A weekly look at new, exciting, and cool apps to try
Howdy CrackBerry Nation! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with their friends and family and are getting ready to enjoy the weekend. It's time once again for the weekly App Roundup. Now I spent my time wisely this week rustling up some new, cool, and helpful applications for all you BlackBerry addicts to try. Be sure to check them out and remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.
While multiple alarm functionality came with OS 10.2, that doesn’t mean one cannot utilize a third party application every now and again. Alarm+ is a native and Built for BlackBerry application that allows users to set multiple and recurring alarms with a simple gesture. As someone who is unable to wake up for work in the morning, one feature that stands out is the ability shake or flip your phone face down to snooze, rather than have to tap on the screen. There are other options as well for users to set such as alarm duration, set an LED color, export/import alarms for switching devices, and have the flash light blink for each alarm. You can find it in BlackBerry World for OS 10.1 and higher for $.99. The developer does plan on making this headless, however, as of now it does need to remain an active frame to work properly.
For those looking for a simple utility tool for legacy devices that maximizes the potential of your clipboard there is this app. Not only does it handle multiple entries and give access to the last twenty copied, but it also copies and merges them to paste anywhere you want. There are other functions as well such as searching your clipboard on Google or Wikipedia, translating your clipboard into your own language, look up definitions or call the phone number you just copied. There is a free limited version and a premium one for $.99. It is available for most BBOS devices.
While there are plenty of graphically pleasing puzzle games available sometimes its good to return to the classics. While it offers a simple interface and gameboard, for lovers of the game of chess there are plenty of features not found in other applications. These include the ability to play through grandmaster games in the database, video tutorials on basic moves, databases with players and tournament information, and the option to play against the engine or another person. Free to download, it supports all BlackBerry 10 devices and is a must for anyone who enjoys the game of chess.
While this application isn’t exactly new, it is one I used extensively on my PlayBook for recording notes, pictures, audio, or just to maintain a private diary. As it supports password protection you can be sure no one will have access to your private thoughts and it offers a backup feature as well for your entries. With it's easy to use layout, it aids in organizing all of your notes and allows you to sort them by category as well. Diary Pro is $2.99 and only compatible with the BlackBerry PlayBook.
As a music lover it's nice to find a simple music app with a useful purpose. This one allows you to edit mp3 file names and internal data such as album title, track number, genre, year, and even add a photo from your media library as the cover art. While it does not offer additional file support and is an Android port, it does quickly load your music library and applies changes instantly. The free version is rather limited but you gives you the chance to see how it works before grabbing the full version for $1.99. It supports BBOS, BlackBerry PlayBook, and all BlackBerry 10 devices which I find works out great for all.
Nothing beats an all-in-one application and this bad boy replaces over 10 of them at one time. There is a message block, wallpaper changer, screen lock changer, and more all combined in this powerhouse tool. This Built for BlackBerry application is perfect for everyday use and all that is required is leaving it open as an active frame, though headless support is on the way. Available for BlackBerry 10 it is $3.99 to purchase.
That's it for this week folks. For more apps and games be sure to head on over to the forums where you will find even more hidden gems to choose from whether it be for BlackBerry 10, BBOS or the BlackBerry PlayBook. Of course, you can always find the latest and greatest top editor's picks in the CrackBerry App Gallery. Are there any apps or games you would like to see?
