BlackBerry PlayBook 101: Using BlackBerry App World on your BlackBerry PlayBook

BlackBerry App World is the go to for apps on your BlackBerry smartphone as well as your BlackBerry PlayBook. While you've surely been using App World on your phone for quite some time, you'll find both similarities and differences in App World for the BlackBerry PlayBook. All the same features are there - including categories, featured and top lists - but some things are a bit different as well. So if your curious to know just how to use BlackBerry App World on the PlayBook, check out this tutorial to get you started.

Using BlackBerry App World on the BlackBerry PlayBook

Featured Carousel

BlackBerry App World BlackBerry PlayBook

This is the familiar featured list you've seen on your phone. Here you will find the top applications through which you can scroll. Navigation icons on this screen include Featured, Categories, My World, Search and Home.

The Featured screen also contains a subcategory with Newest, Top Free, Top Purchased and Recently Updated.

My World

Much like on your phone, My World connects with your BlackBerry ID and shows all the applications that are installed, unavailable or uninstalled.

Search

BlackBerry App World BlackBerry PlayBook

Plain and simple - use the Search to find applications. You can search terms in both titles and descriptions.

Download and Install

To download and install applications, first navigate to the application. Click the Download button. Enter your BlackBerry ID and password if prompted. The application will download followed by a confirmation message.

Once the download is complete, the application will show under the All tab.

Uninstalling Applications

Applications can only be uninstalled through BlackBerry App World. To do so, navigate to My World. Select the installed application, then choose Delete.

Help

BlackBerry App World BlackBerry PlayBook

The Help screen is located in the top right corner of all screens within BlackBerry App World. Clicking it launches the Help application.

will it work with my Word app, like the iPhone, when one buy application I have it under one account on multiple devices?

I suppose it should, since RIM is going to phase out pins and we will all just use one BlackBerry ID....

Do you use the same Blackberry App Account as your phone? Won't the installed apps be different on your phone and Playbook?

Alex from the RIM Social Team here. You’ll be able to have up to 5 BlackBerry smartphones AND 5 BlackBerry PlayBooks connected to your BlackBerry ID at one time. App World has thousands of BlackBerry Apps available for download, and the number of apps that will work on both BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook is growing day by day (thanks to our amazing ecosystem of developers). So be sure to check the version availability before you download for the best experience.

Don't get too excited - its just a link to the web-based GMail. Fine for me - but not to everyone's taste.

Oh, thanks for the heads up!

Well my original plan was to use the web client anyways until RIM adds the a native email client that doesn't require a BB or a third party application is added.

So this doesn't bother me at all...

I just Pre Ordered my Playbook at Best Buy today. It was just 50 bucks to reserve it plus they put the 50 on a gift card that I can use at anytime. I'm so excited. lol

I'm seeing a lot of apps for useless utilities and games, things I have no interest in. I have yet to see if PB will let me download and read OOo docs ...
