BIS 2.8 Upgrade Coming Sooner Than We Think?

We got a tip this morning that there is a rumoured data outage for October 3rd. During that time, we are told RIM will be kicking it up and upgrading to BIS 2.8 for North American carriers. We originally thought the update would come in September, but in the style of Desktop Manager for Mac, being fashionably late in October may be the way to go.
"There is a RIM infrastructure upgrade scheduled for 10/03/2009 at 2:01:00 AM EST. During the maintenance window RIM will update the BIS Platform to Version 2.8 that supports the Americas; according to RIM all Blackberry Internet Services are expected to be down for 240 minutes. According to RIM this will affect all carriers on the North America Relay."

Features
Enhancements to email setup and settings:
Automatic Login now supports most billing identifiers, which allows new subscribers with wireless service providers that use PIN, IMEI, or ESN as a billing identifier to create BlackBerry Internet Service accounts from the BlackBerry smartphone, without having to create a login user name and password
Note: This feature will be available approximately one week after the BlackBerry Internet Service upgrade.
Windows Live™ Hotmail® revalidation:
With BlackBerry Internet Service 2.8, new Windows Live Hotmail mail integrations will be defaulted to a protocol that is designed so as not to require 90 day reauthorization.
Note: Existing BlackBerry smartphone users accessing Windows Live Hotmail using Microsoft® MSP will still be required to revalidate their Windows Live Hotmail account every 90 days.

Thanks you RIM. I use Windows Live @live.com and was a bit annoyed by the 90day having to login to my account but I just accepted it and made sure I checked my mail online from a computer just because.

So whats going to be new with the update?
editz*** nvm
When are they going to update the syncing...as when i delete on a comp it deletes on my phone!
aubiker#cb Oct 1, 2009 at 10:39 am
It depends on the email provider. I use Yahoo and it deletes just like BES. I read/delete it on my device, same thing happens on the computer. I read/delete it on the computer, same thing happens on the device. Just like it was designed. Unfortunatly, Yahoo is the only one currently providing this capability.

So it has nothing to do with RIM in other words
ChicagoBBaddict Oct 1, 2009 at 10:31 am
If you read the original post is states that 5.0 is required for some functions. So how soon to the official 5.0?
jeffreii Oct 1, 2009 at 11:09 am
5.0 soon after this please, RIM!
devGOD Oct 1, 2009 at 11:15 am
how did they come up with the time of 240mins/4hrs? wonder if it'll only take 30mins but they're giving themselves extra time for "OH SH!T thats not suppose to happen" errors
MRCUR Oct 1, 2009 at 12:54 pm
I would assume RIM has extra time built into that schedule for any issues that might happen. It's good practice to ALWAYS add extra time when anything is down for upgrades in case of this.
I think Microsoft learned this the hard with the some of the extended Xbox LIVE outages of the past.

So when will BIS have true push like BES?
I hate the 15 min polling period. That's the only BIS update I'm looking foward to.
The rest of this crap is just fluff.
TallyHo Oct 1, 2009 at 11:53 am
What are you talking about? BIS is true push and there is no polling period. What email service are you using? I have gmail and it pushes to my phone instantly.
agirl65 Oct 1, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I have yahoo, and no polling period for me either.
Blacklac Oct 1, 2009 at 12:51 pm
I get AOL emails on my BB before they are on my PC!
MRCUR Oct 1, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Like the others have said, what are you talking about? BIS is true push for most email services. Something like a private account (school, etc.) or ISP (Comcast, Cablevision, etc.) will have a 15 min. polling period, but otherwise it's absolutely push.

2-way Gmail sync sometime in the next 10 years, please...
TBolt Oct 2, 2009 at 1:04 pm
and, we Gmail and Google Apps e-mail users ARCHIVE most of our e-mails, not delete them.
i would LOVE to see archive functionality added to BB e-mail.
casperkaroff Oct 1, 2009 at 12:45 pm
What happened to the 2 way sync with Gmail for contacts and emails that was originally discussed about a month ago. Come on RIM. You have Google stuff for BES! let's get going on the BIS stuff.
BBsoul Oct 1, 2009 at 3:35 pm
since you posted this screen shot
of the BIS login
how would i know if my carrier has already updated
because this login screen is already there
in my carriers website
and i logged in successfully
Ahhk Oct 1, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Am I the only one who has a serious issue with them starting this at 11PM (PST) on a Friday night!?!?!
I mean...WTF!
Why not just do it at 2AM Monday morning.
That is MESSED UP.
Jonneh Oct 2, 2009 at 12:09 am
lmao I know. Wtf. The weekend is when I will be having plans and needed to RELY on BIS. Pfft..
keith2k1 Oct 1, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Send it now!!! :)
rizzzzoooo Oct 1, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Will we have to re-register our bis accounts after the upgrade or will accounts transfer over automatically? Anyone know?
Jack Smash Oct 1, 2009 at 7:39 pm
You're kidding BIS will be down? That's a first..... Well at least we're getting a warning this time.
bobby1874 Oct 2, 2009 at 9:14 pm
I think its going to be a long day tomorrow after they mess this up!
