Pocket Bombs Classic by Rion Carter

If there is one thing I love it is retro games. Being that I happened to grow up on the originals I guess there is nothing like nostalgia. This game has been around for a while but only recently brought to my attention. Pocket Bombs is a critical mass chain reaction game you can play either against the computer or with up to three friends. It owes its roots to the "Bombs" game from the on the Newton Messagepad. Your goal is to strategically place multiple bombs in key areas to create chain reactions and take control of your opponents' squares. Users may adjust the difficulty levels including the grid size (height and width) and the style of the gameboard itself. These include classic (based on the original), invade (i.e. Space Invaders inspired theme), or Dark (similar to the classic tile-flipping games). Pocket Bombs supports BlackBerry 10 and is available to download for $.99. Not to mention it is extremely frustrating and hard to play.

Days Lived by PRYNK

A suggestion from the mailbag, this next application is quite unique but you already knew that from the name. By entering in your birthdate, it calculates the days, years, months, weeks, and minutes you have walked upon the earth. It will also calculate the time passed since you were married if you enter in that date as well. A fun part of this application is the interesting facts section where you can actually edit activities such as the number of days slept, eaten, cooked, slept, etc. This is a fun application and free to download for BlackBerry 10.

Premium Theme and Shelves by Raluca Vlad.

As someone who is used to themes and customizing my BlackBerry this application, finding and trying this application I discovered in the forums was a no brainer. It offers a quick way to change your backgrounds as well as added some shelves to make your homescreen icons stand out. There are over 150 HD wallpapers to choose from in the premium version and these designs give your compatible device a whole new look. While the free version limits you to four designs the full version is only $.99. I also must add that it has Built for BlackBerry status so you know the performance is solid and smooth. It is compatible with all BlackBerry 10 devices save the Z3.

File Manager by Free Apps

This application supports BlackBerry 10 as an Android Port but I chose it more for it's compatibility with most BBOS devices and the BlackBerry PlayBook. On those operating systems, this full-featured file manager is quite useful. In terms of performance, it's fast and quick and you can easily go from one folder to the next in a blink of an eye. The UI is rather simple but when you care more about functionality and being user-friendly I don't mind the simple colors against the white background. Users can copy, paste, change the view from list or gried, zip and unzip files, and create and delete folders and directories. You can find it for $.99 at the link.

Notepad by Pixatel

Browsing through the Amazon Appstore this week I came across this clean and straightforward note-taking application. The interface allows for easy access to create, search, and sort your notes in the field below. One of the added features of this application is not just that you can change the background and toolbar color of the interface and color code the notes, but that it has a text to speech option included as well. What this means is that you can have your notes read back to you and adjust the pitch and speed in preferences. There is a free version with ads available for download and the pro version is available as an in-app purchase for $.99. While this is from the Amazon store I have tested it on my Z30 and Q10 using only their respective official OS and have experienced no issues.

What You Might Have Missed

Spo2fy by Nemory Studios

Nemory Studios is at it again, this time developing the first and only native Spotify Client for BlackBerry 10. While this application is still in its infant stages there have been some additions since we last took a look at it. It now offer search filters, view album profile and tracks, view playlist tracks, error message, now playing page, and bug fixes and improvements. As it's in its early stages (Super Alpha Version as he calls it), not everything works but if you have a BlackBerry Beta Zone account you can give it a try. Be sure to leave feedback and check it out in the forums as well.

You can sign up for a BlackBerry Beta Zone account for free. Please note, that Beta Zone is not available in all regions.
