CrackBerry explains how to restore a Nuked BlackBerry

Nuked BlackBerry
By Kevin Michaluk on 18 Dec 2007 01:02 pm EST

Good Afternoon Class! I’ve been a bit slack in my BlackBerry 101 lectures as of late – I blame the Smartphone Round Robin, all the Contests we’ve been running on the site and the busy Holiday Season. My apologies! This will be the last 101 lecture of the year… but we’ll be back in 2008 bigger and better than ever.

Today’s lecture isn’t really a “newbie” topic, but it’s one that I wanted to cover because in the past three weeks I’ve gone through it half a dozen times and that is Reloading the Operating System on a BlackBerry that’s totally “Nuked”. I’m not sure if nuked is the technically appropriate word for it (I also use one that starts with an F and ends in an ED and has a CK in the middle), but it is how I refer to a BlackBerry that is stuck in a permanent reboot cycle and is completely, completely unusable. With a Nuked Berry, essentially the device turns on (red LED comes on for a few seconds), then you see the white screen with the hourglass of death, and then the display shuts off, the device shuts off, a few seconds go by and then it starts up and does the same thing again and again and again (it’ll do it for hours if you let it).

Over the past year I have arrived at this Nuked Berry scenario a few different ways: from installing a BlackBerry theme that wasn’t appropriate for my device/OS version; from installing beta software that was majorily glitchy; and one time during an OS upgrade the installation failed (I think I had too many apps installed and the device ran out of memory when trying to reload the backed-up apps). And while a “battery pull” works for solving most of little glitches that may occur when using your BlackBerry from day to day, that’s not the case with a Nuked BlackBerry.

The GOOD NEWS is that this problem likely won't affect you unless you're out and about looking for trouble and you can always fix a Nuked Berry (at least from my experience!). You just need to know a couple of little tricks and have 45 minutes of free time…

The Nuked Berry Problem

The fundamental problem with the Nuked Berry scenario is that because the device is stuck in a permanent reboot sequence or loop, when you attach it your computer via USB cable it simply connects and disconnects over and over and over again (you’ll just keep hearing that USB detected/unplugged noise) as the BlackBerry turns on/off. This makes using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software to reload your OS impossible as the device is only detected for a couple of seconds before the device shuts off (and is now undetected).

Nuked Berry
My Nuked Berry...just a second before the display shuts off
and the device reboots itself, again and again and again

With pulling your BlackBerry’s battery doing nothing to solve the problem and it being impossible to establish a link to your desktop, at this point if you called your carrier for support there’s a chance they’ll tell you your BlackBerry is broken and that it’s time for a new one. To me that’s not a bad thing (what’s better than getting a new BlackBerry?!), but it’s not the CrackBerry way! Let's fix it!

Before reloading the operating system on a Nuked BlackBerry, you need to make sure you have taken care of some basics:

 • you are using a Windows Computer
 • have BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed
 • have the BlackBerry Operating System you want to install/reload onto your Nuked BlackBerry installed

You can download the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager from the website, and you can find the latest Operating System available for your device from our BlackBerry OS superpage.

Keep in mind that during this process you don’t necessarily have to reload the same version of the OS that’s currently running on your Nuked BlackBerry. With the example I’m going through today, I’m actually going to revert to a slightly older operating system. There was an OSv4.3.1 Beta for the Curve I got my hands on way back when. Well, it turns out it had a slight glitch that made it want to occasionally reboot the phone when I answered incoming calls (which I was living with ok), but after Nuking my Berry while testing some software a friend of mine was working on, I decided to take the opportunity to revert back to the very stable OSv4.2.2. To accomplish this, on my computer I first open Control Panel > Add/Remove Software and uninstalled the current Operating System for the 8300 Curve. From there I went to AT&T’s website and downloaded and installed OSv4.2.2.

And now for the disclaimer, aka Bad News. With the process I’m going through here, any 3rd party applications you have installed on your BlackBerry will be lost. This install gives you a clean slate, which is a heck of a lot better than a Nuked Berry. So once you’re up to speed, you will have to install all your favorite apps once again.

The following process doesn't just work for Nuked BlackBerrys. You can also use it to clean the slate/reload/update the OS on a BlackBerry that's in fine working order.

How to Reload the OS on a Nuked BlackBerry

Step #1: Make sure your BlackBerry IS NOT connected to your computer. Locate and Open the App Loader application. You won't have a shortcut to this program on your start menu. You need to locate it manually. Open your file browser, go to your C Drive (operating system drive) and navigate your way through the folders to Program Files > Common Files >Research In Motion > AppLoader.  Once you are in the AppLoader directory, double click on the Loader application shortcut. Once Loader opens, you can click Next  and then proceed to Step #2. As you may have noticed, we skip Desktop Manager altogether.

AppLoader Directory
Step 1: Browse your way into the AppLoader Directory, and Open the Loader Application

Loader Homescreen
The Loader Homescreen. You can Click Next to Continue

Loader Screen - Com 1
After you click next, Loader Waits for you to Connect the Device.
Proceed to Step #2

Step #2: We need to connect the BlackBerry to the Computer via USB cable. But here's where the tricky part comes in with the Nuked BlackBerry. Do you see in the image above where it says COM1? What we want to do is plug in the BlackBerry, and when COM1 switches to say USB-PIN:UNKNOWN we immediately click Next. This catches the BlackBerry and takes it out of the constant reboot cycle and allows you to then reload the Operating System.

Tip: The USB-PIN:UNKNOWN option will display for a few seconds when the BlackBerry is first connected/flashing its LED in red. With a Nuked BlackBerry,  That occurs when the device is in the initial start-up part of it's reboot sequence. The easiest way to get that to happen (vs. waiting for that step in the reboot sequence where you have a tenth of a second to hit Next before you lose your chance) is to simply pull the battery from the BlackBerry. With the battery pulled, connect the BlackBerry to the USB connector and as SOON as you see USB-PIN:UNKNOWN hit Next. You have to be quick still, but using this method you are in control of the timing. From there you can put the battery back in and battery cover back on (Make Sure you install the battery or else when the OS update is completing and the device disconnects from the computer to reboot, it will lose the power provided by the USB connection and you will get an error and have to do it all over again!).

** If you don't get it right the first time, try again (unplug from USB, pull battery, connect and hit Next while USB-PIN:Unknown is showing). You have to be fast and the timing is key, so it may take you three or four tries.

Connect Your BlackBerry via USB. Click NEXT as Soon as USB:UNKNOWN Appears

Battery Out
Tip: With Battery Out, Connect BlackBerry to USB.
This will give you more control in nailing the timing of
connecting Next while USB:UNKOWN displays

Step #3: With your BlackBerry now out of the permanent reboot sequence, you are essentially in the clear and well on your way to having your BlackBerry up and running again. Choose the options you want to install on your BlackBerry (BrickBreaker, BlackBerry Messenger, BlackBerry Maps, etc.), click next, then approve the installation by clicking "Finish." Sit back and relax while the BlackBerry does its thing. It'll take some time and go through a number of screens but eventually you will reach my favorite "The loading operation was successful" screen. Your BlackBerry will reboot itself at this point and it will take a LONG time to reboot (10 - 15 minutes or so). You can unplug it from the USB (it's not connected while rebooting) and just continue to sit back and wait. Get scared, but not too will eventually boot up.

OS Installation Options
Select the OS options you want to install

Approve OS install
Approve the Operating System Installalation Options

Sit Back and Relax
Sit back and relax and let the installer do its thing

Installation Complete!
Installation Complete! Just sit back and let your BlackBerry Reboot

Step #4: That's it! You are done. Brand New BlackBerry. With your BlackBerry no longer Nuked, you can run through the Set Up Wizard (set the date/time/fonts, etc.) and from there you WILL NOW BE ABLE TO connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software. Hopefully you occasionally back up your data and can now use Desktop Manager's restore function to load up your backed up data. If not, hopefully you have your contacts all synced to Outlook so you can reload your Address book from there. Once that's done, it's time to install all your favorite apps again! I'd recommend starting with the Launcher (visit on your BlackBerry's browser to download it!). Happy BlackBerrying!

Desktop Manager Reload
At least in this case I KNEW I was putting some risky software onto my BlackBerry
so before installing did a backup of my data. Once I un-nuked my BlackBerry
I was able to relatively quickly get back to where I was before.

That's all folks! This is one of those lessons that I hope you don't need to use, but if you ever do find yourself with a Nuked BlackBerry I hope this lesson gets you back up and running quickly. There are some alterantives to this method as well, including some third-party apps like BBSAK (see another tutorial here). And if you're still stuck, the CrackBerry Forums are only a click away!

So I followed all of the above steps however when I get to the device application selection, there's no apps listed. What am I doing wrong? Please help...

I am in DESPERATE NEED for any kind of equivalent for Mac users. My phone died WHILE using the Mac DM and I can't get it back. PLEASE HELP I am desperate! Thanks...

Hi, if anyone can help, I'm desperate. Watched the utube 101 on the nuked blackberry. Followed the steps and get to load JVM and system software wich is ticked. The red led on the blackberry comes on for a short while after that and then I receive the following error message " Device communications error encountered. [A:0x00000025]" It then informs me to try again. I have, several times, with the same result. Could anybody help?

your a life saver omg. I looked all over for this! worked, thankyou so much!!

I have a Mac, what do I do?

I nuked my BB Bold 9000 this morning. I wasnt able to restore it on my imac so I went to my windows laptop and it worked fine. Thanks you are a life saver.

How do I get verizons os for curve 8330? I can go thru the steps but app loader says i dont have os downloaded to install???

i nuked my 8900 accidentally and i've been trying out these steps to no avail..

i cannot get to the point where it says "PIN:UNKNOWN", instead, it goes straight to "PIN:mypin".. Tried doing it without the battery, but all it does it to go to this sign where there is a crossed out battery..

does the usb cable i use make a difference? i'm currently not using the proprietary one from RIM, but i don't see why there should be a difference..

really really need help here, please reply asap!! and much thanks in advance!!

Hello everyone, my bb is I run out of battery during the update and then the next day the bb storm appeared in cal mode, i follow the guides and nothing was the latest to try the technique of pressing buttons and nothing in the attempt to pressure the buttons that I guess the battery died with the bb storm, now buy a battery charger and another battery, but all it does is:
1. Red LED lights up only for 10 sec to 20 sec and then goes out and does nothing more
2. I followed the guidelines of this forum and other many more both in English and Spanish and nothing helped me to this bb was a gift and I have completed the procedures have changed my cable, I have 2 batteries in excellent condition for the processes and all I has resulted.
3. With apploader connect and I get the USB-PIN: UNKNOWN, next I will stay in the connecting part of the arm there is no more or stay hours with the ticking but that's led this process.

Do not know what else to do if you can help? or know some way or tips that can help me I'm going to thank a lot.

Dear Respected Sir, these instructions are great and very helpfull for reinstalling the OS in black berry. Thanks a lot.

Ok, I followed the instructions and was able to load up a clean slate. I pre-loaded v4.2.2 and all was going well... until I got another Fatal Error with the same old problem. Is the latest Desktop Manager version (5.01) causing this?

Ok i have been at this for hours and i have had absolutely no luck. I will go through the steps that i have taken and would be overly greatful if anyone could help.

I have followed the above tutorial ie:

downloaded OS for my carrier and installed it on my PC

run application loader etc,

only to reach the updating your device section, then it loads system software.

but once it gets onto "wait for device initialization" the blackberry starts the reboot cycle again powering on and off... and then after a while application loader just gives up

please help!

follow step 2 right to the letter. and make sure when you click next it says pin:unknown. takes a few tries but once you get it it works

I have a pearrl 8220 flip. It dies every 3-4 days. then it takes me 2-3 days to try and reload the software. I do everything that is on the 101 but when I get to updating your device and it runs through all the prep and is in the load java applications
loading module "net_rim_ and so on
loading application modules
that is when the phone cuts off an I get a error message.
I have dont the wipe on jlcomnder. everything I can find online with no luck.
someone told me that the original sevice provider (rogers) can send a zapp signal to the phone that would do this. I have it unlocked and using it on fido.. please help

Please Help.
During the device initialization process the phone restats and after a few atempts a message shows "Application Loader was unable to connect with your device. Please re-conect your device, enter the password, if required, and click Retry."
Any advice?

I fried my storm the other day and after going through and trying the steps on other posts i found this one. half an hour later it was working. thanks very helpful!

how long is it supposed to take for the phone to cut on after it has completed the final step of the application loader process? it's in the same rebooting cycle it was in before i followed the instructions; the hour glass comes on the screen for a few seconds and then the screen goes black and the red light flashes! i don't know what else to do can someone help me out?

harris 101

I have tried you suggestions with my BB8220 and keep getting a message stating that there is a connection problem with the multiport device??

when I get to step 2, nothing happens, it won't detect the bb tour at all.. it is just blackscreen, 3 red blinking led lights, over and over again.. any other suggestions? I guess it's toast?

Thank you soooooo much for this! I attempted too many passwords thinking there was no way my berry would wipe itself clean...dumb me. I had to do it twice but once I saw that at&t logo pop up I did a happy dance! I thought I would have to go out and buy a new blackberry because my warranty has been expired for about two years now. Your directions worked like a charm. Thanks again!! :]

What do you recommend mac users to do?

Hey can somebody please help me? I follow this correctly and after i chose all of my options on what I want to reinstall on my blackberry, it says the blackberry cannot be found even though its connected. Can somebody please help me? My email is

Just got my new BB 9700 (bold) about a week ago, while i was using it (normally), all of the sudden the screen went all white and displaying a message that said "JVM Error 517". I did everything that crossed my mind to fix it but nothing helped, until i realized that it was "nuked" after reading this instructions everything got back to normal, i do have to say that i spent more than 5 hours working on it but i did make it work.

I really would like to thank you very much for your thorough step by step instructions. I also had the 552 error. I was getting so aggravated on researching bb's support and other websites that were evasive and ultimately useless. Your instructions worked perfectly. I had a recent back and everything is up and running. Thank you!!

I have tried this method but have not solved my 507 error. An error message pops up and the uploading process stops. The error that i get is saying that uploader can not connect to device and to enter my password. How can i enter a password if the blackberry is nuked??? or does this mean the bb is done for?

try using another PC... or updating USB ports...
make sure ur USB wires/connectors are also in good shape...

I followed everything and everything was working 100% until the last procedure (loading applications) it disconnected halfway through the "loading applications" step... anyway have any suggestions? Thanks!

This method fixed my 507 error. It was the third attempt finally works. My first and second was too late the PIN number was already showing when I press NEXT button on the application loader. The third time I get the application loader ready on the screen and pull the battery on BB 8310 ATT then push back the battery and immediately push in the USB cable. The screen briefly showing PIN:Unavailable or something like that then immediately press NEXT button the application loader. For some reason version 4.5 doesn't work so I went even futher down to version 4.2 and finally managed to get the BB alive again. My problem started after using JL_Cmder it wiped out everything but not able to upgrade the BB. All is good now, many thanks to Kevin.

yup I nuked it, bb curve 8900,nothing but white screen..sob..pulled up this 101, went thru the steps and yayyyy new blackberry...connect to desk manager and got most of my things restored(so glad I had backed up recently), had to restore some apps but mobihand had them all out there for me to restore, no problem... :-) THANKS CB!!

How can I fix a continuous reboot issue with my Tour if I run Firefox on my laptop?

Thanks so much for the step-by-step instructions. I hope I never need them again. Alas, this did not work to revive my Pearl Flip 8220. So I had the perfect excuse to upgrade. LOVE my new Bold 9700!

I did all the steps and hit next after plugging the bb storm to the computer and getting the USB-PIN:UNKNOWN but my problem is when you get to the app part. I dont have any apps to download it says something along the lines as the device does no have any programs on the desktop manager and that i need to contact my provider but when i went to the Program Files > Common Files >Research In Motion > AppLoader there were all kinds of apps. I clicked on the add button on the top of that screen and back to program files> common Files> research in motion> apploader the filefolder is empty. Can somebody help me get passed this?

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is post was 1 of the most informative and useful i found after searching for ages although my problem was different, this still worked perfectly!

Running a white Curve 8520 and suddenly got that white screen with 'app error 523 reset'. Googling it you can find tons of results but none of them helped since they all wanted me to reinstall the fones firmware using the device manager>> app loader, which wasnt possible because the device manager wouldnt connect properly due to the error. So i had the most recent firmware installed on my pc from the blackberry site and followed your instructions and it worked exactly as you said and i didnt even have to bother calling my sp, thanx a mill for the clear and precise instructions Kevin, you really saved me loads of time and energy =}

Ive tried like over a hundred times now with no avail. The device connects and it says USB:UNKNOWN then changes to my pin and i click next, but everytime it disconnects and the next screen is always blank just saying that theres nothing there...please help, thanks.

I have done all these steps perfectly.
when the progress bar starts, it gets past the 1st step, but when i get to the second step "waiting for device initialization" i start hearing the usb connect/disconnect beeps on my computer. this is follwed by an error message "apploader could not connect to the device". so basically when i get to step 2, the device starts to reboot continuously! this is super annoying as i know im close to fixing my bb!!!!

Ive done all of this 4 times and after when its loading applications it fails it like disconnects

Please help

Hi All,

I had the same problem too on my bold 9000 with the white screen of death. So I tried and followed the instructions. Couldn't get it to work...was wondering what the heck was going on.

Turned out to actually just be the battery....when I stuck my battery from my new bold 9700 in, it worked! :-)

Hello, my blackberry turns the red light on when I connect him to the computer. A few seconds later appears in the screen the charger sign.
However it doesn't turns on. I already tried to follow these steps, but when I go to choose the "com" door, nothing appears to me.
What can I do?

I'm not quite sure if the BlackBerry site came up with a variant of this situation with the nuked device.
I got a 552 error after I restarted bc of a bad program so I checked this forum here. I got up to the switching the battery part but that was it.
I tried the BB website and they had a somewhat similar procedure. They said to take out the battery then hook it up again to computer, start desktop manager then go to app loader and go from there. Long story short, I got my bb again using the "official" steps. So if any of you guys wanna try that other way out, give it a shot! There's no deletion of any files whatsoever at all, surprisingly.

I get the blinking red light, but no white screen. What do I do????

dammmmm, thanks man, now i got a 5.0 os BB Storm, looks and feel awesome, im in love with my berry again, thanks dude..

before the "waiting for device initialization" stage the blackberry connects and disconnects and makes the corresponding sounds. Then a prompt comes up saying that it has failed to connect. I am using desktop manager 5.0.1 and trying to put 4.5.0 OS on my curve 8330. I have also deleted the "vendor" file. I have tried to do it about ten times, making sure to press the "next" button immediately. I dont know what i need to do!

i have this problem too with my 8900. lemme know if you get it to work

ok I have tried this step by step by step...Starting from the beginning, I put battery in phone, it lights on keyboard power up, "hour glass" pops up, 5 to 10 seconds later phone goes dead (black screen). Plug phone into computer, it is recognized by the DM and when I do the "forced OS" as described on this page, I am greeted with an error, OR i am greeted with the SUCCESS, HOWEVER, black berry resets, red led light comes on with keyboard lighting, "hour glass", goes dead (black screen) With your powers combined, you can get it done crackberry..readdyy... BREAK!!!

Thanks a was a great help, i got scared to see my blackberry bold in such a shape but your article saved the day......thanks a ton.............

So I had no previous OS downloaded on my computer or blackberry. I just recently got my USB port and when it was trying to update, it failed at some point when it was trying to install the new software. I tried going through these steps but when I reach step 3, I don't have those options. I've tried numerous times to update the software and then it goes to the step "waiting for initialization", it doesn't work also. Can someone help me with this please?

I am not sure if this is going to help me or not but it sounds like a plan! Here is my problem.

my 8120 would shut down in the middle of playing brickbreaker, typing out an email or txt message. I would flash the red LED before shutting down. I removed the battery, it took a few minutes and powered up just fine. Then is started shutting down every minute. I decided to plug it in to my destop manager and see if I need a software update. It recommended I downgrade to 4.5 (don't remember all the details) but I clicked ok and it started to upgrade/downgrade my software, then it happened the stupid red light flashed in the middle and it shut down. I received an error message saying it could not complete because the device was disconnected.

Now I can not even get the thing to turn on, much less give me a red LED light when I plug my charger or usb into the port. Any suggestions on how to get me going to use this fix or is my phone just done?

whilst loading the os my bb pearl 8110 disconnects and fails to reconnect on the initialisation stage please help???

My BB Storm 9530 got nuked after a failed update, went through your guide it work fine, i just deleted the carriers file from the OS file....did what u fine.

When I go to PROGRAM FILES > COMMON FILES > RESEARCH IN MOTION > APPLOADER and click on Loader, the Connection option gives me nothing. It's just blank, and when I try to expand the option, it just gives me a blank list. Also the "Detect communication port" option is disabled. Help?

The same thing happened to me. Try a different USB port on your computer.

I have a Dell desktop with USB ports front and back. I tried multiple times to connect via front port and most of the time nothing happened when I connected the phone. A few times I got "USB-PIN:30920D5B", but the loading operation failed.

Then I looked on the back and found additional USB slots, and one of these gave me the "USB-PIN:UNKNOWN" that you are looking for. This one worked.

Hope this helps.

I follow the steps in the lecture, but when it's time to load the software, I get this message:

The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry software for the device you have connected to the computer. Please contact....

I do have the software installed on the computer, and have tried it repeatedly with both the version on the original disk supplied when I bought the BB Bold, and with the updated version. Any ideas for how I can get it to see the software and install it?

that came up for mine too but what you have to do is go to your service provider's web site and download the software for your phone. i have tmobile so when i logged in i went for software update clicked on the bb that i have and clicked the download link. hope this helps!

When I bring up the App loader and hit next it says that connection is COM3, I then plug in my BB and connection comes up as USB-PIN: 30CEE310. I tried hitting next, but no connection. Took the battery out, connection USB-PIN: UNKNOWN, hit next and still no connection. PLEASE HELP I am stuck in the middle of NORTH DAKOTA working with no BB!

Omg..I did exactly as you said to get its heart pumping and BAM my little tour is up to good speed again :)

How awesome are you? ..Totally awesome..

Thanks so much for your help..

I get stuck at the beginning. At the part in the App Loader Wizard where the connection should say COM1. The drop-down doesn't show even that. It's completely blank. I have no idea where to go from there.

Thank you so much for the details instructions and screen shots even sprint couldn't help me all the way. I'm back on and happy to have my phone back.

Help, does tutorial work for the Blackberry storm 9530?

I did it with my "Droped in a bucket of water - Nuked after 3 months" Bb Bold 9000-and it's working just like new. I uploaded the latest OS (Azercell) and it's a newer version from the AT&T. Thanks Kevin!

I got to "Updating Your Device" but that failed, ending with "Unable to Complete the Loading Operation" - "Unspecified error encountered [A:0x00000001]

I had to repeat the procedure at least half a dozen times, but eventually it worked!

I have a major problem, i don't know the software version i need to replace, and as the phone is completely dead i cant get into it to find out. It is a Curve 8310. I have so far downloaded 2 versions and been unsuccessful. I get to the part where it is supposed to begin installing the OS and the message box says something along the lines of No Blackberry software compatible with this device. Help!! I bought the phone for my daughter from ebay from China. NEVER AGAIN!

This miraculously worked straight from Blackberry Desktop. I couldn't get this tutorial to work for me. Plugged in the phone, opened BB Desktop and I was up and running in about 15 minutes! I did, however, run into a fatal error at the end of everything (just before it rebooted) but I just let it do it's thing and BOOM back in business. Thanks though, this put me on the right track! And I hope this post may help others.

Somehow all the files in Apploader in the Research in motion folder got deleted, could someone please send it to my email in a compressed file? thank you so much!

"The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry software for the device you have connected to the computer."

If you get this message you need to download the software not directly from Blackberry's site but thru your mobile provider's site.

The OS files are not included with the default Desktop Manager from RIM.

Hey guys

I really really would need some advice. I tried to upgrade my bb 8320 to the carrier from the provider (t-mobile) to OS 4.5. So, I do not know what happened but it got nuked.

I tried to follow instructions from

installation is complete, but with problem. The BB will only load up when there is no SIM card inserted. With a sim card, it would go into a permanent loop cycle.

I have tried putting my sim card on another phone (not BB), and it does not seem to have any problem.

Please help

Your blackberry can be restored to the factory settings from the command prompt. (I've used this on an 8530 stuck in an endless loop of resetting.) With the blackberry connected to your computer by USB enter

cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader
and then
loader.exe /resettofactory

my 8520 got bricked and i tried the steps in the 101 lecture but it didnt work. i had given up on it when i came across ur post. with fingers trembling and praying to God, i tried the command line prompt and voila i was back up. just saying a bg thank you for the post.

I tried this about 10 times and it didn't work once. It would load to "Wait for device initialization" and then it would start the reboot loop again.

I REALLY need my phone fixed PRONTO. I need it for work and can't afford a new one. PLEASE HELP.

I am trying to fix a nuked BB 8310. I have followed all the steps. Even found a site saying a laptop wouldn't work. Followed same steps on desktop comp. I can get it to connect, erase old files and download new os. During the initialization, it's still nuked. If anyone can help me it would be appreciated. The phone was only used for about three weeks before it nuked. Thanx!

after i do everything correctly on application loader, the phone still goes crazy. i have a blackberry 8820 and it reads error 507, after i do all the steps the procedure stops at the application loader and says "Unable to reconnect to the device during a multi-stage load operation."

--please help me!

i cannot get theos to load to my pc what the hell am i doing wrong please email me at

I was able to do this without much stress!
Thanks so much.

I get to the device application selection bit but the box says "The blackberry application software does not have blackberry device software for the device you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator."
I have unistalled then re-installed blackberry desktop manager with the disk and tried it again but the same message comes up.
Can anyone help ? Thanks

Complicated stuff ... annoyingly so ...

I have a Blackberry Curve 8320. I've got Desktop Manager 5.01 and OS 4.5 on my computer - Windows Vista. I have tried several times to follow these instructions to save my nuked phone, but I always get the same error message when it tries to install:

Application Loader was unable to connect with your device. Please re-connect your device, enter the password, if required and click Retry.

I have scoured these boards to try to figure out how to get my computer to revognize my nuked phone.

I have a problem with my storm bb9530 and I came across your 101 guide.
the problem is that my bb keeps on rebooting and blinking the red light. I do not get any white screen or any 507 error.
I tried the method posted in your guide but after it starts loading when it gets to the "waiting for device initialization" the bb starts rebooting again and I get a "Application Loader Failed to connect to your device", I hit Retry and the same thing happens again. I have tried removing the battery but I only get a "Reconnecting to JVM" message and constant "application loader failed to connect" messages.
Any ideas?? I will appreciate any help you can provide.
my email is

Hey u saved my phone... literally. What a detailed piece of info u have put up..Hats off to you....completley indepted :)

Thank you thank you thank you!! It worked perfectly, i have only had the 8900 curve for 2 days i thought it was completely broken! My laptop died during an update and after that the phone wouldn't turn on, the red light just kept flashing! Now it is working again....phew.

I'm using the Storm 2, I did everything correctly step by step but it doesn't even list the UNKNOWN pin when I connect it without a battery.

Can't tell you how thrilled I was to get this to work for me today. Really bailed me out and saved me at least two hours of waiting around at a VzW Store.

The only difference is with my version of BB Desktop Manager, I could not find App Loader in the Blackberry folder. I just ran App Loader from within Desktop Manager and it worked like a charm.

My 8520 got nuked and i tried all that was stated in the tutorial but nothing happen. then i stumbled across the command line post and pronto i was up and running in like 5 mins, phew!!! THANKS A BUNCH mxdudpup...

Where corporate IT and Sprint tech support failed, Crackberry came through flawlessly. Thanks for the excellent, easy to follow instructions!

THANKS - followed the nuke repair here and worked like charm...very simple process. Just an FYI for those browsing this post remember to always back up periodically it makes the fact you are completely resetting your phone less harmless overall. Though most likely if reading this its to late - anyway great and very useful post.

I hope this article is usefull for my frinds in Indonesia

I have a BB Pearl Flip. So I think this has happened before but removing the battery fixed it sometime later that day.

I don't think there is any water damage, but how do I know if it is? The only time I can think of where it could have gotten water damage is when I leave it on the bathroom counter when I take a shower.

Anyways, today I checked it a few hours ago and noticed it had a white screen and a clock with the hand going around and around. Then screen blacks out and the red light goes on. Not flashing, just stays on. Now it keeps going back and forth between that. I have taken the memory card out and put it back with the battery in and out of the phone. I have taken the battery out numerous times, left it out as well, and it still keeps doing the same thing. Its currently plugged in too and not sure what's up with it.

I have no USB cable to hook it to my computer (or at least not sure where I'd have put it). What could be wrong with it? Other possible fixes? I do not have any other phone and ALL my contacts and other stuff is on my phone. Would doing this reload OS delete all the contacts and other stuff saved up? Things like this make me wonder if I should have gotten an iPhone.

Iv just tryed to turn my Blackberry Bold 9000, which hasnt been used in about a month and the battery was dead, for some reason when i go to charge it, nothing happens only a red light at the top and sometimes the charge symbol comes on , i left it charge for like 8 hours , took the battery out to no provail, so now i thought maybe the OS was screwed so i tryed to upload a new one following the directions of "BlackBerry 101: How to Reload the Operating System on a Nuked BlackBerry" but when i get to Wait for device initilization it, the usb goes crazy again and disconects on and off and at the end comes up with this "Unable to reconnect to the device during a multi-stage load operation". any one got some suggestions

I got my "Nuked" BB back to life . The step by step process you have put up is awesome . Thanks , Now only if there was a way to recover some lost data .

Thanks so much. I downloaded a free animated theme from the app store and it fried my Curve (it was the animated aquarium, beware). I am so grateful that you made this tutorial. to the rescue, again!

I saw your solution but there is another problem I cant download OS for my Blackberry because when I tried I got message your countries is not support( I am from Serbia). I know that my Blackberry is Orange made in Canada. Can you help me!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????

Hi - I have tried to follow the steps above and when I get the "COM1" part my PC doesn't list COM1 but I do still follow through and click next after plugging and seeing the Unknown...the next issue is that i don't see an application listing it shows nothing other than an message that my BB Desktop Software does not have BBDevice SW for the device that you have connected to the SA etc.

What am I missing? Can someone please help me?

Appreciate it! Karen

my bb 8320 does not turn on. screen stays black and when plugged into the comp via USB, the red LED flashes and the computer continuously plays the USB connect/disconnect alert while trying to re-load the OS.

it gets passed the "Load JVM and system software" step, and then when it gets to the "Wait for device initialization" it goes to crap. that's when the USB connect/disconnect alert goes non-stop until i get the message "Unable to connect to the BlackBerry device after a multi stage boot process".

i've tried doing the battery pull trick. i've done this process so many times and nothing works.

any ideas???

after the whole usb-unknown thing and i press next then it says "the bb desktop software doesn't have the bb device software for the service you have connected to the computer. contact your wireless provider or system administrator" am i doing something wrong or is my bb gone completely??

Im getting the same message with my Curve 8520, anyone have a solution?

Man, awesome post!

A little tip that might be useful (I didn't remember it for 3hours trying) is that if it's not working the first time, try to uninstall both DM and the OS, clean registry, setup it all again. Worked for me :)
Think it's already posted somewhere though...

Anyway, thanks :)

Thanks for this guide. I tend to run leaks and hybrids so this was bound to happen and it did. I nuked my Bold 9700 but this instruction set allowed me to recover it.

is there a reason why the application loader will not recognize my device when I plug it in? I am following this exactly like it shows but I get to the part to select my applications and it shows an error and shows there is no system software? Any ideas?

After my second 8900 gave me this error code, reload software 552, I was about to give up. I couldn't get my phone to do anything. Nothing, nothing, nothing. This 8900 cost me $500.00 and my phone company wasn't going to give me another phone cause they said it was my fault for the phone's failure. They have a monopoly here in Anchorage. Anyway, after several attempts of trying your procedure with the App. loader, I finally got it to clear and now my phone is working. I deleted the
App. from the App. loader from my computer that I had just installed that cause the problem and immediately my phone went into reboot. Thank you Jesus.

Bought a new bb and somehow nuked the s/w on the second day, would have had to rush to a service center with a total cost of 80 kms and 4 hrs of my time, your post saved me all of that, Thank a tonne!

Just got my phone from my daughter, decided to load a theme that I guess didn't agree and pow, app error 200. Fantastic guide that got me up and running again in 45 minutes. Was fortunate enough to have backed up the BB before I decided to tinker with it.
Thanks again.

from a Normal working phone i tried to Upgrade, to A BB with a blank screen and red lights flashing..
This Post made it work, thoug i tried a couple of times.
I'll advice pple to use the command line to launch the Application loader:
cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\loader
Also ensure that you launch command prompt with Administrative rights.
The rest is in the Post Above. Right on point i must say.

I had to use the PIN:UNKNOWN thing to simply load an OS yesterday, Loader didn't recognize 2 OS versions :O
Anyways, it worked ahaha
Always handful :)

I'm currently using curve 8520,this afternoon i removed the battery/hard reset, when i put the battery back, the phone's red light just blink and it started to reboot, but it then shutdown and blink again, reboot, shutdown, and so when i try using this method i got stuck in device application selection menu,it says "the blackberry desktop software does not have blackberry device software for the device that you have connected to the computer..."
what should i do?....thanks in advance

This procedure rocks! I wasted time at the Verizon store last night and requested an OS reload. The tech couldn't do it and tried to sell me new hardware. I reloaded the OS using these instructions this morning over coffee, and I now have control over my Storm again - thank you for taking the time to write it up!

For me, this is definitely the most useful article for my BB Curve 8520 (Rogers). Since getting this BB back in April, I have 'nuked' it about 6 or 7 times. Although I love the device, I find it annoying and very time consuming reloading the software so often. To make matters worse, this procedure only covers the O/S - not my 3rd party apps (off which I have many). I'm afraid to try new software for fear of something going wrong. I was a Palm faithful for many years and I don't remember having so many crashes. When my Palm did crash, I had the option to reload ALL my apps from the SD card. Does anyone know of an app that would allow me to reload my apps from the memory card? RIM are you listening??

Though I did find this article very comforting due to the amount of detail and was lacking one thing, directions on how to accomplish restoring a Nuked Blackberry using a MAC rather than a PC. Currently, all i have at my disposal is my boyfriends Apple, were as my PC is unavailable and my office PC has way too many restrictions.

if anyone has this information, or can point me in the right direction on finding the AppLoader on a MAC, it would help me out a great deal, as I am not in a position to get a new phone and I use my Blackberry for EVERYTHING.

Thank you much!

I sleep last night while my Bold9700 was charging on my PC, when I wake up this morning, I had this white screen saying "JVM ERROR 545". I managed to came across to this site with instruction on How to recover from this situation, many hours I spent and when I reach to the Steps #3. The Application Loader Wizard.
Only the Add and Cancel Button is enabled. The rest, even the 4 Application Name written on the box is dimmed or disabled.

Application Name
The BlackBerry Desktop Software does not have
BlackBerry Device Software for the device that
you have connected to computer.Contact
your wireless service provider or system administrator

Can anyone help me, or let me know where I miss a step or something here.

Thanks so much

Did you make sure to have the right Software DL'd on your comp b4 proceeding?

I came across the same thing when I try'd this, and once I got the right OS on my comp everything was copacetic

Thanks alot Kevin :)
This article and pictures where very helpful as I need to fix my blackberry curve which was nuked by my lil cousin some how? He kept turning it off... I like your use of words in this article as you made me laugh from time to time.(ex. I’m not sure if nuked is the technically appropriate word for it (I also use one that starts with an F and ends in an ED and has a CK in the middle), but it is how I refer to a BlackBerry that is stuck in a permanent reboot cycle and is completely unusable.) ahahhaah or hourglass of death. lmfao
Anyways it made me laugh and thanks to you I don't have to get a new phone :) Thanks alot and can you name some more reasons that can cause a nuked blackberry?

Peace. My name is Kevin to LMFAO :)

i go thru the steps but when it gets to the jvm step i get an error message saying that it cannot connect to the device.also when it says wait for device intialization it begins to reboot again please help.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was updating my o/s when suddenly my computer shut off! Yikes, now what? Well I knew I could count on CB to help and everything worked first time. Thank you so much for this valuable information.

Thank you for this tutorial as it got my 8530 back up and running in 3/4 hour!
It worked the first time, and all my apps and email addys were intact!
I just have to reload my contact list and I am off to the RACES!!!!
Thank you!

kevin i tried everything. i used the jl commander and i also used your tutorial and when i get to the part where u have to load the the software it says that i have to uninstall some of the apps. i dont have any apps on my phone and it wont let me do anything else. please help.

I dont have the App loader in my Folder :( the only thing there is a .dll file called application_loader and i dont know how to open that since it wont open on its own! im dying without my bb and i need it to work :( PLEASE HELP

i've tried doing the steps whenever i clicked next after choosing the USB:UNKNOWN connection option, it won't let me go through... app loader shows me "fatal error msg"... what do i need to do about this??

I get to the 2nd stage where you enter the Communication Port Selection. It is supposed to say COMM 1 but mine says nothing. Even when I plug in my blackberry, it still stays blank. What do I do now?

i followed all the steps on this guide, and was able to reach "The loading operation was successful". but in the end, waiting for it to work like magic, i was still stuck in the nightmare of the white screen and the clock, then turning off, then back to the white screen again. help!

I am the least technical person in the world but..... thanks to this step by step blog I un-nuked my sister's Tour(if VZW was going to upgrade to a Bold I wouldn't have bothered instead of a refurbed Tour). Too bad she hadn't backed up in months! But thanks CB:)

i keep receiving the following error when after i hit next from the USB-PINUNKNOWN

***A connection to the device could not be established. Please ensure that the device is properly connected to the cradle or USB cable, and that the cradle or USB cable is connected securely to your computer. Also ensure that the device has completed any startup operations. Then run the Application Loader Wizard again.****

Thanks for your help!!

Hi guys!
I tried to fix the problem with my BlackBerry 8820, but I came what is pictured. Will help me to fix it?

You saved my 9700 (6 weeks after purchase), I'm now a very loyal customer.

Had a reset loop with a JVM Error 517 message. Reloaded the software per "Reloading the Operating System on a BlackBerry that’s totally Nuked," and I am back in business. I was worried about how long the restart took after the software load completed, but other than that, it was totally stress free. Thanks!

Hi there, thx for the tutorial, but btw, it doesn't work for me. My blackberry bold 9700 got "reload software : 507" 3 hours after I bought it. It happened 'cuz when i tried to update it, it stucked at "loading application (step 9 of 11)" and then I cancelled it by force. When I tried to reupdate, it stucked again but at "loading application (step 5 of 7)". I've tried your video, and something strange. In your video, it's "Loading JAVA Application", but in mine, just "Loading application" --> specially at loading module "net_rim_platform_resource__en_US.cod" , AND IT STUCK FOREVER!!!! ( I even once let it for 6 hours!)I've also tried all other way to update, like from the blackberry's official site, and also from DM 5.0.1

Can you help me? I really appreciate it, THX ^^

i have a 8520 from tmobile that was nuked and i have 4.6 and the newest 5.0.1s but the loader program will not recogize the OSs i have installed on the computer. any more insight??

and to make matters worse i tried to download the OS from tmobile and the link redirects you to the shop for phones section. no luck i really would like to know what OS you all had loaded and had success with your 8520s

I'm having an issue with a Storm 9530 with a constant reboot JVM error 507 or something, I have tried this but when it comes to the point where it should say PIN UNKNOWN it actually shows my pin... and I keep getting caught up when DM is trying to reconnect to JVM the device keeps going to the JVM error screen and powering off and on again... I have been at this for 4 hours straight to no avail... I think I'm about to lose my mind on this!!!

Great post, but it didn't work for me. After the re-install during the device initializatin it went back into the loop. I'm afraid its really toast. Any other ideas?

Just a little info for everyone MAKE SURE TO USE a 32 bit os preferrably xp...had tons of issues with windows 7 64bit first try with 32bit xp got it working. Great post btw. Thank you very much fixed my storm that had Reload Software 507.

Hi Kevin,

What a wonderful note you have written. It is as easy as learning ABC. I want to report yet another blackberry revived!!

For the benefit of others, I want to report what all did I do.

1-Used the dessicant material (small sachets usually come with leather bags that prevent moisture/fungus on leather)to absorb moisture from the phone. I left it in a small plastic bag for a week or so.

2-When I plugged it in after a week, the red LED came to life, though the phone was not coming on. Please remember that the LED only indicates that the power is going through the phone, but the internal battery for the phone was drained out completely.

3-I carried out what you have suggested. The applications got loaded and pulled it out.

4-It didn't work still. When I pressed the power on button, the LED blinked red for a while and then stopped completely. You know why? Because there wasn't any charge in the battery. Strangely, when I tried another battery, the same thing happened. So, I guess, there is some sort of backup battery charge that had drained out completely.

5-After following Kevin's advice, please leave the phone connected to your laptop for a while (till the backup battery comes to life) and the voila, your phone will come back to life.

This article is very out of date, the process has changed slightly new desktop software an OS6 would be nice if these were updated.

This article is very out of date, the process has changed slightly new desktop software an OS6 would be nice if these were updated.

I have a BB Storm and it's stuck in a reboot cycle. I tried the steps mentioned in this article and all goes well until that "waiting for device initialization" step, it's the second one. So after the Load JVM and System software finishes the device restarts and it's the loop again, then I get an error message (after it restarts for like 3 or 4 times) stating that connection to device could not be made! What do I do? I am desperate because I really need help on this. I bought mine from Vodafone Germany and I am in Syria now. The blackberry services don't work but others work just fine(calls, texting) I don't know if this is relevant but before the restart loop began, I got an 532 error. My phone worked after that, I got it fixed but when I tried to update to 5.0, the restart loop happened.

I tried downgrading to 4.7 and whattay know, I got a step ahead. The phone actually starts now, so no reboot loop but still taking too long to "reconnect to JVM"...

So, I have a battery charging sign on the screen and that "couldn't connect to blackbeery device error" pops up again, I'm thinking battery? I am gonna wait then try to do the same process again! Will keep posted.

So I unplugged the device cuz the "reconnecting to JVM" kept repeateing tiself so I got a "Device in cal mode" screen. I pressed mute then esc then sleep then menu and nothing happened!

So here's what I did, after I plugged it back it and nothing happened(the "menu button pressed" message was still on) I removed the battery and put it back and now it's loading the operating system! :D

I tried updating the OS cuz the one I have now is ancient. I apparently can't cuz My pin is ffffffffffffffffff any help on that?

I spent close to 6 hours posting on forums and trying to figure out app 523 error! No luck but then realized that my BB was nuked and thats when I chanced upon your video!!!

Simple and effective, I was literally sweating to see the Update Successful screen, so much so that I was playing the video over and over again hoping the same happened to me(lame I know) Luckily, this worked!! I am sooooo happy that my BB is back, the apps are gone but wth I can download them anytime!!!

Thanks a ton,

This just saved my butt, major league, after a half-hour on the phone with an otherwise very helpful Verizon tech wasn't able to resolve the constant rebooting. While Verizon was willing to send me a new Tour (still under warranty), I would have been without a BlackBerry for several days and would have had to reload all my apps, anyway.

Tip: If you have protected your BlackBerry with a password, after the step where you immediately click "Next" when "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN" appears, you will be prompted for that password. Don't forget that if you used numbers with dialing letter equivalents on the BlackBerry keyboard (e.g., 5 is d), you'll need to use the lower-case letter equivalents on your computer keyboard to enter the password and go to the next step.

That said, thanks Crackberry. This was an hour I'll never get back, but it was an hour well spent to save me a lot of additional hassle.

grubbydog into 'exception' failed to load.

Did 'reinstall' as instructed above, worked a treat on my second go, ...totally amazing stuff, many thanks.

back in biz.

Thanks again !!

I tried the method outlined in this article but to no avail. I continually get the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have the Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to your computer..."

I've downloaded the latest OS from Verizon... 5.0 I believe for my Storm 2 but I still get the same message.

I'm running Desktop Manager 6.0

Any help here would be appreciated...

I tried to follow every step that's on the video but when I get to USER PIN it's not UNKNOWN but it shows the pin of my device. What shall I do? the screen is white and the signal of ''busy'' is on. I did a battery pull, the signal still there. Did my blackberry die?

so basically ive done all these steps...i have a black berry 8320 which i accidently disconnected while updating the OS to 4.5 i get the 507 error then i downloaded 5 different versions of the OS and i still get the same problem as i did initially..everytime i get to the loading applications step (step 4) it gives me an error.. sometimes halfway through and sometimes within seconds..ive changed usb cables and ports..tried it with allowing the pc to turn off device to save power and even tried disabling the power save from the stumped and i think im going to go mad pretty soon. ive read how its helping everybody but i just cant seem to get it to using desktop manager 6.0 incase thats important..since i even tried to update it online from that but i get nothing except those errors..sometimes i get a white screen OS where i have a few options but i cant open them either due to some error ive even download jl_cmndr...please help me out as ive googled everything and i cant get it to work at was working fine until i felt like i needed to update it...thank you (this is my first time here so im sorry if i didnt follow protocol)

the error i get is `the application loader could not connect to your blackberry device. Try the following actions....

Everything seems to go well until it tries to wait for device initialization, which is starts doing it's reboot loop and says "Application Loader was unable to connect with your device. Please re-connect your device, enter the password, if required, and click Retry."

Can anyone help me, telus is being a jerk and trying to make me buy a new phone

Hi my curve 8900 has been nuked last night.
before trying to reload OS on it is it possible to access to the internal memory and recover phonebook?
when I connect BB to my PC BB Device Manager recognize it, I can also find it in Desktop Manager in the list but can't access to my BB.
Data in the Phonebook are very important to me,didn't made backup in time :(.
could someone help me?

My phone turned into a brick after trying to update my software using Blackberry Manager. AT&T was unable to assist me and the Blackberry website was completely useless. Using your process, I was able to load the software and I now have a brand new working Blackberry Bold. Thank you so much for the easy instructions on BlackBerry 101.

I found a bold and it was stuck on a white screen with the ticking clock and then switched to a black screen and the red LED light flashing. i downloaded the operating system for it and the desktop program. i conceted it to the loaer. it found my pin and it asked for the password. i tried 10 times and it deleted everything on the device. i tried the loader again and it started concecting to the device. its gets to where the process goes to nd tries to connect to the JVM. It stays there and tells me i the cpu can't connect. Please help. I really want to get this thing working. Please and thank you:)

my phone is currently nuked and in the sage of turning on , the screen going white then the display shutting off. I have went through the stages of re booting my phone but when coming onto the app loader wizard it's saying ' the blackberry desktop software does not have the blackberry device software for the device that you have connected to the computer' .......... So does any 1 help me to find the device software i need and how to put it onto my phone please to re-start my blackberry curve 8520 smartphone !

thanks !

Thanks for the post, I've fixed a couple of BB's for myself and friends. Now I'm stuck with one that hasn't been backed up in ages and has vital information on it. Is there a way to back up a device before replacing the OS?

I am getting the dreaded JVM error 545 on my Storm, but before I begin this OS reload, wanted to know if there are any hacks for recovering data prior? All I need off of the device are notes I took in Memo pad.

I tried the sequence above, but I don't get anything in the wizard drop down where you have COM1. Then when I plug in the device it doesn't go to USB:PIN UNKNOWN it goes directly to USB:PIN 257A9A5E (my PIN). When I clike Next it requires the password then goes to the Device Application Selection screen, but there are no applications loaded. What am I missing?

Thank You sooooo much for this information. I would have never been able to restore my bold if not for this article. I did not know that I was capable, great easy to follow step by step instuctions were great! Thanks Again!!!!!

I cant get it to go to unknown, it recognizes the phone/pin right away and I dont get the chance to select unknown. Can anyone help. I am using windows 7. I have gone through the steps at least 8 times with no luck, it does everything but is still stuck on the loop.

hi Kevin I have a 8300 which died when being updated, so I followed the guidelines above.
Its still not working and I think it is because the pc recognises the pin immediately I don't get the pin unknown message at all
it goes through the whole process and says it has been successful. but it wont boot although I have a timer showing instead of the JVM 547 reset message which I had before
Any help would be great
ps I'm not very good at this stuff so it needs to be in 'noddy' language

Hi guys,

Well, everything is fine until the moment when its installing all those stuff. then my bb connects out and in and out and in again. although ive selected usb pin unknown. i dont know whats wrong

ive got a blackberry bold

please help me!!!

Worked like a charm ty so much for this info

Well... after reading all of these recent posts I am assuming my Curve really is NUKED!

I can't get an OS from my carrier, and BB's website wasn't much more help..
I paid $250 for a phone that died within a few months.

Why does this happen? I only added one app and that was FaceBook...

I'm thinking a new phone is in order... and it WON'T be a BlackBerry...

in the middle of it, but under STEP 2 - where it shows "Application Loader Wizard" under CONNECTION - It NEVER shows ANYTHING in that drop down box - it never shows - USB-PIN:Unknown or anything -

when I plug into the USB I just get an error saying USB not recognized

Hi mate, you have to go to > C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
and then find a file called 'Vendor.xml' and delete that.. after you've done this it should be working fine :)

I'd JUST GOTTEN my BRAND NEW Blackberry Curve 8530, and in doing the switch device wizard thing (I had another model...) it asks me to reboot, I say yes and the next thing I know it's gone into this crazy reboot-till-the-end-of-time-cycle-but-never-actually-turn-on-thing from hell! Your article saved me and my never before been used Blackberry!!! Thanks sooooooo much!!!!!

Right, so i get past everything without the device disconnecting and it starts to erase the apps etc .. but then after it ticks off 'Load JVM and system software' it goes to the next step and the device starts disconnecting! :|
So then it says 'reconnecting JVM' or something and then an error message pops up and says something like 'please disconnect and connect your device again and click retry' .. when i get to this point it just doesn't seem to go any further :( .. help anyone?!

To Whomever can help me!

So my BlackBerry Pearl flip 8230 just went Black when I hit "send" to reply to an email! Only sign of life is the red light that sometimes flashes on for a few seconds and then off. The Service reps @ Bell said my phone was fried! I've only had it 18 months! I still have another 18 months left on my contract with Bell...don't want to have to purchase another BB so soon...not very impressed!

I tried the above, I am able to get past the "USB-PIN: UNKOWN", however I can't get past "Device Application" window, as nothing shows up under "Application Name", etc., just says there are no applications!!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance!

My Verizon Tour died on Saturday and I was devastated. I went to the Verizon store after trying some things on my own and they worked on it for about 20 minutes and could not do anything with it. I should have known that I would have to do it myself. The only thing Verizon Store employees are good for is making you wait in line.

On Saturday night, I tried many additional things like BBSAK. Again, nothing worked, so today I went in and paid the upgrade fee to get a new phone-the Bold 9650. I was setting up the new device and looking to fix the old one concurrently. I finally ran across this article and decided to give it a try. It would not work without the battery (which I tried first) but it did work with the battery installed.

The phone booted up with no problem after I followed the steps above. The bootup took about 5 minutes. I still have the Bold and will probably keep it and use the Tour as a spare. Either way, I have 30 days to decide what to do.

No matter how fast I try to plug in my USB cable and hit the next button, my BB is immediately detected. Then I'm prompted for my password, etc. Cannot bypass the attempted rebooting in order to get into Application Loader. Any suggestions?? I'm using a BB Tour 9630, Verizon....

so ive treid everything when im at the app loader it doesnt say "UNKNOWN" it actually pulls my pin up. i went through the entire process but right before it completes an error message comes up indicating that the app loader was unable to connect to my device. ive tried everything i went through dos ive downloaded the OS tried different batteries ect. is there any other way???

worked for me, I own you one.....

Thank you! Nuked my BB 2 days ago. I had a 4.6 OS then.
First I downloaded the OS (which for me I got the latest for OS5). I followed the instructions. Lo and behold, my BB is up and running again. What was hard for me was downloading the OS. LOL!

i tried all, but none worked on my 8900.
on app loader, screen 2, i get nothing in drop down menu, nothing before connecting in anyway and nothing after. also my phone is not in constant re-boot cycle. it just shows reload 552 and that's it. when battery removed, naturally nothing but the redlight. i can never get anything to see my phone. not the bdm, not the bsac not the apploader.
what is it? totally dead?

Hi, I have a 8320 Curve that is driving me nuts!!!!!
When I insert the battery, or connect it to the pc, the LED stays on for about a minute, then starts to flash.
The phone is not recognised at all by the pc, and it doesn't matter what USB port its connected too either.
I have tried every program out there to try and get this phone to connect, but nothing seems to work.
When I try to use the apploader to reinstall the OS, I don't even get the option of USB: Unknown, as the window is blank.
Any help in trying to solve this would be fantastic.

I have tried the steps over and over and no matter what I can't get the OS to install. I have read forums and watched videos for 3 days now.

Thank you! I am a newbie on BB and my new tour went nuked! This guide revived my phone! Thanks again.

My storm has crashed completely.
The screen displays nothing.
I started the apploader application, connected the phone (without battery) but it directly shows the PIN number of my device. Nothing like "USB-PIN:UNKNOWN"
It fails to go beyond the "Reconnecting to JVM" and says it couldn't connect to the device.

any suggestions?

Install DM 5.0. That should give you the USB-PIN: UNKNOWN screen.

Did this suggestion work ? I'm having the same exact problem

hey bud,

thanks for the great guide, you really helped me out, i am putting together a mass guide witgh all main issues and tweaks for the bb bold, hope you dont mind if i use your guide? (credits will be assigned).

pm me if there are any issues! :)

I have a sprint 8530 but i want to switch it to Metro PCS.The phone doesn't even want to charge it just turns on and stays on reload software 507.
I downloaded the BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1424 for Metro i started to do the steps and nothing happend so I deleted the vender.xml and *
I started the apploader application, connected the phone (without battery) but it directly shows the PIN number of my device. Nothing like "USB-PIN:UNKNOWN".It fails to go beyond the "Reconnecting to JVM" and says it couldn't connect to the device"
;it go me to the 3rd step( where i put a charged battery in) passed where you choose what you want installed to the part where it loads the JVM but after that it starts booting and connecting/disconnecting again and again.

I think that the usb port on the phone might be bad but, if so why does it get read by my computer ?

We connect the BB, then hit Next when it shows the USB connection but on the next screen it says that the blackberry does not have device software for the connection. any ideas on what to do now?
I know from other posts that we have to download the OS, but hey, we had v5.0 on the BB and we can just only Update the Device software currently, not download the OS.
How can we get the download in this process of restoring it on the nuked BB?

hi how can i change my bold 900 from english to spanish if my software dosent have the system to change it? and the desktop manager dosent letme put spanish only: english, turky, portugues, plis help meee :(

I have a Nextel 8350i that came with the 4.204 firmware and I upgraded to the 5.0 and everything went fine. I tried to install some third-party themes and it messed up my display on the phone. I decided to re-load v5.0 back onto the phone when my laptop went into hibernate mode and couldn't get my screens back. After spending hours I was able to get and old version back on the phone but I'd really like v5 to be on there since it fixes problems with drop calls. So far I've wasted 2 days and numerous of hours trying to get the OS back on the phone. I got the OS directly from Nextel. I tried all the tools, JL_Cmder, BBSAK, CrackUtil and BB Master control Program. It seems that these large COD files just do not want to copy on the phone without getting the application loader message and constantly losing what seems to be a USB connection. I've turned off the Power Management to all the USB slots (Dell XPS M1710). I've already used 4 different cables and this just doesn't want to work. I even tried downgrading to 2 previous versions of the OS and same thing. I've wiped the phone numerous times and even tried to manually load the net_rim_cldc.cod file since it always crashes on that file. I've used the javaloader -u on that file and it starts to copy and it stops midpoint. I've watched this video and the only difference is that on my USB-Unknown I have USB-BP with a pin number. So I took my sim card out to see if I would get the unknown usb and it still showed my pin number. I just got this on friday from my company and I really need to get it back working. Any suggestions on what else I can do? I even tried the loader /nojvm option. BTW: I'm not using the desktop management program to do all this, straight using the loader.exe. Thank you BB members.

my cousin had the same problem and i just went on the blackberry website and followed these simple steps and it worked straight away.

Complete the following steps:

1.Verify that the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager and the current BlackBerry Device Software (for your BlackBerry smartphone) is installed on the computer.

2.Remove the battery from the BlackBerry smartphone. Do not re-insert the battery.

3.Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager on the computer.

4.Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer using a USB cable.

5.On the BlackBerry Desktop Manager main screen, click Application Loader.

6.In the Update Software area of the Application Loader, click Start. 7.Click Options. This allows you to add or remove applications from the BlackBerry smartphone.

8.Select the applications that you want to install.

9.Click Next.

10.Click Next.

11.Click Finish.

12.When the application load process starts, insert the battery into the BlackBerry smartphone.
hope this helps everybody else.

evverything worked up untill the last step, when i clicked finish a message popped up saying 'an error has occured while downloading software for your device. Please verify your internet connection orr try again later, if the problem persits.' any ideas from desperate

hi, is there a way to do this on a mac? i've been looking for the apploader on the BB Desktop Manager on the Finder but couldn't find it. I've already made sure that my BB DM is the latest version.

Appreciate any help on this. thank you

Awesome tutorial, MANY thanks. Sometimes when you're stressed by a tech failure / lost data it's nice to have 'for dummies'-style instructions with pictures - made the whole thing a lot less stressy. Lost a bit of data but got the BB back from the graveyard - THANKS!

I got to the second step, but when i had the battery pulled, and plugged my device in, it didnt say USB-PIN:Unknown, it had the pin number ...

I tried all this, but in the apploader, it doesnt say USB PIN UNKNOWN when i plug it in... it says USB PIN **** so what does that mean?

Ok, I could really use some help. I dropped my blackberry the other day and it's doing exactly how Kevin explains here. So I decided to give this a try, like 6-7 tries. Everything always works fine for me until it gets to the updateing your device in the application loader wizard. I get to the wait for device initialization, and it says something like connecting to jvc, and then pops up and says it can't find my device, to reconnect it. I do everything Kevin says, I put the battery back in after it starts running, I've even left my battery out waiting to get past that part, so I can put it in after I know it's going to go past that part and it still doesn't work. Other people say to try to upload the osv4.3 instead, but I can't find that one no where. I did find the osv4.2, but that's not working either. I could really use some help. Thanks

Your fix fixed my brand new 9700!
I installed a bad theme which left it locked on the Home screen. No resetting or battery pulling could fix it.

By getting in via your AppLoader back door I was able to connect during the reboot cycle and then uninstall the dud theme.
Now back to as new (thank goodness!)

Thanks a lot!

hello i am trying to fix my stupid nuked blackberry and i do everything that you have said, yet once i get to the Device Application Selector screen a message comes up that says 'The blackberry desktop software does not have blckberry device software for the device that you have connected to the computer' so i tried downloading my OS software and i did and than the message stillll came up, has the option to add the application name, but im not sure what application im searching for to add...please help!

But I do- i have DM installed and just recently backed up this same!!

i have a blackberry torch 9800, and it just shut down on me recently with the symbol of a battery with a big red 'x' over the top of it. so i decided to do this little tutorial in hope that my phone would start running as normal again!

with step two, when i connected my phone it came up with USB-PIN except that mine did not say UNKNOWN, i actually have numbers. i decided to just go ahead anyway, and then in step three on the updating your device, my phone gets stuck on "wait for device to initialize." my phone doesnt seem to want to stay connected to my laptop, and even when i re-connect, it still does the same thing and doesnt seem to want to..

help anyone? please!

My BB 8520 is nuked I am stuck in Step 2 , more than 50 times I have tried it but I receive a new window "Device application selection"the message "the blackberry desktop software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer." without any where to go but the Cancel button . Plz any help

I've tried many different combinations of plugging in usb cables and removing them, taking out batteries and putting them back in, but cannot get the Desktop Manager past the "Connecting to the Device (ARM)" step.

Circumventing the DM, I tried running the apploader but it crashes before it can connect to the blackberry. I can't get the app loader to display USB:Unknown

I'm running windows xp on vmware
Blackberry 9700

I ran into this problem after botching an upgrade to OS6. I wiped it successfully with jl_cmder and now it boots to a 507 error

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm stuck at this point!

My 9700 gets stuck where it says device initilization. Help?

I downloaded the OS 6 onto my mac, then transfered it to my PC on order to do the process but the PC is saying that it is not the right format for my Torch... It is not picking up any new OS or any OS to install on the phone. I.e. I am stuck at step 3.

This saved my BB!! Absolutely perfect step by step instructions. Just follow all the instructions and you cant go wrong.
As for all those who are commenting bout the USB pin not coming up as unknown- my phone usb came up and I simply clicked next. Despite it NOT displaying unknown, the steps still worked and I managed to successfully install the software on my phone.

Also in response to the comments regarding regarding the apploader displaying the message to say there is no available software, you MUST download the software that you wish to install on your device from: ";jsessionid=4CCDDC...
Then simply follow the instructions above.

You cant go wrong :)

My situation takes a different turn.

I take out the battery from my Blackberry Curve 8530, which is in Reboot-Purgatory. I run the AppLoader program. I click Next to get to the Communications Port screen, which has nothing in its drop-down list. Once I plug the USB from the computer into my BB, after a couple of seconds the option USB-PIN: XXXXXXXX (my BB pin) appears as the only drop-down option, and not UNKNOWN.

So I click Next, and instead of what the dude in the video says will happen, up pops a dialogue box, asking me to enter my Device Password (which a friend of mine said is 1234, and the default value on most phones). I type 1234 and click Next. From there, nothing happens, except the Back and Next buttons are greyed out. After about a minute or two or five, the same dialogue box appears, asking me to enter the Device Password with (1/10) attempts left. No matter what i type in as a password, the next dialogue box always says (1/10) attempts left. So, it doesn't even allow me to screw up 10 times so I can wipe out my BB and be able to use it again.

Any suggestions, besides stomping it to death? Sorry, i am utterly frustrated. Maybe someone needs to reboot me as well.
