The BlackBerry Advertising Service, which offered developers a way to integrate ads in BlackBerry 10 applications, will be shutting down on June 16, or two months from today. The company launched the service in September 2010.
In a blog post today, BlackBerry said it was ending its ad service as part of its overall efforts to "realign our focus and activities to support enterprise customer needs." After June 16, BlackBerry will shut down its advertising servers and end the use of its API.
BlackBerry offered a list of things that app developers that are still accessing the advertising service should do, and be aware of, between now and June 16:
- Developers using the service should remove all API calls to the BlackBerry Advertising Service before the June 16, 2015 end-of-life date
- We also recommend that developers using the service find an alternate advertising SDK that supports BlackBerry 10. Smaato is one possible solution, which you can check out at https://www.smaato.com/publishers/
- Developers using the BlackBerry Advertising Service will receive all outstanding payments within 90 days of June 16, 2015

Virgin Atlantic to show off BBM on in-flight ads
Seeing advertising for BBM seems to be pretty thin on the ground as far as I can tell - unless I'm missing something. The word on the street is that the following video was created by UK design company Pope Wainwright for use on Virgin Atlantic flights. We haven't really seen any videos of this sort used by airlines in the past, but this one is a real gem. From the Pope Wainwright...

When it comes to the BlackBerry ads being run in North America, there has been plenty of talk about how they could be better improved. Now, I'm not overly familiar with how ads are run in Taiwan but one video posted in the CrackBerry Forums from BlackBerry Taiwan certainly got my attention for several reasons. It hooked me by playing off a 'The Devil wears Prada' story line, then got...
Race day for Team BlackBerry at the British Formula 1
The Mercedes AMD Petronas (A.K.A. Team BlackBerry) team are off to a flying start prior to the race today. In the qualifying round Lewis Hamilton took 1st. place followed by Nico Rosberg to ensure the team will be at the front of the grid - so fingers crossed we are in with a fighting chance of getting on the podium once again. You've probably noticed the above Story Maker video. I was...
Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors pick up BlackBerry as their official device
BlackBerry and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment announced today that the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL, the Raptors in the NBA, and the Marlies (another hockey team) are all adopting BlackBerry as their official smartphone. Obviously this means that we'll see a bunch of marketing around the teams, but it will also mean plenty of apps for fans and some BBM Channels. It looks like...
