Howdy CrackBerry Nation! Not only is it the first day of a brand new month but also time once again for the weekly App Roundup. Now I spent my time wisely this week rustling up some new, cool, and helpful applications for all you BlackBerry addicts to try. Be sure to check them out and remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.
Beyond Voice Recorder by Bumblebee Computing
While there are plenty of voice recording applications currently available, this simple app comes with extra features not found in the stock one. It offers the option to adjust the recording’s gain to prevent distortion or low volume, waveform display to show volume level, repeat mode, and the ability to playback the whole file or just certain sections. What stands out for me is the ability to trim a clip and save only the portions selected. This is perfect for recording lectures or meetings and only certain portions are required. All recordings are in raw format but users can export into .ogg or .wav extensions and an update is on the way to bring sharing and SD card support. On sale for $0.99 for a limited time, it is compatible with all BlackBerry 10 devices and the BlackBerry PlayBook.
If you’re a fan of poker no doubt you’ve heard of Texas Hold’em. This multiplayer game lets you join tables with millions of real players, either random or with friends. Gameplay itself is pretty straightforward with users choosing a table by buy-in, table blinds or speed. Standard rules apply and turns are timed. The graphics are pretty smooth and even though it is an Android port, there are no issues or lag whatsoever. While users can earn free chips daily, more can be purchased within the application. It’s free to download and definitely an enjoyable time waster. It supports BBOS devices running OS 5 and up, the BlackBerry PlayBook, and the BlackBerry Q5, Q10, and Z10.
Have you ever wanted to unload your troubles but not through your social network? Vent your frustration or share your joy with this diary application that documents your life story. Users can choose to share anonymously or register and create a profile. Whether you wish to spread joy out to the world or rant and rave about the issues going on in your life, this is a great outlet to get out your feelings. Posts can be designated as private or entered into the public list where others can comment and share. The developers have built a solid application (hence the BfB designation) with a stellar UI that is easy to navigate. While it limits you to one post a day, Diaree is a free application for all BlackBerry 10 devices.
If you happen to experience issues migrating your contacts over, be sure to try out this simple and free application to help you sort things out. It allows you to easily import and export your contact lists as CSV (Comma Separated Values) or VCF (vCard) files so that you can transfer back and forth between devices and your computer with ease including contact photos (vCard format version 3.0). There is even an option for you to merge or overwrite duplicate or existing contacts which I'm sure everyone can appreciate. All files are stored to the SD Card or device and I always believe you can never have too may ways to backup your information. It supports all BlackBerry 10 devices.
This application is great for the music and video lovers out there who also multitask. While the native video player pauses your video if you leave the app for any reason (i.e. Check your mail, send a BBM, etc.), this application permits the video to continue playing no matter what task you perform so you'll always hear the audio. Although in order to function properly it needs to remain open as an active frame. There are additional features as well including inserting notes, auto Bluetooth support, bookmarks, and brightness control. This Built for BlackBerry background audio/video player supports all BlackBerry 10 devices.
This handy utility application lets users quickly and easily switch their sound profile regardless of whether your device is locked, password protected or in the holster. Profiles can be changed according to time, calendar keyword, or a one time profile for a select period. It also allows users to select an LED color for their emails, phone calls, and social networking sites. Profile Changer is $2.99 for BlackBerry 10 devices running OS 10.2.
That's it for this week folks. For more apps and games be sure to head on over to the forums where you will find even more hidden gems to choose from whether it be for BlackBerry 10, BBOS or the BlackBerry PlayBook. Of course, you can always find the latest and greatest top editor's picks in the CrackBerry App Gallery. Are there any apps or games you would like to see? Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments.
