BBM (formerly BlackBerry Messenger) is a data-based instant messaging network that is exclusive to BlackBerry devices. Messages are sent over BlackBerry’s private network, ensuring security and privacy. End users have long enjoyed helpful features such as notifications which show if a message was successfully sent, if it was read, and if the other party is currently typing a response.
Since its inception, BBM has grown in functionality to include groups with shared calendars, lists and files. Application developers can also make their apps BBM-connected in a number of ways, including showcasing their app on a user’s BlackBerry Messenger profile. Music played on a BlackBerry’s native media player can also be optionally shown as a status message on BBM.
BBM has always been a BlackBerry only app, but as announced during BlackBerry Live 2013, BBM officially went cross-platform on Android and iOS on October 21, 2013.

With BBM Protected now available, the plans to monetize the service and BBM as a whole are starting to show. The folks over at BB10.ch have obtained the sign up documents for BBM Protected showing that BES 5 and BES 10 users are getting a free 30 day trial of the BBM Protected valid only between July 30 and October 31, 2014.
The sign up process is all rather easy but the monetization part comes in when the free trial is over. According to the Terms and Conditions, after the free trial is up customers who wish to continue using the service will be charged $29.99 USD per user per year (plus applicable taxes) for all users active sixty days from the Start Date. A plan that was also confirmed by BlackBerry India's MD, Sunil Lalwani previously.

To go along with the iOS update to BBM from earlier today, BlackBerry has also pushed out an update for BlackBerry 10 users, For some folks, it's not going to be a new release as it it appears this version might have came with 10.2.2 if you loaded that. However, most folks should be seeing v10.3.43.9 provided you're running 10.2.1 and not some other leaked or developer build. Long story short, if you're running a stock device, you should be seeing an update. If you're not running stock, you may already have it.
As for the changes, well it's all the things that were in the previous BlackBerry Beta Zone build such as the new add contact screen, where you can choose PIN, Email, Barcode, SMS and even invite folks from your address book to download BBM. On top of that, there's also additional support for BBM Protected and the usual 'bug fixes and improvements'.Continue Reading →

BlackBerry has been busy working on BBM. We've just seen an update to the BBM beta on Windows Phone but it seems a beta update has landed for BlackBerry 10 users too. There isn't much to this update but it does bring about a new way to add BBM contacts. There is a new Add Contact screen where you can seemingly add contacts from a suggested list or send an invite to a contact to their e-mail address. Even the scan barcode screen has been tweaked too.Continue Reading →

BlackBerry hasn't really kept the fact that BBM is coming to Windows Phone a secret. In fact, they've made several announcements on the matter with the most recent noting Windows Phone users would indeed be able to download the app at some point in 'July'. Of course, some beta testing has to occur before a roll out of the app happens and it seems that's possibly already underway as BBM has been spotted sitting there in the Windows Phone store with compatibility for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1.Continue Reading →

If you tuned into the BlackBerry Earnings call then you already know there was plenty of talk about BBM. If you tuned into the webcast, then you also know BlackBerry was showing slides as the call was happening. Among them was a slide called 'Accomplishments Nov 13' - Today' as shown above. If you look over it you'll easily see something called BBM Meetings and according to the slide, this is an already announced product but there has been no mention of it previously anywhere outside of the slides. Reading through the transcript of the earnings call, thanks to Seeking Alpha I noticed it was brought up again with mention it will see release in September.
Other major releases planned for FY '15 including the BBM for Windows in July. In September, we intend to release the BBM Meetings. In November we will release our BES12 and QNX cloud will come in in December.
That seems a bit weird to me. Almost as weird as BlackBerry ENTIRELY ignoring any mention of BlackBerry Blend despite having the icon for it right on the homescreen of the BlackBerry Passport and BlackBerry Classic in their announcement renders. So what is BBM Meetings? Well, we don't know but if I recall correctly there were rumors of BlackBerry working on a Skype like service. Skype has group calling. BBM has groups. Add in some BBM Video calling and maybe BBM Meetings is this rumored Skype like service. What do you all think it is? Sound off in the comments section and let us know what you think.Continue Reading →
According to Jeff Gadway, BBM lovers will soon be getting a new beta to check out and one specific additions has been called out and that is, the ability to use emoticons in BBM broadcast messages on BlackBerry 10. Although I'm not exactly too sure how high it was on the 'wants' list for BBM, it must have been high enough that it caught the attention on of the BBM team and they'll soon be making it available. At this point there's no estimated time given but soon can't really be that far off if it was worth a mention.Continue Reading →
