the way to go.
When i asked AT&T about tethering, they said i could do it... but i'd have to dump my unlimited plan, and go to a 'pay as you go' plan. Not gonna do that-
So the question is- as on now (October), does this... ahem... 'work around' still work?
Would like to know prior to purchasing my playbook. (Not sure if it matters, but I'm using a Bold 9700, will probably upgrade to a Torch 4g in about a year...)
The latest things i've seen say that AT&T has effectively quashed the internet bridging ability of the playbook. True?
Thanks so much for any feedback.

Im having difficulties to tether my PB with my Torch (I have an unlimited data plan so I'm not worried about any extra charges) so for now I'm using the BB Bridge, it works pretty decent but is just me or it's slower than a tether conection??? or it has the same speed???

so I bought a PlayBook a few weeks ago & bridged it to my BB 9000. The emails, contacts, calendar worked great. when I clicked on the browser it said I had to buy a tethering plan from AT&T. I got disgusted & returned the PlayBook. Now I see the new version should work. I'm waiting till the bugs get worked out before I try again. Great video, Kevin. I have learned more form this website than anywhere else!!

Posted by boldkeyboardholic Tuesday, Dec 27, 2011 146 days ago

as the vid is old - does this mean the Bridge need a tethering plan? :'(

(just got to this article via the PB Christmas 2011 one.

Posted by zoso2 Tuesday, Dec 27, 2011 146 days ago

That's how they want it to work, but you need to download the bridge app OTA from the forum if you want to use it without a tethering plan. It may not work now that you've downloaded what I assume is the 'offial' bridge app (through the app world). As far as I know, that's how they're identifying "tetherers", because i've been using the ota bridge app with my playbook for months on my unlimited plan without any issues or notices from at&t.
