BlackBerry App Roundup for February 21, 2014

A weekly look at new, exciting, and cool apps to try

By Alicia Erlich on 21 Feb 2014 09:23 am EST

Hope everyone is enjoying their Friday so far and getting ready for the weekend. It's time once again for the weekly App Roundup. Now I spent my time wisely this week rustling up some new, cool, and helpful applications for all you BlackBerry addicts to try. Be sure to check them out and remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Bookmarklets by SCrApps

I happened to come across this interesting app by resident forums member and developer SCrApps. It involves the use of bookmarklets, which is described as JavaScript commands stored inside bookmarks. What this means is that they add functionality to your web browser. Say for instance you wanted to send an internet page faster than using the share icon. Just use the email bookmarklet and it automatically launches the compose message screen with the site populated in the body. This app comes with a variety of functions, such as getting a QR code, decreasing or increasing image sizes, and its as simple as adding the bookmarklet to your Bookmark list. Available for BlackBerry 10, it only cost $.99 and is another solid offering from SCrApps.

Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing by SEGA of Americas

Growing up with video games, my favorite type happens to be those of the racing variety and I go all the way back to Pole Position on Atari. This addicting gem lets you race as your favorite character through sixteen courses all while dodging traps, firing missiles and competing with your friends. Good news is that you can race against your BBM and Scoreloop friends as well as anyone in the world with online multiplayer mode. The downside is that it is only supports the BlackBerry Q10, Z10, and PlayBook at this time. It's fun, filled with amazing graphics, and is one you certainly won't be able to put down. You can find it at the link for $1.99.

If you are looking for a decent fitness app to track your routine, then this Android port is not a bad choice to check out. It offers several programs including 10K event training, Zero to 10K, Five to 10K, and varying length runs. In terms of features not only does it sync with MyFitnessPal and connects with their cloud service to track your progress, but you can also view detailed statistics on your workouts and create your own playlist from your personal music library. Couch 25K to 5K is a full-featured trial with ads and offers in-app purchases to unlock programs that range from $1.60 to $3.20. It supports all BlackBerry 10 devices and the PlayBook.

Power Clock by David Jones II

One of the features on BBOS I found useful was when I charged by 9900 at the end of the day it launched the clock. For those seeking something similar on BB10, forums member stardomains decided to code an instant preview notification that when pressed opens the Power Clock app to display a full screen dimmable clock.  Users can choose the clock color or set it to random, enable the ability to speak the time, change to 24 hour time, show the date on the active frame, rotate the screen in case you are using a horizontal charger, and turn on/off the option to quit on power disconnect. This is a headless application and requires OS 10.2.1. Be sure to grab it for $.99.

BlackBerry App Roundup for February 21, 2014

I just realized that my Q10 came without a recorder. I've had for a week today.
Thanks for the info, really appreciate it.

arTie's berry "Q10"

I have not found a decent text editor for BB10. One that opens .txt files from the file manager and is also capable of searching an opened text file. Any suggestions?

I'm using this one but it is 5k only. Not any K which is deceiving. Fine for me as I'm working towards that.

Book marking the other when I start going toward a 10K.

Thanks for your support! Multiple plans is always I feature I have had on the roadmap since I built this app, hence the name. A lot of other apps will still sell you the same app with just a different plan. Couch 2AnyK Pro has always been planned to be different. I apologize if it's misleading at the moment. Adding a 10K plan is the next big feature I am working on. Hopefully I will be able to release this update before you start on 10K!

Bookmarklets looks very interesting, the Power Clock app maybe I'd d/l if it was free and I have at least one too many note apps now, this one seems okay.

Hi There:) firstly, to say thank you for an awesome forum.
My first question: On previous BB's, there was features to lock your media files, that when you tried opening it, you would need to enter a password. I'm trying to look for an App for my bbQ10, but can only find one where you put selected pictures into this app?! Is there any app that could put a password on your media files?
My second questions: there used to be an app I had on my 9900 called OS light(something) it was a free app, that did all sorts of things, including ram optimizer, and also had the LED options for calls, messages, BBM as well as whatsapp etc? Any idea if this will become available for BlackBerry OS10's?thanks so much:)
