A weekly look at new, exciting, and cool apps to try
Howdy CrackBerry Nation! Hope everyone is enjoying their Friday so far and getting ready for the weekend. It's time once again for the weekly App Roundup. Now I spent my time wisely this week rustling up some new, cool, and helpful applications for all you BlackBerry addicts to try. Be sure to check them out and remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.
One of my most used apps on BBOS was Mobile Checkbook. When searching for a replacement, I came across this transaction and financial management application. This native application originally made a name for itself on the BlackBerry PlayBook and we’ve discussed it before and how useful it is for tracking your transactions for all of your different accounts. Even though the BlackBerry 10 version has been around for a bit, the native experience is smooth, easy to use, and Built for BlackBerry approved. It's filled with an assortment of features including backup/restore, unlimited number of accounts, optional password, scheduled transactions, and reconciliation. For only $1.99 it does a great job at keeping track of your expenses for all BB 10 devices and the PlayBook.
As someone who has spent years trying to train people on using their handset this simple utility tool would have saved me hours of time. Toysoft developed an application that records your homescreen as a video in real-time. What this means is that no matter what you are doing, whether you are opening an app, answering an email, or even giving a tutorial, all of those movements and images are recorded as an MP4 video including audio. This is a quick and easy to use application and perfect for recording demos or tutorials for devices running OS 10.2.
Another one from the suggestion box, this simple and free application is an easy to use transit directions application. Whether you remain in your local area or out for fun, it helps you to get to your final destination using local transportation including subways and buses. Directions are pulled from Bing and the suggestions aren’t too bad from what I saw in both NYC or in my hometown. It’s certainly not a bad alternative for Hop Stop or other similar apps for when you are traveling or when pulling up quick directions when you need it.
To commemorate the release of the latest Thor adventure in theaters, Gameloft has released the official game for legacy BBOS devices. In accordance with the film’s storyline the game has players assume the role of the god Thor in his battle with Malkith and the Dark Elf army. With plenty of missions and hammers to take with you, it is challenging and filled with action. You can grab this for $2.99 at the link for select devices running OS 5 and higher.
Previously available for the PlayBook, this full-featured media player plays a variety of media content including music, videos and pictures from your device, remote PC, or a UPnP/DLNA enabled device (and is compatible with an array of servers including Twonky and MediaTomb). I haven't been able to try all the features, however, if you have been searching for a decent network player to stream content anywhere you have Internet access. While the price may be a tad high for some it offers album art support, full-screen playback, audio visualizations, embedded subtitles, quick seek with swipe gesture, supports multiple formats and codecs, and the ability to record content streamed from KalemSoft Media Streamer. Currently, the PlayBook version is priced at $4.99 (sale) and the BlackBerry 10 version is $6.99 and only supports the Q5, Q10, and Z10. Please note if you already purchased the PlayBook version you’ll have to buy it again.
Fans of slow-moving games that require extensive skill and patience are sure to enjoy this delightful gem. Your goal is to swipe and match your way to evolving an alien species to create the perfect hive. It’s fun, addicting and a sure-fire way to enjoy hours of fun. Did I also mention it’s absolutely free to download? While there are in-app purchases offered to assist with gameplay, those same coins/bonuses can be earned over time. The only downside is its only for the Z10 and Z30.
That's it for this week folks. For more apps and games be sure to head on over to the forums where you will find even more hidden gems to choose from whether it be for BlackBerry 10, BBOS or the BlackBerry PlayBook. Of course, you can always find the latest and greatest top editor's picks in the CrackBerry App Gallery. Are there any apps or games you would like to see? Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments.
