BBM Channels updated, brings the ability to block comments with PINs

If you're a BBM Channels user watch your Beta Zone account for an update. The update isn't a big update but it does bring a few new features, the biggest being the ability to now block comments that contain a PIN or CPIN (Channel PIN). A lot of people have complained about the amount of spam making its way into the comments that do not have anything to do with the content posted, so this is a welcome addition for many.

Also included in the updated is a new Updates tab. It replaces the Contacts tab found along the Action Bar at the bottom of the BBM app. This ties in nicely with the last update which brought about the feature of being able to reply to your contacts' status updates.

There are also some other updates specific to BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10, which I think are pretty neat.

New features in BBM Channels update:

  • New Updates Tab: A new, easily accessible updates filter can now be found in the Updates section! Effortlessly switch your updates view between ‘All’, ‘Contacts’ and ‘Channels’.
  • Block comments that have PIN or CPIN: getting sick of spam? Wish people would stop posting their PIN in comments? Now your subscribers won’t be able to post their personal PIN or Channel PIN in the comments.

BlackBerry 10 Users Only:

  • "Start Chat" Button: From the Chats tab you can now quickly start a BBM Chat with a contact by selecting the new chat icon!

BlackBerry OS Users Only:

  • Threaded Comment Notifications – Following the conversation is easier than ever!
  • Favorite Channels – Highlight your favorite Channels to control which notifications you receive.

If you don't see the update available yet, check back later. If you're lucky enough to have the Beta Zone app for BlackBerry 10, load it up and see for updates. If you haven't yet given it a try, you can sign up for a Beta Zone account today.

If you're looking to follow members of the CrackBerry team, you can find our BBM Channel PINs here.

BBM Channels updated, brings the ability to block comments with PINs

But then we would be inadvertently blocking people who are talking about the FIRST time they used a BlackBerry, or the FIRST time they had....

Small price to pay to get rid of the annoyance. Its something a 12 year old would do.

I have to try this out. Just haven't had time for the beta zone lately

Fingers crossed for mid-September when summer actually ends. Releasing is October would be a sure way to start another negative media frenzy...

Agreed, I think they could potentially save some mind share if BlackBerry released OS 10.2 with BBM cross platform and the Z30 all mid September. Definitely would turn a couple heads IMHO

We are hoping with 10.2, but I have not hear anything like that from BlackBerry. Have you? Maybe it will come B4 or after10.2....though I think it would be good to have it come with 10.2 & don't see it coming after

Keep in mind that the "reactions" section still says "coming soon" so it'll probably stay in beta until at least that's out. Because with big companies, something is beta until all the "coming soons" are gone :)

Can you initialize a chat in a channel yet? As in an open chat for the channel itself, not a private chat to a group member..

Posted via CB10

Doesn't seem like it in this release. Still just chats with the Channel owner. I did talk to Alex Kinsella a few weeks ago and he hinted that it was coming. Can't wait for group chat and one on one chats with Channel subscribers.

At least they are bringing updates every two weeks now which is awesome.

I think the release will coincide with the BBM cross platform rollout..besides they still have to test the "reactions" feature in channels

If only the Beta Zone was supported here in Curaçao :( Really want to try BBM Channels out

If you want access from a country that's not supported, setup a vpn to a UK host and register from there as a UK citizen.

Then you will have access

Good point, even though I haven't gone through such a channel yet, but I guess we could see blocking pins and channel pins as an option in channel settings. If such channels exist and are being used well BlackBerry should definitely consider this.

Posted via CB10

Doesn't appear to be the case -- I can't find an option, and the release notes just say "Comments with PIN or CPIN are now Blocked" -- which is fine, for my channel.

OK this is great, they are making BBM channels more feature rich than I had imagined. Hopefully at release there won't be a difference in features between BBOS and BB10 versions like there is in this beta update.

The best part is that they are already monitoring how ppl may misuse features and correcting it. --> blocking pin and cpin posts in comments.

Is their a way yet to create a group, and be able to post in it as yourself, not as the actual group itself? For example, I have made a Channel for my rec soccer team as a bunch of us have Berry's, but whenever I post it's done so under the alias of the created group, not as myself. I'd love to be able to create a group and then just be able to post a regular member like anyone else....

"Threaded Comment Notifications – Following the conversation is easier than ever!"

That was my suggestion! I'm glad I wasn't the only one to want that feature....Though it kinda sucks that it's currently for BBOS; though I'm sure it will be coming to BB10 soon enouph.

Nice pic!! My black Q is sporting the Crackberry case today.
Anyone know if there is an official unofficial release date for BBM channels?

Posted via CB10

The one feature I would like is separate chats for the channel, for example one chat for sales, one for customer support, etc., these should be matched with multiple administrators for the channel and multiple users with privileges that may post and/or attend chats etc. I guess that would be a powerful tool for customer service in a small company (maybe in a medium also).

Did they fix the keyboard issue where it covered the conversations?????

Refuse to install if this is not fixed!

Has the dark theme returned for Q10 users with this new beta version? AFAIK BlackBerry removed it from one of the later beta builds.

Sadly, no. The last update is where it changed and it doesn't look like it's coming back. Would like the option to choose.

Posted via CB10

Thanks for the reply! Too bad, guess I'll stay with my already outdated beta for now :(

What make we think it is not September release? Look, BBM Team invited us to try out every new features they completed! This is the signs that they are almost ready. It'll be released sometime in September base on what I have seen so far.

I don't know about you, ever since this update the battery drain on my z10 is frightening. Down 40% overnight and nothing else on my handset has changed! Any ideas?
