BlackBerry App Roundup for March 5th, 2010

The BlackBerry App Roundup
By James Falconer on 5 Mar 2010 03:57 pm EST

Happy March, everyone! Another great week here at CrackBerry, as per usual. Lots of good stuff to talk about, including 25 free copies of 'BlinkWhileCall' from Fabian Heuwieser to give away. Covered this week in the App Roundup are the following titles:

Giveaway of the Week: BlinkWhileCall

Freebies of the Week: Sid Meier's Pirates 'Lite', BatteryWatch, PayPal for BlackBerry

In Case You Missed It: Viper SmartStart Now Available for BlackBerry, Tungle Looking for Beta Testers, VQ Mileage Tracker

New This Week: Count Down, FitDeck Pilates, Radical Draw

Cool at BlackBerry App World: iShoot

Note: Don't forget, you can always search for titles featured in the App Roundup within App World... Some apps mentioned may be available there for your device.

Giveaway of the Week:

This week our bud Fabian Heuwieser stepped up to the plate again to offer one of his apps for free. Well, 25 copies that is. BlinkWhileCall is a small app that modifies your LED light to blink bright purple when you receive a call. This helps you notice an incoming call if you've got your device on silent... Sometimes the default LED notification is a little too dark for some to notice! The app installs with no hassle... once installed, you're good to go. No configuration needed... All you'll need to do is disable the repeat notification when an incoming call comes in (go to profiles > change active profile > disable blinking LED). Also of importance, this one works on the Storm series, Bold series, Curve series and Pearl Flip running OS 4.6+.

If you'd like to enter for your chance to win one of 25 free copies of BlinkWhileCall, answer the following question in the comments:

How many calls per day do you think BlinkWhileCall will keep you from missing?

Leave your answer in the comments now... Good luck!

Freebies of the Week:

Sid Meier's Pirates 'Lite'

Sid Meier's Pirates!

No joke, I used to play this game on my old Commodore 64. Was an awesome game, and still is. The good folks at Concrete Software have brought this classic title to the BlackBerry, and in their 'Lite' version you can play it for free. Granted, it's a demo so you'll get limited gameplay... But if you remember this game and want to give it a spin, there's no better way than with a free trial. Battle in hand-to-hand combat, fire cannon balls at enemy ships, and plunder their gold! Good times!

Check out Sid Meier's Pirates 'Lite' in App World >

BatteryWatch is a very simple app from S4BB that lets you easily monitor/check the following details:

  • Battery Level
  • Battery Status
  • Battery Temperature
  • Battery Voltage
  • Device Name
  • Device PIN

No crazy requirements needed here... it should work just fine on all BlackBerry devices... as long as you're running OS 4.0 and higher... and yes, it should work just fine and dandy on the Storm series.

Pick up BatteryWatch for free >

PayPal for BlackBerry

Bring a whole lot of PayPal functionality to your BlackBerry device. Send money to friends, family or anyone else for that matter, providing they have a PayPal address.  There's even integration with your contact list to make sending the cash quick and easy. 23 currencies are supported, and you can use it to check your balance and account history. Not too much more to say about this one, if you're familiar with PayPal and use it a lot, this may be worth the install... Could make your life a little easier when sending out payments.

Check out PayPal in App World >

In Case You Missed It...

Just in case you missed these titles, below are some apps that were covered in the CrackBerry Blogs this past week. Check 'em out!

Viper SmartStart Now Available for BlackBerry

Viper SmartStart for BlackBerry

Well, it's here! Back in January we first got word that Viper SmartStart would be coming forward with a new app for BlackBerry. The app would allow you to start your car, turn your alarm on and off, and more. Some time has passed, and the whole 'system' is available for purchase, starting at a MSRP of $299. At launch, Viper SmartStart is compatible with the Bold 9700, Tour 9630, Curve 8900, the Storm2 9530, Storm2 9520, and Storm 9500.

Tungle is a new online scheduling service... the goal of the service is to help you get the most out of your time. Call it the productivity tool you never knew you needed :) If you have time management issues, this is an almost must-have, and at the very least, a 'must check out'. At any rate, Tungle is looking for Beta testers, so if you want to give it a spin send an email to bb AT tungle DOT com with your BlackBerry model and OS info.

For more info on Tungle, hit up their website >

VQ Mileage Tracker

VQ Mileage Tracker for BlackBerry

New from Xpressions Inc, VQ Mileage tracker is a new business app for BlackBerry that lets you (automatically) track your business mileage, time and dates. The app uses GPS in combination with Bluetooth to determine when you start and end your tip... And of course, it tracks you along the way. This is extremely handy if you need to put together monthly expense reports for your boss, or if you simply want to bill clients appropriately for time and distance traveled.

VQ Mileage Tracker is available now for $6.99, and a free trial is available. Check it out in our store.

New This Week

Count Down

Count Down

Count Down is exactly what you'd expect it to be... a countdown timer. Enter the event name and the date/time of the event, and Count Down displays the number of days, hours, and minutes until the event. If you're gearing up for that well deserved vacation, preparing for exams, or maybe you don't want to forget about that upcoming birthday... Count Down can help you out. All that is required here is OS 4.5+. Sorry, no Storm compatibility with this one.

Check out Count Down right here >

FitDeck Pilates

FitDeck Pilates

FitDeck Pilates is an ideal companion for anyone into Pilates. Use it to stay motivated, relieve stress, improve your core strength, range of motion and more.

Radical Draw

Radical Draw

Radical Draw is a new touchscreen drawing app designed specifically for the Storm series. Draw on top of images in your device memory, or create your own custom works.

Key features of Radical Draw include:

  • Draw lines shapes or text
  • Select different colors and line weights
  • Includes clip art to help those without artistic abilities create professional looking pictures.
  • Rotate Pictures
  • Email pictures directly from Radical Draw

The developers tell me an update is coming in the near future, an update that will feature new icon packs, MMS support, crop capabilities and much more.

Check out Radical Draw for more info >

Cool at BlackBerry App World:

Arriving in App World in late January, iShoot from Hands-On Mobile brings some classic 'Scorched Earth' style action to your BlackBerry. If you remember this old PC title, chances are you'll want to give this one a spin. The official description:

iShoot is an artillery combat game in which tanks blast each other with a wide range of high-powered weapons, from basic shells and cluster bombs to the world-destroying Shiva Bomb. Take aim against computer controlled opponents or hand off your phone with friends and play together. iShoot s constantly changing gameplay and multiplayer features will keep you playing for hours!

Granted, the pricing on this title is a little high at $6.99... But if you're into classic games, and Scorched Earth was one of your favorites... You may get your moneys worth.

Check out iShoot in App World >

BlinkWhileCall will help from missing call 10 calls. BTW pick me :D

BlinkWhileCall can safe 3 missed calls.

I'm sure BlinkWhileCall will help me get a few more calls a day. Thanks for the contest.

I miss 3 to 4 calls per day.

5 calls per day because I always need to keep my phone on SILENT, not vibrate while at work. It annoys my boss :/

I'm sure Blink While Call will keep me from missing at least 10 calls a day and they will all be critically important.

I miss about 3-5 calls a day because I put my phone in silent mode while in the office. This great app would definitely zero out my missed calls per day.

I miss at least 5 calls a day.

Seriously? You're gonna notice purple, but not red?

I keep my phone on vibrate all the time but still miss calls when it is charging or at home - I guess about 4-5 a week or at least one a day.

I would probably have 10 less missed calls. Being a female firefighter/EMT I think this would be awesome!

blinkwhilecall seems awesome! lol

I miss probably 3-5 calls a day while at work, perhaps this will eliminate those missed calls?? lol

I miss a LOT of calls. Maybe 30-40 a day.. I NEED BlinkWhileCall!

I'd miss maybe 2-3 a day.

I wouldn't miss any call calls. Isn't that the entire purpose of this app?

Halifax Guy

I probably miss 5-7 calls a day.

I always miss about 2-3 calls a day!

I probably miss 3-5 calls a day because I can't keep my phone even on vibrate at work.

Alot of calls because I typically have vibrate on while sitting on my desk (apparently, my Knight Rider ringtone annoys people)!

I will probably only miss 1 call... but that will be my only call and it will probably be important. Curse those phantom vibrations.

Maybe 1 call a week...

4 or 5 a week could be saved.

How many calls per day do you think BlinkWhileCall will keep you from missing?
About 1-2 per day, which makes it an invaluable tool to have. Thanks!

I miss 2 to 3 calls per day

This would eliminate the 8 to 1o calls I miss everyday.

That's bad a$$! So much in fact the wife already said no, so it must be awesome!

looks like a winner.

wudup doe...... let me get that blinker

I miss an average of 5 calls a day. The vibrate on my phone is not loud enough for me to hear but i cant have my phone on loud also with my job I can't always carry my phone. This new LED indicator I know will help me and my favorite color is purple sooo yeah thats all i got

Two calls a day during work, and 3 while I am at home

Due to being required to keep my phone on silent at school, this app would help me see like one or two calls I'd normally miss a day. :)

I think that BlinkWhileCall would keep me from missing about 4-5 calls a day!

Been good to me so far

i say 3 a day at least

It would save me from missing like 4 or 5 a day.

I say 3 calls it'll keep me from missing

I rarely miss calls but I would like to have BlinkWhileCall to make sure I DON'T miss any.

It'll keep me from missing most of my calls. Especially when I forget to take the phone off of vibrate :D

I love crackberry. I miss 5-7 calls per day.

I will not miss any calls with this app. Purple is my favorite color.

On average, I miss 3-5 calls a day...when in alot of meetings has been as high as 10...

BlinkWhileCall will keep me from missing about 5 calls a day.

Happy Birthday guys-here's to many more. As well I'd use this all the time on my 8530 since I work in a very demanding job and it seems I drop my phone all the time.

at least 2-3 calls a day

...this app would be very helpful.

I don't understand why I miss calls sometimes. My berry's always with me and regardless of the profile, I should know when people are calling and sometimes I can't get them. I'm not sure how this app helps, but if it does, it's an important one.

It will keep me from missing all the calls I get. My phone is in silent mode, most of the time!

the blinkwhilecall would save me so many missed calls. i miss about 10 to 15 calls a day, i work all day long so my phone is ALWAYS on silence... Please pick me

It would keep me from missing 10 calls + the bright purple light would be quite fetching and comely - much like the people who run crackberry.

It will prevent me from losing 10+ calls per day.

Hard to answer depends more than likely none...i just want too see it lite up purple. ????

I think it would definitely help me catch at least 2 calls a day...especially when I'm at work

this one looks pretty neat. Thanks again CB!

BlinkWhileCall would definitely help me from missing 10-20 calls everyday without doubt.

For BlinkWhileCall; will probably keep me from missing 5-8 calls while at work. Please throw my name in da hat!!!

i would miss 3-4 blinkwhilecall would be great for me..

I'm thinking maybe 1-4 calls a day would be noticed. I have ppl who will call back to back if I don't answer. Yes I do have my ☎ phone on vibrate sometimes (i.e. While charging at work). I love crack  !

miss about 4 calls a day

At least 1 or 2 per day...

I would say between 5-10 calls per day this little app would save me.

i miss about 2-3 calls..would be very useful!!

I would really like to win something. I never win anything. And if i do ill brag to all my friends and they'll have to buy it :P (jks jks) but i would really like this app

Are now extinct with the BlinkWhileCall......... no missed calls means happier friends and family....

Thanks for the contest.

I miss around 3-5 calls a day.

Blinkwhilecall will keep me fro missing alot of calls.

Blinkwhilecall will help me with a couple of calls a day

Maybe 3-4 calls a day.

BlinkWhileCall--I could use it.

this would be a helpful app.

i miss 3-4 calls a day

I miss about 3-4 calls a day.

i wont miss 2 calls

May I have one please?

I miss probably 3 calls a day.

my phone is always on silent so I miss several calls

I always miss at least one call per day. And some of them are important. Help me =)

BlinkWhileCall would save me from missing 3-5 calls per day.

BlinkWhileCall would save me from missing about 5-6 calls everyday.

I really could use this

I really could use this

I miss about 4 calls a day all because i cant have my phone on a setting where it rings for like 6 hours every day

I just got my phone and I haven't missed too many calls yet but I love purple! I'm hoping this will keep me from missing future calls

cool id love to win this app

cool id love to win this app

oops didnt mean to do that

Hell even if you don't win you can download beBuzz free, that's what i use. Btw, disco flashing LED definitely keeps me from missing calls.

I so wanna win one of these :P

I would say at least 5 calls a day!

I miss too many calls.....

a minimum of 2 or so a day, sometimes more just b/c I put the BB on the truck charger and walk away between locations in town

Will help me not miss about 5 calls a day, when I have my phone on "silent" at work.

I don't remember if I commented on this before, if not then I hope I win!

i don't put it on silent that often.

Oh, and don't pick me for this app. Someone else could put more use to it rather than me. I have an app already that can set different colors for different people. And another app that I can set any color to incoming calls and colors for other types of things. (eg: text, email, im, etc.)

I hope the 25 people who get this actually deserve it. And are not the type of people who just want to win because it's possible and won't put any good use to it. Or someone who is financially stable enough to buy the app without thinking twice over it.

Still lovin' what your doing CB!

He makes the best apps for the simple things!

This app will make me notice two more calls per day

With my work I can not always have my phone right by side and have to have it at my desk or in my pocket. I wold say on average I miss 10-12 calls a day, so Blink would save me 10-12 missed calls.

i think this will help me save 4000 calls a day

This sounds like a great app....

I have school all week so my phones usually on silent... i miss many calls during the day.i think blinkwhilecall will save me 5-6 calls a day.

This would help me from missing 30 calls easy. I always have my phone on silent because of work and always forget when I get home. This would be great!

I miss one or two calls per day.

thanks you so much crackberry and every one else!!!

for the contest. I miss 2 calls a day.

i'd like to win & try BWC

i wannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnt blink

I can't believe I missed this ... hoping to WIN!

Great app would be very good for me and our baby, visual call rather than ringing and waking up our baby!

I use the Disco led setting on incoming call.

Happy Birthday to you (In my best Marilyn Monroe voice).

Since I only have my S2 on Silent during work hours and given that most people know I'm at work and dont call it will probably keep me from missing only 1-2 calls per day. However, given the statement above these could be important calls.

i ant this app so bad pick me

Miss 4 calls due to silent mode from meetings and forgetting to put it back into normal mode.

Is there a more needed website for all things blackberry than crackberry? I think not.

i want one; let me win

Miss maybe one or two a or two too many!

I think I may be the worst phone answerer ever so BlinkWhileCall would probably help me actually notice a call (my phone is always set to vibrate), so I'm thinking maybe 4 calls on average.

I miss at least 4-6 calls per day because I'm not seeing these... this app would be a great asset to me!

Blink while calling looks sweet! It would save me for sure!

sometimes 20 in a day... probably would help if i didn't sleep in the daytime so often

at least a couple a day.

at least a couple a day.

at least a couple a day.

I know this will keep me from missing every single solitary call... with the exception of my parents and the lady claiming to bare my child.

BlinkWhileCall will keep me from missing 6-7 calls a day, and that's clutch!!

I miss an average of 5-10 calls a day!

at least 2 or 3 per day

Blink while call will make me not miss important calls from family members and even emergency calls. The red light is not more noticeable then a bright color like blue or purple etc. I notice my phone when the LCD light is blue. But that's only when my bluetooth is on. Maybe blink while call with change that for me so i don't have to miss anymore calls from no one.

alll of my calls >:D

Probably about 8, max 12

The unfortunate thing is that its usually my wife's calls that I miss!

Probably 3-4 calls I never hear ring

Blink will keep about 8 calls a day from being missed

anywhere from 10-25

I miss calls cause of the phone being on Silent ALL THE TIME!

This app would be useful!

i think forum for blackberry is the cooleast new app this week.

since i have no firends maybe 1!
