BBM for Android and iPhone sees over 10 million downloads in 24 hours

By Adam Zeis on 22 Oct 2013 03:34 pm EDT

We've already seen that BBM for Android topped well over 1 million downloads, and BlackBerry has now stated that between both Android and iPhone users, BBM has seen over 10 million downloads. We expected the numbers to be big but this is definitely great to see. The numbers come in for just 24 hours since the initial release and make BBM one best single-day openings to date.

Press Release

BBM achieves top ranking in the App Store in over 75 countries within the first 24 hours

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - October 22, 2013) - In just 24 hours BBM™ has been downloaded over 10 million times by Android™ and iPhone® users, one of the best single-day openings for a mobile app to date. BBM, the premier private social network from BlackBerry® (NASDAQ: BBRY)(TSX: BB), is available for free in the App Store(SM) and Google Play™ for immediate download.

BBM also quickly rose through the rankings on the App Store to be the number one free app in more than 75 countries in the first 24 hours, including the US, Canada, the UK, Indonesia and most of the Middle East. User ratings in both the App Store and Google Play are overwhelmingly positive, earning BBM 60,000 five-star reviews on Google Play from about 87,000 reviews.

"This has been an incredible launch for BBM across Android and iPhone devices. The mobile messaging market is full of opportunity for BBM. We intend to be the leading private social network for everyone who needs the immediate communication and collaboration of instant messaging combined with the privacy, control and reliability delivered through BBM," said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President, BBM at BlackBerry.

BBM users, old and new, are enjoying the following features:

  • BBM Chat - Enjoy real, immediate conversations with friends on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones. Not only does BBM let people know their message has been delivered and read, it also shows them when a contact is responding to a message.
  • More than chat - With BBM, customers can simply and instantly share files such as photos and voice notes. Multi-person chats are a great way to invite contacts to chat together.
  • Get in the Group - BBM Groups lets users invite up to 30 friends to chat together, as well as share photo albums, calendars and files.
  • Post Updates and stay in the know - BBM lets people post a personal message, profile picture and a current status, and lets contacts see statuses instantly in Updates.
  • Your unique PIN - Every BBM user has a unique PIN that maintains privacy, so users are not required to ever give out their phone number or email address to a new or casual contact.

Android and iPhone users will have access to BBM Voice and Video calling, as well as the new community building tool - BBM Channels - in the near future.

BBM for Android and iPhone sees over 10 million downloads in 24 hours

they could start by finding a way to let these 10 million people login, the waiting list is hurting for shur.

As far as I know mozilla had 8 million downloads in 24 hrs, so I guess guiness may be knocking on Blackberrys door.

I have a samsung galaxy s4 and I just downloaded bbm but its not letting accept people I can only add them is anyone else having this problem

The only downside is that whatsapp can send larger videos and send images to a group chat.

BBM can share images in a group though but not when you invite someone to a chat.

10 M downloads and impressive BBM mobile computing video from Spain I smell BlackBerry MDM with BBM , BBM Channels , BBM Money and MDM

Take note instagram and Netflix. Take note. Hmmmmm, there are still well over ten million BlackBerry owners, make your app available to them and you get more revenue and profit that would go way above the overhead. But, you still don't want your app on a BlackBerry and you can make $$$. Makes me wonder who paid off Netflix.

Posted via CB10

...we dumped Netflix A long time ago as the picture quality was crap on my big plasma...what's available in BlackBerry World works quite well...and the picture quality is miles better that Netflix had...prices for rentals are reasonable as are the buy prices...Netflix will never come back on my devices even if they release it...hell even Crackle (that is on BB10) works better...and it's free, if you don't mind commercials...

Posted via CB10

netflix has a video quality settings on the browser. It's defaulted to SD quality so to avoid data overages. I had to go and change it to get HD quality

Amazing. BlackBerry has no margin for error though. They need to keep pushing the envelope, innovating, adding features. And probably find a way to monetize it eventually. Maybe a "BBM Plus" for $1 or 2 a month that allows extras, large file sharing or something.

Posted via CB10

They need to lift the 6MB limit, I believe that's the only real drawback. Matter of fact not just for BBM but for all messages on the device.

Those are all ex BlackBerry owners who left and will never come back. Amazingly high #

Posted via Q10 using CB10

You may think that but all the people I've told. Family members and a couple of close friends have never used BBM or a BlackBerry device. So not all as you have stated

Tell them to close the app fully and then try reopening it! Should work perfectly after that even without the email!

Posted via CB10 (My amazing Q10)

Will IOS & Andriod BBM have the same security as a Blackberry Device BBM?
Do it work the same and go thru BlackBerry Infrastructure (BBI)?

First off, great news. 2nd people do care about security. If you don't believe me, tell them Facebook, Google even Apple is gathering information to make your experiences better. Now tell them that these companies server has been hacked and user information may have been compromised. Tell them all photos and files saved to the cloud has been stolen. Tell me they don't care.

People don't care about security until something happens to them.

When someone tells you they don't care about security. Tell them you'll remember this conversation when they have a cyber security breach or security breach at home.

Posted via CB10

It's like insurance. You don't need it until something bad happens. BlackBerry is on the verge of taking over the corporate world as Android and Apple via the NSA have completely let anyone interested in security down.

Trolls should be forced to use BB10!

Wow, just think at $0.99? I'm sure everyone would have paid a dollar.

ZED-10 for the person on the move. OS

I am keeping positive overall and it is great to see a positive thread for a change but BlackBerry needs to convert those downloads in to users. Too many still waiting for emails. If the BBM servers can handle billions of messages daily, then BlackBerry needs to get emails out to all these new downloads ASAP!! My daughter is still waiting after 24 hours. Let's go BlackBerry, do it!!!

Posted via CB10

Is anyone else having reports from their friends who have downloaded BBM already (and gotten their PIN) that they can't add you, or..... if they have added you, you haven't received the invite?
And vice-versa?
This is the case for me right now...

Posted via CB10

Nope, my 3 Apple loving kids D / l'd and registered this afternoon and got their email by 5:00. Pins and invites completed and they all show up in my BBM contacts.
Now if they only had video chat....

Posted via CB10

I downloaded BBM to my iPhone but it gave me a pin that is different from my Z10. What does that mean? And what doesn't make sense is that I can't receive messages on more than one device, like say iMessage. why is this so?

It's better that way. Do you really want your private chats going to more than one device at the same time?

Posted via CB10

Coz it's annoying as fu**... I hope bb did this on purpose.. I hate iMsg for that reason every message I get my 2 iphones and ipad are just vibrating constantly.. fu**ing annoying especially at the library

Posted via CB10 on my Z10!

Yes nothing like your wife getting all your messages while she uses your ipad. BlackBerry is the best.

Trolls should be forced to use BB10!

This is a very good app, however how does it help Blackberry? I can't even get 10.2 with out side loading.

Posted via CB10

I dare say this could be the first sign of former users wading once again into the BlackBerry pool. Keep the 4 planned devices better than average, BB10 the most secure, and BlackBerry World competitive and the gap should start closing.

Sent from my BlackBerry Z30

that's how many users BlackBerry should have got if they did things right 2 years ago!

Posted via CB10

Got my Apple kids back on BBM can finally have a decent conversation without wondering if the message went through! Great job BB! Loving the Z30 great hardware build.

I hope they get people through the wait list as fast as possible. The wait list is a double-edged sword method. One one edge it allows BlackBerry's servers not to be overloaded. On the other edge, a lot of people will be impatient trying to wait for BlackBerry to send the confirmation email for a long time. Because of their impatience, they'll try to convince others not to download it. That's not a good thing for BlackBerry. There's the first roadblock that BlackBerry needs to successfully conquer if they want BBM to have a chance in the IM competition arena. There's obviously more roadblocks that BlackBerry needs to conquer. But if they can get over the roadblocks, I believe BBM will have a bright future. :]

Posted via CB10

When you are rolling out over 10 million downloads in less than 24 hours and all those people are now telling others about it, one has to be patient. I think someone was saying that if you shut down your iphone, then restart I will load. Else go get a bb10 device and have it all.

Trolls should be forced to use BB10!

Still waiting for my mum to get her email, been waiting since 10pm uk time and still nothing. Very bad showing BB, very bad.

At least my brother who has an S4 is now back on bbm, just added him to my contact list.

I got my wife's IPhone hooked up with Bbm 5 minutes after downloading it using the bypass technique.

Posted via CB10

If All 60 Million Crackberrian can convert 1 friend to BBM than we have 120 Million user. I have converted 14 so far. Cmon Crackberrian

Posted via BlackBerry Z810

They need to follow up ASAP with voice and video calling! Desktop client needs to happen soon too to stay ahead of everyone else!

Posted via CB10

I pré registered. I gave my email to 3 different ppl and it worked for them too. 2 Droids and 1 iphone. So if you have a friend waiting for BBM and you pre-registered give them the email you used and it should work right away for them too. They have to delete the app and re-download it using the email you give them. Good luck!

Not approved by the NSA. My personal Q10

Great news. Let's go guys. Tell your family and friends to at least try it out. It is free.

I've already converted 4 people let's go c rack berry nation. Over the top sent from my black is beautiful BB10 Z10

Posted via CB10

If you read Andrew Blocking's post the real answer to what bbm will heck is right there. "Private Social Media". Think about that for a bit..... Possibilities are endless.

Posted via CB10

Can you imagine if they launched this 2 years ago, WOW, keep them coming BlackBerry..

Line ups rule! People get pissed cause they feel like they are missing out. Makes them want it more!

Posted via CB10

One of the best reasons to use bbm for me is that when I go overseas, switch sim card, no need to go through the setup again like on WhatsApp

Posted via CB10

Now imagine if blackberry would have released this app 3 years earlier like Jim balsilie wanted. There would simply be no Whatsapp period. Now the war is on.

Posted via CB10

BlackBerry's Servers are going through a stress test right now.. I really hope BlackBerry can handle all this new user base.. And I hope they make sure updates are pushed out efficiently and everyone is satisfied or else people will just revert back to saying how BlackBerry sucks.. They need to take this momentum and run with it!

That's amazing! Hope it hits 100 million by the end of the month!

Posted via the best phone ever. The white Z10.

If you pre-registered please share the email you used with your friends who are waiting. I have 10 ppl so far that successfully created a BBM account using my email to bypass the waiting line. Share this post. It's simple to do. Doesn't seem to matter how many ppl use the same email. It's only used to get you past the wait screen NOT for account setup. You all will still get your unique PIN/BBID so no worries. Good luck!

Not approved by the NSA. My personal Q10

Any one from Japan having success with installing BBM? All of my Japanese contact are getting a message not compatible. Is there a work around?

So sorry if anyone has asked this question before, but, why didn't BlackBerry charge all the non-BlackBerry users $0.99 for the app? With this kind of response charging a small price would not seem to harm the roll-out? There should be a small price to pay for "those"refusing to buy a BlackBerry phone!

BB10 IS the best!

So what now? BBM is a massive hit! Will this profit the blackberry company? Will this make any changes to the company from being sold?

Posted via CB10

Beautiful things on the way. WhatsApp is NOT in Oxford Dictionary and competition is good.

Posted via CB10

I am getting requests like mad and they are coming from friends that I haven't even told about BBM. Sweeet

Posted via CB10

My wife never got a confirmation email so I told her to shut down her One and restart it. BBM immediately let her register for her info and was up and running 15 minutes after her phone shutdown with no confirmation email.

Spreading the love with my Z10

This reminds me of my first experience with bbm. A few invites from people I've never met which will surely follow with an uninstall when we run out of things to txt about. No video chat after all this hype and wait?!? The only send file option through the app is pics from the gallery? Oh but the smiley faces are cute...

So anyone think, this will hurt our BlackBerry devices? I mean now that people have the option to use their loved BBM on any device, is this hurting the device game?

Posted via CB10

Add the stupid feature of deleting your photo you sent to someone in 10seconds ala snapchat and BBM would dominant. What people want is to send dirty pics of themselves and receive in return, so give it to them no matter how ridiculous it is and the obvious flaw of taking screen shots.

Posted via CB10

I have to agree. Add a snap chat like feature to BBM like an auto delete on pictures, and with the oncoming voice/video chat, not one other mobile messaging system could come close to touching BBM.

How about just SnapChat integrations?
..and Instagram
..and Vine

Use the BBM numbers for leverage, and get it on bb10 as well..

Posted via CB10

I just had to chime in on this and say even amongst my younger peer group (18-25 year old range) I am seeing a lot of buzz about BBM on facebook. I am seeing lots of pins being shared and a lot of positive posts about it. I really have to say, I did not expect such a massive response, but rather a muted one. I was wrong! If BlackBerry plays this right, this could quite possibly be the thing that brings their brand back into the conscience of the people they need the most. Can't wait for my Android friends to get voice and video!

Ya, is a fact that's top download. But what's the point of having it release but have to wait for registration?

Posted by BlackBerry Z30

it took almost a whole day before my contacts got their ID.... not sure if that is a good or bad thing but at least now I can tell them that there was a few million in queue...

my BBM list growing yay!! Except for one friend who refuses to upgrade from iOS4 so.... what a bummer

All my friends that downloaded it on their iphones and androids love it! It's working smooth as silk for us!

Posted via CB10

You have no idea the level of excitement I just had getting a bbm message from someone who owns an iphone!

Posted via CB10 on Q10

BBM should soon bring sending videos in BBM groups.. one basic thing which is missing as compared to WhatsApp..

Posted via CB10

Went to the Leaf game and was surprised (and happy) to see BlackBerry not only advertising BlackBerry at the game but also BBM for all with the address on all the electronic advertising screens and the score clock itself. Also heard a few conversations about it around me.

We are all connected.

My new WhatsApp status is: BBM, BBM everywhere, #BBM4ALL 5days 'til I replace you completely.

Posted via CB10

Installed on my ipad & hubby's Android. Works like a charm. Just sent out a few invits for my friend living outside Canada.

Posted via CB10

I hope in the long run this helps BlackBerry phone sales, I think it will do wonders for BlackBerry's name and image so hopefully sales follow

this is really annoying, while 10 million people already enjoying bbm over android, i still at waiting line even after blackberry already email i'm at the front line... oh,

Guys, thx for the advice, already succeeded log in, another trick I've learned is, you can bypass waiting list using the approved email that already granted access if you have multiple devices to install BBM. Then create different BlackBerry ID after bypass.

Man this is the greatest thing since slice bread.......go on instagram and type bbm in the hash tag search and see how many pin numbers are out there already. it's crazy.

Posted via CB10

I shared it on my Facebook timeline and everybody downloded, now they are rushing to me for assistance how to set it up.

Never felt better.

And they are totally checking out my z10. :)

Dear Black/CrackBerry, I have BlackBerry bold 9900 and why is it that i need to take BlackBerry service plan to get BBM while every one else can use for free?? Why arenu discriminating the old BlackBerry holders??

Posted via CB10

I tried to download BBM on my Nexus 7 and got some app masquerading as BBM and full of ads. Tried to make me give it a 5-star review before I could use it.

The app in the Play Store was called "BBM for Android."

Couldn't find the real deal. Will look again this morning to see if it's there.

Posted via CB10

In a previous post someone claimed you could put it on the IPAD.

I get the phrase not available for the IPad. Why not? Is it because it isn't available for the playbook?

It works on iPad (wifi and cellular units). Go look at requirements in the Apple Store

Poetry in Motion

Why Bbm work on normal data plan for android and iphone and not on blackberry and it also work on wifi for android and iphone device . That's injustice

Scratch my previous post. It is available for the IPad as a phone sized app. There isn't an app specifically designed for the tablet.

That is so not true. Almost all the reviews in playstore are fake and hence fake download numbers, because a review cannot be written without downloading the app. Go to bbm review and you'll see this comment with certain variations(waiting, smooth, love you etc.) everywhere from different users:
"Thank you so much blackberry team. I was waiting this app. Its really great user friendly and smooth."

That is loads of fake ass reviews and download number. And I can understand your bias.
Here is the image for all gay ass non-believing bb fans:

I got two iphone BBM invites from my brother and cousin, I accepted it but it sent them an invitation rather that I wanted to have them as contacts. Is this how it works for them? I'm confused

Posted via CB10

There are tons of fake reviews on the play store. Could this also mean some fake downloads too? Something smells fishy, 10 million in 24 hours is a little too good... dubious!

Posted via CB10

No need to lash out at BlackBerry users like in your last paragraph. We have nothing to do with possibly fake reviews and downloads.

Posted via CB10

That is only targeted to the non-believing one's, in case of an opposing contention to my comment. I'm not being rude to the one's who can understand their rudeness to other app developers.

Looking very good. I was in two malls yesterday at various mobile phone stores and at almost every one of then someone had brought up multi-platform bbm . Lots of ppl dumping other apps to get on bbm. Everyone stated it's working well and looking forward to video/voice chat as well.

Posted via CB10

I'm not even a little bit surprised by this. BBM was an awesome app when I had my BB devices years ago and it's an awesome app now on my Note 2.

Wow! That is amazing. I've asked my friends to download BBM and all the Apple users have to wait in line to get an email. People must be download it like crazy to have to wait for an app.

The best phone ever!

And they said that people won't use BBM anymore because it's not relevant.

Who else can do this better than them?

Posted via CB10

This is awesome news. I hope it keeps up. I'm glad something is going BlackBerry's way. Maybe this is the start of positive things to happen to BB. One concerning issue is the negative articles still, even in regards to BBM. No matter what some or most articles are still saying something negative. Example is Tech News and their article about BBM. Can't they just write a positive article for once. Why is their such a hate on for BB? They just don't want to see them succeed or something.

Posted via CB10

Hrrrmmm, my only fear would be that with this level of exposure, if things are FUBAR'd in these releases, it could be 10,000,000 nails in the coffin :(

I sure hope this goes well...

Posted via CB10

It's amazing to see the haitian community ripping themselves apart waiting on that email!!!

BBM going cross platform was a great move

It has become a positive joke on my newsfeeds on fb! While some are saying victory I got my email, others are complaining (jealousy) that they still have to wait!

Posted via CB10

How long does it take to get the return email once you download the app on ios after its sent?

Posted Via My Z10 Smarterphone !

What I don't like as a Q10 user about BBM is that even if I am on BBM, it still buzzez or gives a sound notification when a message pops. It is very irritating for me and the people around me. Like to see that fixed like whatsapp does.

Posted via CB10

Just because BBM is highly downloaded does not mean it is just as respected by those using it. There's several bugs especially the issue where people are not receving the emails to be able to use the service, as well as the current update crashing when some users click "Contacts". I'll admit, I'm not enjoying this experience so far but I'll give it time to improve.

Just downloaded Bbm on wife's android phone. I just went through it there is no video chat or voice chat. So disappointed in Bbm

Oh I would like to add to this post that it should be able sync with your phone contact's to automatically add users just like viber, what's app, ect.....

The most important number is active users … this download numbers have no pointless use, myself already download and re-download to address bugs at least 10 times. Many iPhone and Android users are reporting they only have few contacts on BBM so not use it anymore.

Can anyone PLEASE help me. I have iphone 5 on 7.02 and for some reason cant find where my saved voice notes are? Can anyone please help. I tried online and numerous methods.. Anyone WHERE ARE MY VOICE NOTES ON IPHONE 5?? PLEASE!!
