Chat with Reggae star Maxi Priest on BBM Channels
This is not the first time we've seen a Reggae artist make use of BBM Channels Chat to talk to fans. Back in October 2013, when BBM Channels was still in beta, Gyptian used the platform to chat to fans using his BlackBerry Q10. This time around Reggae star Maxi Priest will be at the helm of the VP Records BBM Channels to chat to fans.
The BBM Channel Chat will allow fans to ask Maxi about his latest album release Easy To Love, his first record in over a decade. The Channel Chat will take place over of VP Records Official BBM Channel on Friday June 20th, 2014 at 4pm GMT (5pm CET/11am EST). If you want to chat be sure to follow the VP Records BBM Channel using PIN C0003E8B3.
However... I didn't use just the BlackBerry Z30. Getting clever, I paired up the Z30 to a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and took advantage of the microHDMI out port to connect to a bigger computer monitor. The experience was HEAVENLY. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fast two thumb typer on a BlackBerry qwerty keyboard - but give me a full computer keyboard and ten fingers to type with and I move into that 120+ words per minute range. And that's exactly what you need when trying to chat with dozens of people all at once.

I survived my first scheduled BBM Channel Chat... Barely!
Hoh. Lee. Shi. Te. I feel like the BBM team should give me a medal or something for surviving my first scheduled BBM Channel Chat. My frick'n thumbs hurt right now.
From the moment my BBM status automatically updated to "Available to Chat" I was typing non-stop as fast as I could trying to reply to everybody who was messaging me. And when the status automatically updated 30 minutes later to end my chat session, I spent the next 30 minutes typing replies to everybody I had yet not responded to. It was simply impossible to keep up with. I didn't count how many people were chatting with me, but it was a lot. When we do it again on Wednesday, I'll try and get somebody here to help me shoot some video of it, so you can get a perspective of what it looks like on my end.

Chat with CrackBerry Kevin on BBM Channels every Monday and Wednesday!
Earlier today on my BBM Channel, JT suggested that I turn on the "Chat Hours" of my BBM Channel so I could have regularly-occurring conversations with my subscribers. It was a great suggestion, so I'm wasting no time in doing it!
I've now set my Chat Hours schedule to begin on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 12:30pm Central Time (aka 1:30pm Eastern, aka 6:30pm GMT). I only set them to be live for thirty minutes for now, but I'm sure once we get going I'll keep typing until my thumbs develop blisters or somebody in our virtual office yells at me to get back to work.
As for what we'll chat about, well - that's up to YOU! I'd assume BlackBerry will be a topic of choice among many, but I'm well-versed in many subjects, including Formula 1, Gordon Lightfoot, Yoga Pants, The Art Of Picking Up Women (seriously, Miss CrackBerry is like an 11 while I'm maybe a 6.5) and much, much more... :p
Seriously though, I'm really looking forward to connecting with all of you on BBM Channels. This is exactly the kind of intimacy that sets BBM apart from other social platforms. If you have a question for me, this is your chance to ask it. I have no idea how easy or crazy this will be to manage, so I thank you in advance for your patience. I'll do my best to message everybody to messages me. Let's have some fun!
If you're not already subscribed to my channel, you can search for CrackBerry Kevin in BBM channels and find it that way, or add C00010BC5 or scan the barcode below. And if you're reading this and have yet to use BBM Channels, be sure to check out our guide on How To Use BBM Channels.

When a BBM channel crosses 1 million subscribers, this nerdery is what you get
The BBM Channel on BBM Channels (how meta is that?) has crossed the one million subscriber count. Now, you might have been expecting that when the million subscriber mark was crossed that the counter would merely tack on an extra digit and a comma.

Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg chats with fans over BBM Channels
Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Team Mercedes Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with some fans over BBM Channels — through a live chat on the Mercedes AMG Petronas official channel — and answered some burning questions.
If you hadn't noticed, we're fans of the BlackBerry sponsored Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team in these parts. Looks like we're not the only ones, too, as the team has delivered a special 'thank you' message to 100,000 subscribers to its BBM Channel.
The Channel's remarkable growth has seen a 150% increase in just 2014 alone – it sure doesn't hurt starting the new season with back-to-back wins! That and BBM Channels finally went cross-platform, so even Android and iOS toting fans can join in the fun.
It's great news to hear, and while we're sure most of you are already subscribed, you can do so using the QR code or PIN below if you're not!

CrackBerry Asks: Do you think we'll see a rise in big brands using BBM Channels now it's cross platform?
For us folk on team BlackBerry having BBM Channels isn't a new concept, but for our friends on iOS and Android it's still pretty fresh for them. We posted recently that the likes of Coke and the Olympic channels had seen a big increase in subscribers since Channels was introduced to iOS and Android in BBM 2.0 and that's great news. When BBM rolls out to Windows Phone and the forthcoming Nokia X range of phones it's only going to become more mainstream - I hope.

Coke and Olympics BBM Channels doubled subscribers after cross-platform release
CrackBerry caught up with BBM’s senior director of business development, David Proulx, at Mobile World Congress to talk about the week’s announcement surrounding BlackBerry. In addition to touching on the Nokia preload announcement made at MWC, Proulx mentioned that the growth in Channels usership following the Android and iOS release was impressive — 100% in the case of the official Olympics and Coke channels.
"We actually have seen, case in point, Olympics or Coke. When we launched BBM channels on iOS and Android we saw doubling of subscriber bases for a lot of the sort of channels that I think are broadly interesting, or from broad development."
Beyond Channels, we breezed over the BBM 2.0 for iOS and Android that also introduced voice, quick sharing, and friend-finding. There was Gingerbread support added for Android. He then mentioned the Nokia X and Windows Phone announcement, and this is where Proulx provided a bit more clarity on what’s going on. "Those Nokia announcements are significant because they're not just present on the platform. They're pre-load and co-marketing agreements."
A pre-load is a big deal, and signals BlackBerry’s continued willingness to collaborate with partners, even if they’re ostensibly competitors. One of the bigger complaints from iOS and Android users is that the user interface doesn’t match the platform standard, and as Windows Phone users are especially particular about their UI, Proulx admitted that “We're going to start to implement more of those native controls and design elements to make it feel more at home on the platform.”
The week’s news also involved WhatsApp, which was acquired by Facebook for a cool $16 billion. We’re all aware of WhatsApp’s humble beginnings as a BBM clone that happened to be cross-platform. BlackBerry’s CEO John Chen openly admitted that he would sell BBM for that amount, and Proulx was equally congratulatory. “They obviously got an unprecedented exit. The sheer value of that transaction is remarkable.” Proulx also said this bodes well for the sector BBM is participating in; there’s money to be made here, equally demonstrated by Rakuten’s acquisition of Viber, but the revenue stream here is still squarely in the realm of "potential".
“It's going to create some interesting opportunities in the market for the rest of us, inasmuch as there need to be counter-moves from everybody who's not Facebook and WhatsApp, whether you're a telco, whether you're another big consumer Internet player, whether you're one of the standalone mobile messaging platforms, in order to differentiate and stand apart.”
Proulx went on to say that the things BBM is going to be doing to make money are going to be different than what WhatsApp will need to do in order to justify Facebook’s massive purchase. BBM has been experimenting in enterprise with a custom-built messaging solution and on the consumer side with stickers. On stickers in particular, Proulx was excited because virtual goods are becoming a "core part of the communication experience".
Those are the broad strokes of our chat with Proulx on Channels and BBM. Is there anything you guys are still wondering about the Nokia partnership? How well are Channels doing, from what you've seen?

If you didn't catch the #CESlive show with our special guest Alex Kinsella from BlackBerry earlier, now is a good a time as any. Alex stopped by to give us all a first hand look at BBM 2.0 for Android and iOS and walk us through some of the great features that are coming with it.

CrackBerry Asks: Are you using BBM Channels?
Just a few weeks ago, BBM Channels left beta and was made available to the masses. It adds to the already great features of BBM by giving it a whole new social aspect and allowing for anyone to create their own specialty channel. With BBM Channels, users can create a channel for everything from brands to hobbies to personal stories. BBM Channels also lets you open up BBM chat with people who aren't contacts, letting you discover new friends or just chat with fans of your channel.

BBM Channels has legs (and sexy girls in yoga pants, too!)
This is the post where for the first time I publicly state that I'm GENUINELY EXCITED about BBM Channels. When first unveiled at BlackBerry Live, I admit I wasn't actually all that optimistic or enthusiastic about the new BBM feature. With other social platforms like twitter, instagram, facebook, tumblr, etc. so well established, could BBM Channels really differentiate itself in features? And even if they did build out a feature set that seemed worthwhile to Channel owners, would non-BBM Channel owners (just regular BBM users) take to following channels and participating with them?
After yet again spending some quality time in BBM Channels this weekend, the evidence is beginning to appear that Channels may just have more legs that I initially thought. A lot more. When it comes to the performance metrics of CrackBerry and all our Mobile Nations sites, I'm always clued in on a daily basis to where things are at. Somehow though, I managed to neglect to pay attention to our CrackBerry BBM Channel stats the past few weeks. With BBM Channels now out of beta, we shot up in subscribers from around 11,000 to over 60,000. Amazing! Of course, CrackBerry has an established audience and brand and is tied to BlackBerry, but it was still great to see this growth in such a short time. And the views, comments, and likes on a post by post basis are really quite impressive (see image above).

Thoughts following a hangout with the BBM team
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of hanging out with a bunch of the BlackBerry folks on the BBM team. I had a chance to express my (pretty strong) opinions, make suggestions and pick their collective brains on BBM topics of all kinds.
Just to make this clear, they didn’t reveal any big secrets, but I think I now have a good idea of what seems to be a priority to the team. Without being too specific, I’m pleased with the plans they seem to have in place for the next few months. I’m convinced they are not standing still, and we should see more upgrades before the end of the year.
