BBM Channels updated to v10.2.20.32 in the BlackBerry Beta Zone

By Bla1ze on 6 Sep 2013 04:26 pm EDT

It has only been a short while since the last BBM Channels update but a new release is now rolling out through the BlackBerry Beta Zone and through the BlackBerry Beta Zone app. This release sees BBM Channels jump up to v10.2.20.32 and it brings along with it a hefty change log, although some of the stuff changed will only be available on BlackBerry 10 devices. Here's a quick list of the changes.

Managing your channel has never been so straight-forward -
  • Upload pictures of all sizes (BlackBerry 10 Only, already available in BBOS): square photos hindering your posts? Now you will not need to crop or edit images before posting from the device!
  • Moderate Inappropriate Comments & Posts: channel owners will now easily be able to manage channel feedback and easily remove complaints, comments, or posts all in one place!
  • Enhanced Stats Screen (BlackBerry 10 Only): channel owners now have more detail on how subscribers joined with a new, fresh-looking UI.
  • Channels Restriction by Age and Location: configured from the CMC, channel owners can now restrict access to their channel to users from specific countries or below a certain age.
  • Private Channels: create a channel for just you, and select friends and family! You can now create private channels, limiting access to only those invited by the channel owner.
  • Channel Categories: users can now specify a category when creating a channel!
Discovering new, exciting channels has never been so simple -
  • Enhanced Channels Carousel (BlackBerry 10 Only): channels carousel has a new look and feel!  Featured channels now have their own tab and users have direct access to search right from the main BBM Channels screen.
  • Geolocation Prompt: BBM Channels now prompts users for consent to use their location to enhance search results and channel discovery.
  • Search Enhancements: Users can now join a channel straight from the search results page! Check out the new indicators in your search results to learn information like number of subscribers right from search!
  • Wondering what these look like? Search for the ‘TIFF’ Channel to get a feel for the new enhancements. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is under way today, and we are gearing up for the screening of exciting cinematic offerings from all over the world.  Keep up with the latest from the festival on TIFF’s official channel (C000A033C).
We’ve made it even easier to keep up to date with the channels you love
  • Notification Banner  (BlackBerry 10 Only, already available in BBOS): receive notifications within BBM Channels when someone replies to your comments or comments on your channel!
  • Favourite Channels (BlackBerry 10 Only, already available in BBOS): you can now select channels as favourites to receive notifications each time your favourite channel publishes new posts!
  • New Channels Home Screen (BlackBerry 10 Only): easily discover the newest, hottest channels- when you open BBM Channels you will now see the featured channels and be easily able to switch between views.
  • Improvements to Updates Feed: avatar updates experience enhanced; when your contacts change their display picture you will now be notified in the updates feed and be able to view the image in large format.

If you're using BBM Channels then you'll certainly want to get yourself updated as there's plenty of improvements with this release. Again, the update is live in both the BlackBerry Beta Zone and within the BlackBerry Beta Zone app so there shouldn't be much of an issue with everyone getting the update at the same time. BBM Channels updated to v10.2.20.32 in the BlackBerry Beta Zone

Also worth noting, Alex Kinsella just said this on Twitter:

"Just in case we forgot to mention, BBM for iPhone was submitted for review 2 wks ago. #waiting #BBM4ALL"

Just got the email 3 minutes ago... but I don't use BBM because nobody I know has a BlackBerry.

--Q10 and Canadian all the way!

Crossing platform soon dw! I don't think channels will be dropping with it for some time though..

Has anyone else been having issues accessing the Web portal from their phone?..

Came here to say the exact same thing. Downloaded quickly and installed perfectly. I love this new app!

Such a nice feature. I'm glad it doesn't take logging in, downloading the installer, and getting an install key. The beta zone app makes it so much easier.

I'm new to BBM Channels - I can't figure out how to browse through all available channels. I'm at the home page with the "Featured Channels" but I don't see a way to browse all available.

There are three tabs at the top, first is featured channels, second is your channels, third is browse, and then there is a magnifying glass for search :)

Kind Regards, Tino Chiko C0008DDD1 TechCraze!

I see the three buttons. On mine they are Featured, Subscribed and the one with the globe icon is coming up "Latest Activity".

Sorry yes you're right the magnifying glass is the search and for the moment there doesn't seem to be a way to just browse..

Kind Regards, Tino Chiko C0008DDD1 TechCraze!

That's a big flaw. There might be channels out there that I could be interested in, but might not thing to search for. Browse is an important feature.

This is probably the sweetest update they've done. It's so many features and the UI has gotten an overhaul. The only thing missing now is to remove or expand the character limit.

I would actually use it more lol. Twitter kind of bores me but I feel like BBM Channels is a bit of a mini blog and more engaging. For example with something like 800 characters I could have more quality in my posts and better spacing especially when reporting tech announcement.

Posted via CB10

Mmm but for me that doesn't go with the BB ethos 'keep moving forward' I feel subscribers on channels want more of a 'peek in, peek out' sort of thing, when you start going to 800 characters that's no longer something parallel to keep moving forward. Especially considering that at least for the moment channels is restricted to mobile except for the owner, keeping it short and sweet means (in the context of a tech channel) that you get the main pints accords, supply a link for those who do want to delve into it, but for those who don't and are on the go they still get the main information, I don't know how they got to 400 characters but i assume there was some logic or maths behind it..

This is exactly what I think. If they had short, say 15s video clips, I think they would have all angles covered. Maybe even add short audio clips. It's kinda like if Facebook and Twitter had a baby. The private channels are like Facebook and the public ones are twitter.

Best part about this is the Beta Zone app allows auto-upgrading OTA vs having to download off the website and get the passwords in email. Yea!!

That's a lot of enhancement. I am looking to use the 'Private Channel' to be sort of like instagram and twitter combined.

This was a mistake, God I hate doing this

1. People already are, just check the Crackberry subscription number
2. How many times did Google attempt to launch a social network before Google+?
3. BBM music was a very different concept to BBM Channels

We all must be no one then.

I myself have 4 Channels with 10-100 subs each, and I'm just a small ape...Maybe I should make one for all the nobodies too...In fact , Join my channel for Nobodies C0012189A

Hey man where's your app? That's one app people will use right? Am I right? Am I right? Am I right????!!

Correction: Everybody but YOU will use it. I used to never use BBM because no one I know has BBs but since channels came out BBM is easily one of my top 5 most frequently used apps hands down.

Does this update include toast notifications, a la 10.2?

I want channels but don't wanna give up the toast!

Love this update because of BBM Channels I no longer use Facebook...Channels and Twitter is all I use and the Beta Zone app worked perfectly #TeamBlackBerry

I know this is about BBM channels and this update is pretty sweet, but GO Beta Zone app!

Posted via CB10

If you get the Beta Zone app, no need to connect to windows or mac

Kind Regards, Tino Chiko C0008DDD1 TechCraze!

Honestly, if BlackBerry brings channels functionality at the same time as cross platform BBM, this is going to be a BIG HIT with the IOS and android crowds. There's really nothing as full featured in any messaging universe as BBM is right now.

Love bbm channels. Who thought of this, give him a hero cookie

Never tried it. Just downloaded thru the Beta Zone app. Wow, I've been missing out! This may become my most used app next to Crackberry! Nice to see BlackBerry doing some great things. Now market this stuff! Keep moving BlackBerry!

They need to add the ability when scrolling through the updates on the Q10 to hide the top and or bottom bars

Posted via CB10

First it was so easy to download through the app. Second love the new features. So easy now to know if someone has commented or replied to your comment. Loving it. Thanks BlackBerry.
If you don't have channels, then you are not having fun.

I changed my fone from the Z10 to a Q10
I was using the beta app on d Z10 I now have it installed on d Q10. I got the notification to download the updated bbm channels for bb10, but anytime I try to update the bbm channel I get an error message saying; permission denied

Please anyone encountered this? And how do I get this running?
N/B: the beta app worked perfectly on the Z10.

Unfortunately BBM Channel this update abandoned China, upgraded BBM Channel region has been limited. This is the blackberry, proud blackberry go where? In China, to support the blackberry is very simple, only needs to improve the deadly stupid marketing!

I don't have a beta zone account, can anyone provide the bar file for me to download and sideload?
