BBM for Android and iOS has launched!

By Adam Zeis on 21 Oct 2013 12:34 pm EDT

Exactly a month after it was originally supposed to be available, BlackBerry has given word that BBM for Android and iOS will FINALLY be launching today, over the next few hours. You can hit up Google Play and the App Store and will be able to download BBM as it becomes available in your region. The only catch here is that you may not actually be able to use the app just yet if you haven't signed up at Check out the details below.

BBM Roll Out Details:

  1. Download BBM – the easiest way is to visit from your Android or iPhone browser*
  2. Once you install the app, open it, and enter your email address to hold your spot in line
  3. We will email you as soon as you reach the front of the line and can start using BBM

If you are among the millions that took the time to sign up at, you can start using BBM immediately without waiting in line.* If you didn’t sign up in advance, don’t worry – we are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible.

Our team of developers and engineers has been working around the clock to bring you BBM – and make some upgrades while we’re at it – and some incredible work has been done. I look forward to sharing more of this with you here, on Inside BlackBerry, soon.

For updates on how quickly the line is moving you can follow @BBM on Twitter. I will be back tomorrow with another post to provide you with an update on the line-up and to share more detail about the work the team has done over the last several weeks.

Lastly, thank you for your patience. We know you’re excited (we are too!) and we look forward to having you join us on BBM.

BBM for Android and iOS has launched!

Oddly enough the leafs is the nhl's most valuable team. They generate revenue much more than the other teams even though if they suck. Being in toronto, canadas most populated city in the most populated province, people have no choice but to support their hometown team

They've already been going on.

WhatApp vs Viber vs LINE vs WeChat vs KakaoChat vs Kik, vs Google Hangouts vs Facebook Messenger...

BBM is late in the game. Actually BBM isn't there yet apparently. I want to tell my friends to install it but I don't want them to install it, be unable to use it, uninstall it and refuse to try again later. So I guess I'll wait another week or so before bugging them to do it.

I've definitely had to fight the urge to tell everyone about it. Downloading the app and waiting again is the same as not downloading and waiting. Better they know about it when it's available to download and use right away.

It's not in this release. It's planned for later versions along with BBM voice, etc

Posted via a Verizon Z10 running a leak and CB10. My channel: C0004F9BB

He means will people on iOS and Android be able to BBM you if you have channels installed.
I hope so, that was a problem before.

You're right I misunderstood- I thought he was asking if those users would be able to install/use Channels. My apologies!

This is good news ... but ... BB must capitalize on BBM by making it a profitable entity.

BB had not done well on Playbook and Z10 write-offs, and marketing in general.
If marketing is not done well, BBM will become just another communication tool.

Field of Dreams: "build it and they will come" does not necessarily mean BBM will be successful.

All that it does NOT need is one system downtime failure to make it sink.

Will "we will email you as soon as you reach the front of the line and can start using BBM" have any similarity to the US heath care website that does not work as planned?
I hope not.

Disclaimer: Our family has three BB phones. We only use BBM, not text messaging, for our own communication.

YES! There are advertised BBM apps for iPhone's (App Store) and Google Android's (Google Play)

Yes! There is an un-advertised BBM app for Blackberry phones! (Pre-loaded on BB phones) - now how did Blackberry get the phone guys to do that?

IMO: Avoid having to load the BBM app onto iPhone and Android phones. Just purchase a genuine Blackberry phone with BBM pre-loaded.

I use to use the iPhone... once I tried the Z10 for a couple of weeks I was surprised at how much faster I get things done. It was so much more productive that now my iPhone just sits on my desk. I will be upgrading to the Z30 as soon as I can!!!

I hope whoever buys BlackBerry in November is prepared for a huge drop in legacy devices sales. Here I go Xperia Z1, goodbye forever Z10!

Posted via CB10

I have to wonder how pronounced the impact of that trend will be, and whether it will be balanced by a potential boost in reputation for BB in general resulting from a (theoretical and hopeful) positive experience on BBM for non-BB users? In other words, will this hurt handset sales as you propose, or end up helping after all?

Cool, can't wait...I just don't like how use channels beta users can't talk to iPhone and Android users. .at least that how it was with the initial release.

Posted via CB10

I think they probably had the beta testers using a beta database because it needed different tables etc. People who signed into the production tables using iOS didn't have their information in the beta databases so communications form beta testers to these people could not happen.

Just like in avatar:"the last airbender" or "the legend of korra" there must be balance for everything in the world. Light/dark. Competition will be one of those balances..

No. I'm still using whatsapp to communicate with users that use symbian, wp, and android below 4.0 OS.

Correct me if I'm wrong but according to the BBM blog, users who didn't sign up for updates can download it, but they have to wait for an email for it to be activated.

Understandable, but weird. And kind of risky. Hopefully it goes well.

I was thinking that too but if you believe the rampant issues created by the leak the last time 'round it's a fairly easy work around (if not time and staff intensive) to basically confirm it's the correct app, assign a PIN as necesary and then whitelist it.. That's my initial thoughts on it at least.

Considering BlackBerry's poor track record on execution (taking 29 days to fix this mess), I can't see this going well. There should be a lot of frustrated people come this evening who haven't recieved their activation email.

I think it will take a couple of days for the roll out to complete. People will need to be patient.

Actually reading the official news better it will take at least three days:
"*Samsung customers in Sub-Sahara Africa can download BBM today from the Samsung Apps store. iPhone and other Android users in Africa will be able to download the app in three days’ time."

Unless I'm misreading it, that exclusivity applies only to Africa. Sub-Saharan African Samsung customers can download it today, the remaining African users will be able to download in 3 days so agreed, it will take 3 days if you are a non Samsung customer in Africa but unless that is worded in an unbelievably horrible way, I'm inclined to believe that the roll out for non-African customers will start at some point this afternoon/evening

Africa is a big continent I just asked over voice control on my Q10 what's the population of Africa and my Siri wannabe told me 1.1 bilion people.

You could pass as a racist for what you wrote.

I don't recall stating anything about the size of Africa but yes, it is a rather large continent. As for my comment being racist (sorry, passing for racist.. wouldn't want to be accused of making a personal attack) I'm not entirely sure how restating the disclaimer that BBRY put at the bottom of their announcement passes for racist. The way the disclaimer is worded states that users in Sub-Saharan Africa who are using a Samsung device will have access to BBM today while Android users who are not using a Samsung device and iOS users in the balance of Africa will have to wait 3 days. How is that the least bit racist?

Are you suggesting that my classifying anyone who is not residing in (or at very least operating a wireless device on a network based in) Africa as non-African is somehow racist?

Ignore him, mate. That wasn't racist. Some people are too touchy about the race issue (usually upper-middle class white people hehe [yes, THAT is racist, though not really since I'm in that demographic]).

It was racist for him to imply that Africa consists of only one race. Our continent isn't monochrome! For instance, Durban (city in South Africa) has the largest concentration of Indians outside of India...good going on suggesting they don't exist, Dave79!

haha, I'm just busting balls. I like it here. :-) Racism isn't really a huge thing here.

Thanks Birdman.. I've got many family members who have dealt with far too much racism in their lives. It's kind of a touchy subject and not something I take lightly.

This will be interesting... I guess I won't get much work done this afternoon...

I'm completely hooked on checking the status of everything bb every 5 mins.

Blackberry should have put up a site "New BBM users" and had a bigger counter that went up with every new BBM account!

Posted via CB10

That wouldve been good for advertisng, But BlackBerrys been slacking on that. Probably because of money issues

I hope Google cleaned out the fake BBM garbage so there is no confusion this time. I am looking forward to a successful release.

Those have been there for the past few weeks, except for the one that has the official BBM logo for it's app, that's been there recently.

Your right, I just looked on my wifes' GNote and there is one in there from a DEV called orange or something. I think I will have her wait for about 24hrs and see. I can't wait until the Z30 drops. Then I can upgrade and she can come on home to team BBRY

and now i have to watch half my friends run off to iphone just for bbm yay >_< still its a good thing tho more contacts lol

For once the "marketing guy" words were true... finally!
Now BBM needs TONS of downloads, and BlackBerry please start already to add the missing features missing on the other platforms.. voice first of all and after that get BBM channel out of beta!!
Lastly.. windows phone everyone? BBM needs to truly be multiplatform..

Posted via CB10

It needs tons of downloads AND consistent usage. So many apps are downloaded by a lot of users and then not used at all. Just as example, Facebook, Google + and Twitter all have waaaaaaaay more users than the number that are actively using the services. I'm afraid this will be one of those things where we see a huge download number at the beginning but over time, usage faints because a lot of people were downloading just see how it works or the hassle of trying to get others to download and use it consistently isn't worth it. I mean at the end of the day, this, google hangouts, whatsapp, etc... are only as valuable to us if our friends are using them too.

So, if I sideload the Android version on my Z10 and sign up with a different BBM ID... can I BBM myself?

I would wait until everything is settled before trying it though. Make sure all that needs get access before we mess around too much lol.

Posted via BlackBerry Love on CB10

I would actually like to know this, having to BBM IDs would actually be something I want. One for work and one for personal.

So, no release for WP8? I guess my "love" for Blackberry just keeps growing every day /sarcasm. I sincerely hope they get absorbed and send to oblivion by Lenovo.

Too little, too late. Nobody wants anything from thia dying company. They're going to screw it up, just watch.

BlackBerry is dead! My S4 is way bette r than your Flopberry 10!

and you are here why .... you s4 is not that much better then anything even an s3 samsung aka the new apple >_<

Lol!! Goes to show how smart he is..........oh wait a minute, he probably thinks he is on another forum.

Well clearly your keyboard sucks, either that or your not smart enough to spell....

Sent from the future on my Z10.

Not only does his spelling, grammer and keyboard suck but his attitude as well. I bet your in the line up for bbm already lol, why else would you be here.

Posted from my incredible Z10

You know I'm not one to lose it cool easily but he is the most annoying obnoxious poster on this site. Every time I see his post I just know it's crap

Posted via BlackBerry Love on CB10

This is crap.. Why should people have to wait for the download. Once again rim can't seems to get it right

Posted via CB10

so its BlackBerry now and has been for quite some time so get it right! ALSO, it says right in the post, for the 6 million plus that signed up on the website, they can use it right away, everyone else can download the app, create a BBID, and then BlackBerry will notify you when your BBID is live.

not quite sure where you read you have to wait for the download, but again, keep hating, oh and when BBM adds 10 million users over the next few days, come back and try to negatively spin that.

If 6 million signed up, I think you have the reason for the delay right there. All the other messaging applications started from nothing and scaled as they went. I wonder if BB simply underestimated the demand and had to scale up the server and management capacity?

This is good news lets hope that it is stable.... I am about to send messages to my Iphone friends and make them install this.

Simply the unbelievers...Lol!! Maybe you should bet your house and see if you are right this time. :)

I don't have android or iPhone (why do i.need one when the z10 kicks ass) but I'm soo excited for this.. come on bbm

Posted via CB10

Awesome news, but anyone found a way to download it? Tried on co-worker's S4 and iPhone, no luck. Way to announce something that isn't quite working!

Uuuummmmm......."You can hit up Google Play and the App Store and will be able to download BBM as it becomes available in your region"

I see BlackBerry Messenger in the Google play store and it got released today.

I question it though as its released by orange blues solutions

What gives?? Another duplicate?

Sorry, it will not install on an iPod touch or a Wi-Fi only iPad. I downloaded the app using iTunes and got an error message when I tried to transfer the app to both my iPod Touch and Wi-Fi only iPad mini, the message saying that it is not compatible.

I checked this at the iTunes store and it would appear that the cellular versions of the iPad can be used, but not the Wi-Fi only versions.

I'm not even telling any of my Android or iOS friends. Once bitten, twice shy - and I got bitten pretty hard the first time. I'll let them tell ME about it instead.

Yes, wow.
But why such an unclear installation procedure?
There seems to be no download link for iOS nor Android on
Confused......what to tell my Apple & Android friends? I'm afraid of running into another embarrassement.

Quote from the announcement:

Download BBM – the easiest way is to visit from your Android or iPhone browser*

As much as I would live to see that, I highly doubt BlackBerry will be able to make that happen. Definitely not for free anyway. I would have rather waited even longer for the cross platform app just to have it launch with bbm video. Seriously don't think we will ever see that.

Posted via CB10

Oh, oh, Guess what day it is? Guess what day it is? CrackBerry ! Come on I know you hear me! Mike, mike, mike, mike. *camel laughs* woot woot!

On The Underrated Never Duplicated Z10

Can you provide de link for the official BBM App inside de Google Play store?

Or they took out all the fake Apps?!

This is very important to share with all.

Thanks, this are great news!!

I'm MongezaurioBerry

I went there on my Android phone and I don't see any way to download it. Guess it's not out in the US yet?

funny tho... BBM cross platform, but only Z30 can enjoy Flipboard from his own home BBW. Exactly there is someone in BlackBerry need additional brain.

With the attrition of the workforce, BlackBerry can only do so many things at any given time. Patience.

Spam your friends with it like I just did!
Brace yourselves for that red blinking light will be going non-stop!

PLEASE NO ONE PASS AROUND YOUR DUMB A$$ LEAKS!!!!!!!!! I get it your cool and a rebel, you're above the law, you know someone how knows someone who knows NOTHING!!! Wait and let the official apps go out!

Posted via CB10

How many potential leakers do you think you've dissuaded with your post?

yay this brings me great joy

well good think i just traded my iphone for a z10 since i had no other friends on apple comming back to berry made sence for the BBM. No im kidding i was doen with my iphoen phase.

but seriously berry should chage for the download if there are that many people waiting and wanting thats a lots of potential money. I say 10 bucks for ios (just becasue) and less for android becasue i have oh so enjoyed sidloading your apps

Go to your phone/device browser and type "" and follow the instructions. Goodluck!! I have successfully done that in Canada on my apple device. :)

Depends when we can use it, i switched over from blackberry to Iphone 5S so i did not sign up, meaning i can download but will have to wait .... oh well at least i have all the apps :p ( just kidding )

Do you know how to read? If so read the WHOLE article not just the headlines. It's coming out in waves. I'm guessing is so that servers don't get overwhelmed.

They did already. Singapore got it last week. Is now in the hands of carriers. BlackBerry really should start doing ota releases straight to consumers though.

Hell no! iOS7 update was hell for technical support. Specially since most users will blame carriers for something we don't control. I may not love Apple but seriously their after sales support is second to none. We don't even have BlackBerry's support number. The one we have is only for PlayBook support.

That's brutal !!!
But it goes back to what I've been saying for last two months. EVERYTHING BlackBerry does right now needs to be based around marketing. Every single move they make. And what you've said should definitely be addressed as a marketing (ie word of mouth) issue...... if not simple basic customer service!

Checked the Android Play store and ITunes but don't see it anywhere. Tried going directly to on both browsers and it's a no go as well

I'm pretty sure i can read and write better than the most educated person in your family so i suggest you pick your words wisely before coming at me with such nonsense.
