BlackBerry has announced the BlackBerry Z3 today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Z3 (aka "Jakarta") is an entry-level BlackBerry 10 device that will be geared toward emerging markets. It is also the first device from BlackBerry's partnership with Foxconn

The Z3 joins the BlackBerry Z10 and Z30 as an all-touch BB10 device. It is due out in April in Indonesia (hence the Jakarta codename) for under $200 retail price — the cheapest BlackBerry 10 device by far — with plans to expand availability beyond Indonesia in the future. The Z3 has only a 3G radio, no LTE, which isn't surprising given the price point, though BlackBerry CEO John Chen did say that BlackBerry has "a plan to take that phone out globally with LTE sometime in the future before I die."

The Z3 is the first BlackBerry device to be produced in partnership with OEM manufacturer Foxconn. Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn, said that "Since December we have worked on devices quickly." We're still awaiting further details on the device and will update this post when we've got them.

BlackBerry Introduces Stylish, 5" All-Touch BlackBerry 10 Smartphone Designed for Customers in Indonesia

BlackBerry Partnership with Foxconn Inspires the Affordable New BlackBerry Z3 Smartphone

BARCELONA, SPAIN--(Marketwired - Feb. 25, 2014) - Mobile World Congress 2014 - BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB), a global leader in mobile communications, today announced the BlackBerry® Z3 smartphone, a new all-touch BlackBerry® 10 smartphone designed with Indonesian customers in mind. Made for the next generation of BlackBerry customers in Indonesia, and customized with local apps and content, the stylish new BlackBerry Z3 smartphone features a modern design with a 5" display, long lasting battery and comes with BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.1.

"We are excited to introduce the new BlackBerry Z3, the first smartphone to emerge from our strategic partnership with Foxconn, which was announced in mid-December, 2013," said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO at BlackBerry. "The BlackBerry Z3 embodies all that BlackBerry 10 offers, with its exceptional productivity features and reliable communications, in a stylish, all-touch design made affordable for customers in Indonesia."

"BlackBerry is beloved in Indonesia and its loyal fans have made it a popular smartphone brand. This is why we are so proud to be able to help bring BlackBerry even closer to Indonesia with a fantastic product that will be accessible to even more Indonesians. This is only the beginning of what we know will be a long and fruitful partnership between Foxconn and BlackBerry," said Terry Gou, Founder and Chairman, Foxconn.

The new BlackBerry Z3 smartphone is customized with access to local apps and Indonesian content and comes with the latest BlackBerry 10 OS, version 10.2.1, that will make the things you do every day faster and easier. Key features include:

  • BlackBerry® Hub - The ever present BlackBerry Hub lets you access all your work and personal email, BBM™, text messages, social media updates and notifications in one place, with the ability to "peek" into the BlackBerry Hub from anywhere, so you're always only one swipe away from what matters to you. The Hub can be customized to identify priority messages and to filter the message list by various criteria that you can then activate with a simple pinch gesture.
  • BBM - BBM on the BlackBerry Z3 smartphone includes all the latest features of the popular mobile social network, customized for Indonesians. You get BBM voice and video chatting with Screen Share and support for BlackBerry Natural Sound, letting you hear nuances and variations in tone in a BBM Voice chat, and making the conversation sound like you're in the same room. BBM Channels features a variety of Indonesian channels as well as a package of BBM stickers that have been specially designed by an Indonesian artist.
  • BlackBerry Keyboard - The BlackBerry Keyboard learns what words you use and how you use them, then offers them up to you so you can type faster and more accurately. It gives you the best Bahasa Indonesia typing experience on a touchscreen, complete with multi-language support that lets you type in up to 3 different languages at the same time.
  • Time Shift & Story Maker - The BlackBerry Z3 smartphone's astonishing Time Shift camera feature lets you capture a group shot where everyone is smiling with their eyes wide open. You can also use Story Maker to bring a collection of photos and videos together, along with music and effects, to produce an HD movie that you can instantly share on YouTube.
  • BlackBerry 10 Browser - The BlackBerry 10 browser sets the industry benchmark for HTML5 performance on smartphones, and is incredibly fast, with fluid and responsive scrolling and zooming. The browser includes many advanced features, supports multiple tabs, lets you browse sites privately, includes a reader mode, and integrates with the platform for easily sharing content. You can even save web pages for later viewing.
  • Instant Previews & Reply Now - Be more timely and responsive with Instant Previews that bring BBM, SMS and email message to you no matter what you are doing on your BlackBerry Z3 smartphone. You can even reply to your BBM or SMS messages in any app, or swipe to the BlackBerry Hub to respond. If you get a phone call that you can't answer right way, you can instantly silence the call and send a Reply Now response through BBM, SMS or email to let the caller know you're busy.
  • Fast, Easy Sharing - The BlackBerry Z3 smartphone learns how you share and who you share with, helping you reduce the number of steps and amount of time it takes to get your files, photos, or documents to where they need to go. Touching "share" in any app provides suggestions on who and how to share your files based on who you've shared with in the past, and the feature only gets smarter the more you use it.
  • FM Radio - The new BlackBerry Z3 includes a built-in FM radio. You can listen to local FM stations, which does not require any network connection.

The new BlackBerry Z3 smartphone is expected to be available from leading carriers and retailers in Indonesia in April. Further details on pricing and availability will be announced at launch.

Sec- nevermind. The dude above me is a... person. But really, interesting to see Chen work like this

Hope a few spill over to Australia. Bali and Jakarta are not far.

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

I a lil upset i just wanted a fully touch and high end device !!!

Posted via My Amazing Galaxy Note 3 white N9005 On CrackBerry App!

If you look at the devices that businesses typically buy their employees, it would not surprise me if that qwerty leak from the other day might be the only higher-end model in the next 6 months or so until they can try and get bb10 going.

Nokia Lumia 520, a Windows Phone with a price point around 150$ that's been selling very well in emergent markets.

Posted via CB10 on my Z30

I can honestly say I am more excited for this phone then the qwerty they just announced.

Posted via CB10

Chen promises and delivers. Not geared towards me in the US, but I hope this allows BlackBerry to gain some ground in emerging markets!

Posted via CB10

You're right, he really did delivered. In the past Blackberry have been super slow to push out new devices and endless delayed promises. Mr. Chen hasn't been CEO for more then 6 months and he delivered as promised. Keep up the good work Chen.

Right, but it's not out yet, and they still make announcement for a phone that will come out at least 6 months later.

Good for the Z3 though.

They can't mess up the next big one. And there are many more things to tweak, QNX optimized for multi-core, and a lot of legacy features re-integrated to be able to call it Classic.

That one here is more like a modified Z10 with a more generic case, which they were able to put together real quick.

True in US carrier like Verizon, AT&T and TMobile does want to do with BlackBerry any more, I guess I'm switching to the up coming Galaxy 5 . I have a Q10 and since Feb 10th still waiting for the upgrade 10.2.1 version.

This device costs less to make, the only way that the z10 can be sold so cheap these days is due to the write-downs on the hardware.

You said it. Plus, since the Z3 is made by Foxconn, BlackBerry don't need to care about inventory and storage, which was one of the main advantage of this partnership.

Posted via CB10 on my Z30

Seriously no.
This Z30 is made from Foxconn factories and targets on developing countries, means producing one Z30 is already (even much) cheaper than producing one Z10.
It's like, they sell the Z30 in a cheap price 'cause they want to, in the Z10 case, it's because they have to.

Super-confusing post. Mostly because either you or your auto-correct kept writing Z30 instead of Z3.

Dying to buy this phone. Was buying z30 this week. Now planning to wait for z3
My only concern was screwn size. Using the amazing z10 currently

Posted via CB10

Read up on each. Z3 is low end device for emerging markets. Z30 is high end flagship device. Get Z30 and you will NOT be disappointed.

Posted via CB10

Ok, looks awesome better than Z30. Hope they can bring the improved bahasa indo keyboard to all BB10 phones. I will get this from Indonesia If I can do OS updates in Singapore.

Arvind Bahasa Indonesia is currently available in the Z10 I'm using it, it's built in to the phone.

Posted via CB10

I can't wait for the comments that are posted from people on the east coast USA in the morning who don't bother reading everything.

"Why no 4GLTE"

"Specs are 1989"

"Why less RAM, BB10 on the PB now!"

"Why didn't they make a Z10 with a 5" screen"

.........

Will eventually be posted via CB10 on my Z70

That device looks cool
Modern just like the lumia. Can't my z10 be like it?

Posted Via CB10 Running On Z10STL100-2 Using OS Version 10.2.1.2141

If this device can be used on prepaid programs, I hope it makes it to North America as well. This would be a great device for the teens.

BBM back in teeny hands due to great, affordable BB10 phone on prepaid. Sounds like a winner.

And now even the iFriends can participate.

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

They really have to hit SE Asia and India hard with this phone, along with some marketing spend. Get it out there BEFORE BBM video gets released cross platform so it can be marketed as a full BBM phone with no extra fees...get all the legacy users to finally chose bb10.

Posted via CB10

Probably still going to be moving z10s in developed world at 300-350 USD until inventory / commitments thin up more than they have, but I guess by the April/May time frame, why not? I'd probably buy my dad one of these...

Posted via CB10

I think they should bring it to all markets. Under $200? That could be a pay as you go phone for some people.

Posted via CB10

Totally confused! Why would BlackBerry make a phone that a) doesn't compete with high end phones and b) why waste money on research and development for these phone? Damn this is not looking good BlackBerry. Hey guys you see that new BlackBerry? Oh yeah, z3 I think, that phone should of been released before the z30.

Posted via CB10

Best looking BB10 phone and it's crap spec-wise :)
I hope they keep same design language with much premium materials for Z40 or whatever..
It simply looks gorgeous..

Bad advertisement. People don't talk like that in Indonesia you know. It's like somebody's too lazy to consult a proper Bahasa speaker and just use Google translate.

This isn't looking good for BBRY, going backwards with a track pad, and now this door stop... well time to maybe think about unloading the Z30 while it still holds a little value and jump ship for a company that is actually striving forward.

Sent flawlessly from my Z30!

Cheap phone with great battery life, big screen 5", this phone can compete lenovo market in Indonesia, but I hope blackberry can do a great marketing that show how awesome bb OS10 is, because many people in Indonesia already disappointed with os7 and many people think android is better with many Apps. But cheap phone mean more user, and more user will attract more developer to create more apps, and it will strengthen the OS 10 market.

Really hope Indonesian can accept Z3 and become booming product in here.

Posted via CB10

One of the reason why bb is so popular in Indonesia in the past is because of the BB 8250, cheap 200us range phone with full bb servis feature. Even now when you walk around here, you will always see someone use these phone even though there are many cheap China android phone.

Maybe with this price point and good marketing, bb can raise in Indonesia.

Posted via CB10

If this phone is released in Canada I will definitely buy one! $200 for a 5" BB? Wow! Hopefully it's 4G capable here though.

Posted via CB10

Blackberry is Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn that's a nice handset for $200.00 bucks! Oh hell yeah!!!!!!!!

Bidagreat using the magnificent Z10

Perfect. A real low end Z.. and a hopefully an update z30 and the new q20 and we off to the races. If they dared mentioned a slider, people may have had users passing out like flies today..

Looks good for an entry-level device. Can't wait to see what the follow-up will be for the z10 and z30. Now that will get you moving!

Lovin' my z10 and wish I had a z30!

Posted via CB10 and my z10

At this price-point, I can buy it out right. Would rather ATT just get the z30, but if that ain't happening this will do well. Even with no 4g, etc... this will surely be an upgrade from my 9800. We shall see!!!

Definitely buying one for a work phone if it comes to Canada. Pass the Z10 on to a family member, pick up a Z30 (or whatever is bigger/faster at that time) for an evening/weekend phone. Life will be good!

Seriously, the bigger screen and battery, the USB at the bottom of the phone, it all sounds great to me. I just hope that it somehow retains that BlackBerry toughness, need it on the job site. I can't tell you how many smashed iPhone screens I've seen guys limping along with. The Z10 didn't disappoint me there. I've dropped it many times, no case, still going strong.

Posted via CB10

Very sexy looking phone. Weird it doesn't come standard with LTE, but still quite a nice looking device. Let's hope it outperforms the Z10 by hardware alone.

Wow how is that for delivering. The guy says he's gonna do something and delivers beyond our expectations in a matter of months. I liked Thor but this guy kicks his ass!

A ceo we can believe in.

I think I'm gonna end up with all the bb10 phones, they're just too damned good.

Posted via CB10

Wow. So now, in addition to the great hardware and great OS / UX, we also have a CEO and company that have a grip on EXECUTION? Darn, what's next? Are they gonna excel at marketing now? I gotta get me some BBRY stock if that happens (but by then I'll be too late, of course)...

cant wait for this z3...looks nice and with the awesome prize....dont care about how many corner that they need to cut
