After only a few hours into the initial release, BBM had made its way into the top charts for the Google Play store. It already has a great start for iOS users as well so it's great to see that it's fired up Android users too. As of now BBM is riding high in Google Play with downloads in the 10,000,000 - 50,000,000 range, putting it in the number one position for new releases! That's fantastic!

We knew immediately after the original (botched) launch that BBM would be a hit on other platforms as Google Trends show it was hugely popular. The proof is there now and we can see that BBM is taking off on both iOS and Android and we can hope that it continues to see even more traction as updates roll out to bring more features like BBM Video and BBM Channels.

BBM heads to the top of Google Play

Do note that it's the Top *NEW* Free listing. It is 7th in the Top Free listing, which is pretty sweet too.

What is this Bitstrips noise? Heh.

If the app is deleted, it'll also be deleted from installed numbers list. So, > 10 mln is pretty solid ones which are present on devices.

Everyone that has joined Bbm are up and running and they have no complaints to the degree they ate going to delete. In fact most ate quite impressed. All my friends now are on BBM and that is going to stay.

Trolls should be forced to use BB10!

Please note that these download numbers are not real time. Think they are 2 days behind... so the number could be actually way bigger :)

"Free' is free. "Use" is another matter.

Financial "profit" for Blackberry is critical.

Maybe successful business for BBM will bring BB (the company) out of the UN-interesting.

Yes most new apps do top but they don't hold it for long. We will see how long it stays at the #1 spot.

Most new very sought after, name brand apps may make it to #1 downloaded status. I'm sure that each new Angry Birds or Facebook release does. But that different than most "new" apps overall. The vast majority of apps get zero notice from most users & only get a handful of downloads. Having BBM in the tens of millions of downloads range puts them up there with the premier apps.

Keith H. Posted using CB10.

Ummm... no it isn't. This is a huge number of downloads by any standards. Indeed I would be surprised if it weren't the most successful launch of any messaging app in history.

Posted via CB10

And again we see the stupidity that flows on cb really new releases normally top the charts do u guys hear yall selves

Posted by z10 boss

There are probably dozens of new releases per day. Do you really believe every brand new flashlight or fart app hits the #1 spot & is downloaded by tens of millions of using in it's first few days?

Keith H. Posted using CB10.

Really, 10,000,000-50,000,000 downloads in the first couple days is standard? Those Android developers have it pretty nice. All they have to do is release a new app to get over 10 million downloads....

Posted via my Z10

Yes, we hear all selves? Really? Anyway, it turned out to be a surprise to everyone that didn't expect it so good on blackberry!

Posted via CB10

it is the most downloaded app in history during the first 24 hours of launch..the previous leading one was Angry Birds with some 3 million downloads in the first 24 hours (IOS and Android combined)

Ultimately it matters only if it catches up to and surpasses whatsapp or not. (i hope it does)

Posted with my Q10

Whatsup is not the competition. It's a standard texting app with little room for growth. It's done.

Posted via CB10

It only matters to the people that continually compare. Why can't people just accept that 10 Million downloads in the first couple days is a huge number and good for BlackBerry. Despite all the negative crap hovering over the company the last year, this is a GOOD thing. End of discussion. The truth is, people will always complain and find something wrong. No matter how good it is.

Not approved by the NSA. My personal Q10

You're delusional. Do you know how many Windows Phone, Symbian, Asha, etc, users there are whom are using WhatsApp? Do you honestly think they'll just throw away their phones and get Android or iPhones just for BBM (yes, I'm not mentioning Blackberry phones).

Exactamente, and there's Open Whatsapp so folks on more platforms than you mentioned also using WA, aka they're killing it! And will continue for some time. Plus it's simple, no PIN to know or find out-- you can know which of your friends are on the app and start using it right away, that was probably the game changer.

Z10, unlocked, BNIB FS. Also $15 Blackberry Unlocks $35 Worldwide Q10/Z10 Unlocks available! (and much more)

More importantly, is 10m - 50m a standard range used for this activity? Understanding the author is not the source of the info, that's not very informative considering the 10 million mark was mentioned days ago.

10 million mark was Android and IOS combined. As far as I understand this, it's Android alone we're talking about here.

Posted via CB10

Hell yeah.. back to back, belly to belly.. the good thing is that we are the only ones with BBM voice and BBM chat.. BBM rules!

Posted via CB10

Good thing that we have it, but I hope full capabilities cross platform is achieved quickly. The video calls BlackBerry to BlackBerry leave much to be desired in terms of overall reliability in my experience.

Posted via CB10

You can't be serious! I have spent the last day video chatting with my daughter who was put in hospital 22 hrs away. It was like I was in the room with her!

You want share a taste of the sweet stuff (Voice, Video and Channels) and BlackBerry should then monetize those features once people are hooked. :)

I agree. Wait a few months and let BBM be the norm for people before giving them Voice and Video. Give it to them cheap ($0.99) or something. But make sure you charge something for the services.

Not approved by the NSA. My personal Q10

The question is, and I think it's the biggest question, will it be too late by the time they roll those features out to the cross-platform folks? I don't see enough in the Android BBM version right now to keep people around waiting for the updates, especially with BBRY's battered rep now.

In fact, as someone who used a BB for 7 years until May, and loved using BBM, I'm rather underwhelmed with the Android version.

I'm just getting flashbacks to PlayBook's rollout. Half-baked and soon forgotten. If they let a good chunk of those who d/l the app this week uninstall, I don't think they'll get them back. They need to get the additional features out there yesterday.

And you know this how?

Almost all of my non BlackBerry friends now use BBM exclusively for messaging and are thrilled to have it cross platform. I suspect they are not unusual

Posted via CB10

Agreed. My wife and daughter both didn't care about BBM, and now that's the main messenger app they use. Android and iPhone. Works great too.

Posted via CB10

The main messenger app they use...for the past 5- 6 days.

I don't think that sort of short term info necessarily eliminates the possibility it's curiosity on a larger scale.

BBM will be at that by the end of October! BBM rules nothing compares people will see that! BlackBerry users will continue to promote it and old users will too. The momentum is gaining, no wait lists now and video/calls coming by the end of 2013 i am just getting more and more excited! Keep improving and updating though so bbm can stay on top!

Posted via CB10 (My amazing Q10)

N4bb says 45 million android and iPhone users.. so over 100 million bbm users..

Posted via CB10

I'm hearing that share price hasn't been affected much though?

Kind Regards, Tino Chiko C0008DDD1 TechCraze!

Given that facebook, twitter and Google are also free, one can only gape at those who don't see how this is huge business news for bb

Posted via CB10

BlackBerry should have made this move in 2010-2011 and they would have kept some market share. It's not too late as we see now, BlackBerry is still loved.. hoping too see future products COMPETING specs to specs hardware wise with Samsung and iPhone.... that's the only path for their comeback. Peace out

Posted via CB10

I agree with you on that. BlackBerry should have done this shortly after the iPhone was unveiled. But even after all this time, it's evident that people still care about BBM. Cross-platform BBM is BlackBerry's last chance of being relevant in the technology world and it's a critical mission in which they can't afford to fail.

Posted via CB10

QNX is highly relevant in the tech world. However, it remains to be seen if it will maintain a presence in the cell phone world. As far as real time operating systems go, QNX is the go to technology.

Oh I know that QNX is still relevant. I agree with you there. I was referring to the survival of BlackBerry as a tech company if that makes sense.

Posted via CB10

I assume you are just talking consumer device right because in the enterprise, it is the standard and it is only getting better. People get so caught up on device sales they completely forget about the enterprise software and the 25,000+ installations. that's a big deal. Also only one to have US and Canadian government certification, Nato, etc.(talking enterprise remember not devices and FIPS). BlackBerry isn't going anywhere and once channels, voice, and screen share are added cross platform and they start making ad money while keeping it free to the customer, BAM, money in the bank.

That all being said, with BlackBerry probably going private, no one will hear the success or profits. I hate to see the layoffs but getting headcount and MFG down 50% is going to save them tons of money. They already purchased back the stock from carriers, they are being smarter about MFG, decreasing device count, it won't be long before BlackBerry see's profit.

I think that once BlackBerry is private the company will share their successes and (hopefully) control the media.

Posted via CB10

That's good news. It's nice that the last couple weeks has been good news. Go BlackBerry!!!

Posted via Jiggy's Z10

I believe BlackBerry has mentioned that they are currently working on a Windows phone version. But I could be wrong. I hope not.

Posted via CB10

Is this good for BlackBerry though may mean that people who have migrated away from blackberry start using it again but can blackberry generate revenue from BBM on other devices?

Posted via CB10

I think they should just put in a donate option to start. See the response they get, but not till its been out for awhile and has full features

Zed10

Look at facebook, Google, twitter etc... of course they can generate revenue. wait till Channels goes live

Posted via CB10

Yup. The plan is to generate revenue through advertisements just like Facebook and all the other popular free media platforms.

Posted via CB10

my sister and brother in law just got BB< on their iPhones, used it for three days, and switched to Z10's... I know this isn't the norm by any means but I don't think it is that bad, it might actually make people who haven't seen a new BB10 device check it out before running their mouths about how their device is way better... spoiler alert, its not.

I haven't had one person tell me or give me a good reason as to why their device is better... until we talk about instagram.

Instagram doesn't make the device better, it makes the developer support better, equally because of maturity of the platform as anything else.

Posted via CB10

So ya,,,is there any ETA of these updates? I not really sure if I want to know though because they can't seem to keep their deadlines.

Zed10

Before the end of 2013 video and calls will be functional for ios and android then windows phone and desktop bbm etc should be launched along with new features including bbm money! There is a grand future for BlackBerry i believe and so should you!

Posted via CB10 (My amazing Q10)

Nice that would be awesome! Before Christmas for sure cause that when everyone will get together and exchange pins.

Never heard of BBM though, I have to check it out. Got a link?

Zed10

I'm on vacations and haven't honestly checked crackberry as much as I used to which was basically every 40 minutes but I gotta admit that sometimes I just don't believe this is all really happening! I mean on the podcast Kevin spoke of how he was in disbelief to see some users he never thought of seeing showing their pin off.. in my case I'm surrounded by BlackBerry haters /troll but hardcores! And what really annoys me is that most of them don't even know BlackBerry 10 is nor even that is different than the Previous OS's... that being said all my social networks are now showing pins all over the place! And even people that initially posted a photo hating on BBM have now delete it and posted their new bbm!! Is like iPhone fans they don't care they can get a phone to do what their platform does for them a lot cheaper in lots of places but as long as people keep saying apple rocks and that hype continues they will keep selling millions and millions! Same is happening with BBM! A lot of people just getting it for the hype really hope the trend continues!!

Posted via CB10

It will be difficult to win back users from whatsapp though.people are so used to it now that they might feel leaving a comfort zone.

Posted via CB10

I am digging this. I also went to BBM.com and used their invitation option to send out invites to my business associates and friends. I hope that it becomes the norm in communication.

BBM is free and so are some other apps with similar functionality. The WILL monetize it. Eg twitter is valued at almost $50 per Each User!!!!

Posted via CB10

After that..
1. Update BBM immediately Voice,Video,BBM Channel, add many features etc.!
2. START MARKETING ON BBM and TELL TO ALL ANDROID/IOS USERS HOW AWESOME THE NEW BLACKBERRY 10 IS, ALL FEATURES ABOUT NEW 10.2 ETC.! ASAP :)

Whatts app has a distinct advantage because it connects people secretly without their permission. How long will it take an individual to get 100 whatts app contacts versus 100 BBM contacts?
Personally I prefer BBM but how long will it take whatts app users to replace their network of friends or will they grow frustrated and give up.

Posted via CB10

It would be so dope to use BBM video with my friends on other networks. I hope this rolls out fast and clean.

Posted with my Q10

Since the launch is so great...
Now BlackBerry team need to work hard & bring next update for ios & android ASAP...
I mean for voice & video call

We know many of us succeed attract their friend & people surrounding.
They did download it but people keeps on asking... what's the differences with whatsap...
And I'm happy to explain to my friend over & over again, but it seems like they keeps on went back to whatsap

The D&R sign, the powerful 'PING', the discreet BBpin, the customized picture & status, the broadcast message.... these are our pride... but they (ios & android) seems like not care much

So... let give them the 'ride' of BBM by bringing what whatsap don't have.

(don't mind my broken english... importantly, the message is understandable)

I asked my daughter to download it and try it on her HTC One Android device. She did and soon after deleted it. Her reason: "Dad it works too well. People can see when your message was delivered and also when read. They can even see if you are actively responding. Way too much control and visibility. " The irony..LoL

My daughter has a red Q5 and the kids at her school were asking why she go one. Now BBM is cross platform they now know why. One said after dropping her Samsung phone and cracking the screen, I love BBM and wish she had bought a BlackBerry. My daughter has dropped her Q many times and she says it's unbreakable. Love it! Welcome to all the Android users.

All news despite the negative responses in this thread! CONGRATULATIONS BBMFORALL!

Posted via the best Keyboard in Existence my Mo Fo Z10

I really hate when comments go so stupidly down the same path of the pseudo analysis.

This is good news.
It is not bad news.

So hurray for BlackBerry and BBM!!!!

Posted via CB10

Does anyone know what BlackBerry's internal projections were for BBM uptake? Methinks they were surprised by the numbers...

Posted via CB10

Deleted sucksapp as soon as BBM go cross platform. Made all my friend that want to keep in touch get BBM. If not standard msg. #BBRY4ever

Posted via CB10

I have not used BBM Channels yet so this might be a stupid comment. Because BBM doesn't run over the internet - it goes through their own network - could it be used to stream/deliver media in a faster more predictable way than netflix over the internet? I understand that netflix is moving into content creation which is good but their delivery is internet limited - especially outside the US. If BBM could provision their network capacity to to support massive media streaming (or even downloads - as wifi and LTE get faster) they might have a monetizing opportunity.

Posted via CB10

Happy to see the app gaining traction. Convincing friends to download and they seem to love it.

Posted via Q10

I think facebook has been hacked by Blackberry..
adults behaving like lil kids.. showing bbm pins like newly gifted toy..

Don't v already hv enough..??

Whatsapp, wechat, line, kik, cubie, not to forget normal txt msgs, facebook chat, yahoo n google services too..

Bbm in Android and iPhone is free but is chargeable to
blackberry phone users,
It's like wife charging husband for sex, and giving free sex to the
city.

I don't pay extra for it in Canada on Telus. It depends on what plan you get. They have a plan called BlackBerry social or something like that, where you get free BBM, facebook and twitter for like 15$.

Zed10

Paying extra for BIS is all network determined now. I'm with Rogers in Canada and it's free.. well nothing in life is free but you get the message lol

I am a WP 8 user and now planning to buy to BB 10 device as well (Z30). Earlier i used BB Pearl as well I used all Mobile OS except iOS. Just have few points after my initial current assessment on BB and how can BB bring back users again. In my view the best and proven path is to make android/ios/wp8 users acquainted with bb services like bbm now and by adding more and more functionality into bbm and outpacing whatsapp and all related apps, providing best user interface, functionality, faster release cycle with new functions and aiming wp8 as well. if possible release bbm for other lesser known OS for feature phones. Plan to include BB Hub functionality into BBM or as new app to let users get more and more functionality of Hub, any other services which BB think can be made cross platform try to plan for new app and release them. Simultaneously plan for new unique functionality to include in BB OS, great HW at 4.3 inch and 5 Inch size with great battery life also a cheaper device for emerging countries with huge population like India, China, Brazil, Russia, APAC etc but with good speed (processor) and battery life. Another point if BB wants to be acquired by some one i think MS is the right company as the services can be made available to both OS and compliment each other like Skype, Skydrive, XBox, BB Hub, BBM, Office etc. also without ditching any of the OS (WP8 & BB 10) and HW (Nokia, Surface, BB Z10, Z30) all can co exist with dual boot or different devices with all services. In my view Apple got into this situation primarily for iTunes / iPod and the way people got used to those before the lunch of iPhone apart from obliviously great HW but i still believe BB can make a great comeback with right strategy and planning, tie up with Google, SAP, Cisco, Lenovo, Samsung will not work well as per my view...I installed BBM in my wife's Android and waiting for my BB Z30 to kick start...Invited several of my family and friends to join BBM...All the best BB for BBM adoption...Sid

Can anyone just give BB their moment of a fuc king WIN?

It's a great app and BBM rules!

BB rules

They really should integrate BlackBerry keyboard into BBM for iOS and Android phones. That will be a great way to change people's minds about BlackBerry.

Posted via CB10

This is awesome in such a short time! BlackBerry seems to be staying on top of things with BBM so keep it up BlackBerry!!!

My BBM contact list has swelled!! In hindsight, this should've been done 2 years ago. Let's hope it stays strong :)

Posted via CB10

What's app for listed number 1 for long, BBM will be listed as number 1 until something something match or compete BBM.

Posted via CB10

My bbm contact have gone up quite a bit and now i am Skype and whatsapp no more. Both are deleted off my Z10.

Posted using my awesome BBZ10

Whats that? Gone fer good. Adios WA..my friends & especially Family is all on BbM.

Im impressed with the UI on both iOS and droid machines..had a chance to check both out - very very nice!

Its a hit.. for sure.. n its effecting wats app... though critics hav their own opinion.. n critics never appreciate thts y they r known as critics.. but people r liking it.. n my contact number is increasing...

Posted via CB10

Hard as this is to believe, all my messaging is Bbm. No more sms for me. My android and Apple buddies are on board.

Trolls should be forced to use BB10!

I think it will be the norm in communication because you can add ppl with NFC bar codes or just pin very quickly. And with Whatsapp a lot of ppl dont know what it is and you have to give out your number.

Posted via CB10

BlackBerry needs to produce a Windows Phone app. They also need to figure the video and voice functionality ASAP.

I'm glad to see people are downloading BBM. Unfortunately in my social circle, it doesn't have too many fans. For every FB friend who posts their new PIN, 10 people write a negative comment.

Posted via CB10

I've try to download for Nexus 7 4.1 but can not, but for Samsung Tab 7 4.1.2 is fine. I think will be need to upade Nexus 7 to 4.3.

I hope BlackBerry will also introduce screen sharing to Android and iOS. Anyone knows if this is feasible?
