BBM now available to download for Android and iOS in Africa

By James Richardson on 25 Oct 2013 07:04 am EDT

I wasn't actually aware that BBM for Android and iOS users was not available in all regions, however I today got the following press release from BlackBerry Africa.

The below pretty much sums it up, but once again it's great to see the best cross platform instant messaging client hitting more users.

So CrackBerry people of Africa - spread the word to your iPhone and Android buddies and get them downloading BBM now!

Our non BlackBerry buddies can hit up our sister sites AndroidCentral and iMore for up to date BBM news on their platforms.

Press Release

BBM™, the iconic mobile instant messaging platform from BlackBerry®, is now available as a free download in Google Play™ and the App StoreSM in Africa, giving Android™ and iPhone users* across the continent access to one of the world's most popular mobile social networks.

The launch follows the rollout of BBM for Samsung GALAXY smartphone customers in Africa over the past three days.

The demand for BBM on Android and iPhone devices continues to be amazing. In just 24 hours BBM™ has been downloaded over 10 million times by Android™ and iPhone® users, one of the best single-day openings for a mobile app to date. To help manage the pent up demand for BBM and get everyone on the service as quickly as possible, a simple line-up system has been implemented to help ensure a smooth roll out.

To get the fastest possible access to BBM, Android and iPhone users should visit from their Android or iPhone browser. Once they’ve downloaded the app, users should launch it and enter their email address to hold their spot in line. BlackBerry will send them an email when they reach the front of the line. Customers can then log in and start using BBM.

Users among the six million who took the time to sign up at will be the first to gain access to the service. Users who aren’t among the initial group will be moved through the line as quickly as possible.

BBM for Android and iPhone features:

  • BBM Chat (One to One or Multi-Person Chat) – Enjoy real, immediate conversations with friends on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones. Not only does BBM let you know that your message has been delivered or read, it also shows you that your friend is responding to the message.
  • More than chat – With BBM you can share files on your phone such as photos and voice notes, all in an instant.
  • Keep your group in the loop – BBM Groups lets you invite up to 30 friends to chat together and goes a step further by allowing Groups to share photos, files and calendars.
  • Post Updates and stay in the know – BBM lets you simply and easily post a personal message, profile picture and your current status, and lets your contacts know instantly in Updates.

*BBM is available for Android smartphones running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x) as well as iPhones running iOS 6 and iOS 7.

That's cool... welcome Africa.

After BBM cross platform announcement - BlackBerry sales decline by 35% in Indonesia (Q2) compare to last year. Africa and India will follow very soon, good job trojan horse.

Declined... in what, four days? Not too sure you can draw an accurate correlation between the two, or call a decrease in sales over a few days period a legit decline... if it continues, then there's something to say.

Nevermind, I see that you wrote "announcement" and not "release"

Posted via CB10

... android and ios fanboys never stop bashing BB even after got BBM, even more people now advice the potential buyers not to buy BlackBerry and i doubt the BlackBerry management (includes the trojan horse) don't know this event.

like my q5, my z10 back into virgin (after ota 10.2)

These posts are just as annoying as first posts. They are not funny even if the posters say things like "just kidding "

Not funny.

Lighten up, Francis.

For awhile these childish idiotic FIRST posts went away but sadly they're back again. They are not funny (and even though I'm contributing to the problem) people have to sift through these posts to get to legit comments about the topic of the thread.

If we just acted older than my 5 year old life would be good in CB land.

So to respond to your comment, I will not lighten up....Alice.

Stop acting like a 5 year old and whinging. It's life deal with it. You're complaining about it won't stop bit but you certainly come across as the 5 year old you claim they are. If you're adult enough, you wouldn't let such antics bother you. Not disagreeing with your statement with respect to getting to actual responses, just telling you to learn how to deal with situations you cannot control. No point getting aggravated or complaining or again adding to the junk responses just so the rest of us have to read your whinging and crying about the previous wasted apace. You didn't do any different by putting two responses to that useless subject. NEXT!

Only a fool thinks they know me.

Or.....just like all trolls, if you lighten up and stop feeding them with long "Stop it" posts, they go away.

Plus, on most phones and laptops, the average user can scroll past these comments pretty fast, much faster than the time it takes to rant against them.

Haha we've had this running since it went live... :-P

Had no problems downloading and getting it up and running in Cape Town. :)

Has worked perfectly on iOS and Android since day 1. I'm not sure why there was this "restriction".

Oh well, for everybody else, join the party. :)

Mmm...CB10! Just the tip, though!

BlackBerry weapon of choice.

I am wondering how to share files (Documents) in a group, they write: "Keep your group in the loop – BBM Groups lets you invite up to 30 friends to chat together and goes a step further by allowing Groups to share photos, files and calendars. "

But when I am within a group I only can send pictures, no other files! Do anyone has a hint, or is it not possible? Sharing files in a group is a must have and a unique factor! Perfect for project planing besides the lists and calendar features within a group!

My bbm is having issues, I can message people with a BlackBerry with no issues ppl on other platforms it's not going thru just the evil X but they can message me and I get their updates, restart battery pull none will help...I think my phone sees cross platforming as treason

If you are running bbm channel beta, this may be the problem, try updating bbm channels. Or removing channels.

Posted via CB10

Not running bbm channels at all

Did they get the updated version? I know apple had an update yesterday.

Posted via CB10

Even android people I can't reach but they are messaging me. Help!!! Anyone I seem alone here

My mates in Joburg downloaded it a while ago....anyways enjoy everyone:)

What ever happened to this been a Samsung exclusive for a few months?

Posted via CB10

I guess the exclusive was for a shorter period. The press release suggests it was rolled out first for Samsung galaxy owners.

Hopefully we see more of this and the user base just keeps growing.

It was always working in Cape Town when it was officially release :D

z10 rocks

That's cool bring another 10 million now, go blackberry go to the top

Posted via CB10

Now everyone in Africa can buy a cheap android phone....

Posted via CB10

Not so fast . They won't be compatible to BBM. You have to have android 4.1 at least, I think.

Posted via CB10

huzzah, they've been psyched, now everyone at least has to buy mid tier devices (hopefully this is incentive for Q5 sales?)

Now that's great!!!

Dev. of "Data Usage Counter", "Alarm+", "Recycle Bin" for BB10

Is BBM still going to come preloaded onto Samsung devices now? They mentioned that before the first BBM release.

Posted via CB10

We've had this since day 1 in Africa, but according to the BBM Africa site, only for Samsung phones downloadable via the Samsung appstore....

We got it since yesterday! Lot of people are on it here in ivory Coast :)

Thank you craberry team. I was waiting for this info. its really user friendly and smooth

On ios7 can you adjust the text size for BBM. A friend who is 49 can't read the current size. Man those iphones are small screened when the keypad comes up, especially if you are over 40. What he really needs is the z30! If not hopefully BBM puts this in for iPhone users.

Trolls should be forced to use BB10!

BBM is now available on "Google Play Store", it was available on the Samsung app store since the global release...

Yay!! To OS 10.2 roll out in South Africa!!

BbmUserCount += 20,000,000 today

jojo beaconsfield

They keep saying 10 million in the first 24 hrs.why don't they say ,as well, how many they have to date.People want to know.

15m mark has now been crossed and its only just day 4. its a marathon, not a sprint

You see america, thats how you behave when you get something last. No bad press, no whining, no crying like a baby, no spoilt brat attitude, no doom and gloom, no hate. Take some notes. O ja, we getting the Z30 last too.
Notice how the BB bashing slowed down to a trickle this week.

Nah, BBM has been available to download from 21st October...that press release is just a formality

This press is late. They had it downloaded in Africa from the first day of release.

Posted via CB10

I'm in Botswana but I'm not going to download this! Posted via Z10 :)

This is actually not accurate, I had contacts from Africa on my BBM day 1 of iOS and Android. Although some got it from the sumsung app portal and some couldn't find it at all but my guess was they were using older handsets

Posted via CB10

No it wasn't. Been trying to load it on my iPad was only available today. There was a work around if you changed your App Store region to US. But I wasn't in a rush, have had BBM since the curve days.

percy franklin 360

Bbm for android and ios has been available here in Nigeria from the first day. Persuaded so many of my friends to download it,sadly I suffered a lil backslash when they were placed on the waiting list.

From my awesome Z30

On board Africa... Plenty of love from the US. Is this all countries in Africa or just some few? BBM is the best you will love it, enjoy!!!

Let's not call it the best just yet. App crashing is still happening for a lot of people. The compression when you send pics is HORRIBLE. It makes me feel like I'm using a curve 8300 era. The quality is really bad. They need to bring back the option that was there on bb 7 devices to choose the quality you want to send.

You can't send videos which sucks.

When they add video chatting and wifi calling, and fix those issues, they can then be called the best. Video chatting should be at the top of the new features list

Nice one am happy to be path of You guys.
