By Adam Zeis on 1 Apr 2014 09:00 am EDT

As expected, the latest version of BBM will begin rolling out today across BlackBerry, iPhone and Android devices. BBM 2.1 brings with it BBM Stickers as well as some new features like pictures in multi-person chats and larger file transfers of up to 16MB.

The stickers will be available in both free and paid packs through the integrated BBM Shop. Packs will contain between 20-25 stickers and will be for brands like Shaun the Sheep and WWE.

Press Release

BBM Chats Just Got More Fun with the Introduction of Stickers

Multi-Person Photo Sharing and Larger File Transfers Round Out New Features

Waterloo, ON - BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a global leader in mobile communications, today announced an update of BBM™, a leading mobile messaging platform for private and secure communications, that allows customers to further personalize and enhance their chat experiences.

Available for download later today from the respective app stores for the Android™, BlackBerry® and iOS® platforms, BBM will now offer stickers – larger, bolder and more expressive images than emoticons – that BBM users can add to their BBM chats. Customers will be able to purchase and download sticker packs from the new BBM Shop found in BBM.

“Stickers are another great example of how we’re making the BBM experience more engaging and fun for our customers,” said David Proulx, Senior Director, BBM at BlackBerry. “Stickers let you personalize your chats and strike the right chord with people around the world who rely on stickers in chats when they connect with colleagues, family, friends, peers and partners.”

BBM customers will be able to download a variety of sticker packs right inside BBM from the BBM Shop. Each sticker pack contains between 20 and 25 stickers and features content developed by talented artists or relating to a theme or a character like CosCat, Gilbert’s Tales or Bubble Bot, as well as sticker packs featuring content from popular brands including Shaun the Sheep and WWE. To start, sticker packs will either be offered for free, or cost US $1.99, or an approximate equivalent amount in the local currency, and will be billed through the device’s app store.

With WrestleMania 30 just around the corner, WWE is planning to give away a free sticker pack to its fans through BBM. In addition, a free sticker pack created by BlackBerry featuring favorite BBM emoticons will be available to all BBM customers that download the new update. BlackBerry plans to add new sticker packs on a regular basis.

In addition to stickers, BBM customers can now easily share photos in multi-person chats*. Photos will be delivered in the chat as a thumbnail that can be opened to reveal the image in full size. BBM customers can also now send higher quality photos, videos and presentations thanks to larger in-chat file transfers. Files up to 16MB can now be shared in a chat, an increase of 10MB.**

BBM 2.1 now available for BlackBerry, iPhone and Android devices

Hopefully lots of bugs are cleared up with this and there's greater cross-platform reliability... BB needs to find a way to get more people onto BBM and make those people *active users*...

I heat ya, i've had a lot of friends download it, than drop it after a couple weeks of usage.

Posted via CB10

I know! Main complaints were no landscape mode, notifications failed to alert of messages, pictures not sending, and Bbm voice didn't work ( as in not receiving the call or cutting out mid call)

Posted via CB10

Nobody should have to review anything. That is the point. If you want people to switch from Whatsapp or whatever, it has to be easy. It has to have the features people want. My buddy is pissed- again- that there is no landscape. Why not? Is that a hard thing to add or something. It's really embarrassing. Hopefully reliability is there, cause god knows we won't be using stickers.

I don't get why a lot of people are crying about landscape mode. I'm just speaking from observation around me, whether it on the bus or just generally with friends/co-workers, but I don't think anyone uses landscape mode. Not obviously saying that no one does, I'm sure some do. Like I said, my own observation. It seems people just enjoy ripping into blackberry for whatever reason

I tend to agree with you. Landscape mode seems unnecessary and most people wont use it. But he has a 5S and those things are thinner than an SI swimsuit model. First thing I told him to do was a get a phone with a properly sized screen. The screens on those phones are a joke.

First impression was critical and they messed up as it was still buggy and turned off a lot users who decided to give it a try and see what all the big fuss was about BBM.

 Posted via CB10 on my  Z30

Fails.. Again... such a bad marketing strategy from BB, it should be release together with BB z3, exclusive for few weeks before hit to other platform. BB z3 with BBM sticker is another selling point. But... a trojan horse is still somewhere inside  marketing team.

Posted via CB10

That's not a big deal and besides all announcements take time to trickle down thru media and blogs plus people may get the update before even reading about it anyway.

Because the various app stores do NOT guarantee the precise time it will be available to every region and every customer.

Just go to your blackberry world and clock on the bbm app... you should see an update now to click :)... London Canada

Posted via CB10

Not sure why, but I never seem to the push updates. I even went to my apps and scanned for updates; nothing, but when going to BBM it had the update rather than open. Weird.

Tapped and flicked from my BlackBerry Z30!

"Rolling out today" means some time today. I don't think it's necessary to tell us it s not available yet. Yeesh.

Posted via CB10

No problem. Seems like other silly people from other countries had the same silky idea as you already. o.O

Australia for 12 hours, checked early this morning, but yeah, we're close to the date line

Zzzzwiped from a Zedevice....

Awesome can't wait, we BlackBerry users need some good news after yesterday's sad news about the PlayBook :(

Stay Classy CrackBerry Nation!

They plan on selling some stickers, so they make money from it. Getting video takes weeks of programming and testing, I prefer they take their time and make it well.

If there was no time, they would have already called it quits. Obviously, they have SOME time and only time will tell if they actually used the time they had wisely.

If this update still havent added group chat mute and unread messages thread my entire group of friends is going to delete BBM.

+1. Very true. Have sent the same feedback many times in different forums. I don't see it getting done with this update.

Posted via CB10

But STICKERS! If you're not nine years old, stickers are nothing more than time wasted on additions instead of improvements. Stickers? Really? Stickers are going to make this app more professional? Stickers do nothing but add cheeziness. Wouldn't it be more USEFUL to add the ability to see who as read a message in group chat? Oh no no.... STICKERS! The cheeziness of stickers is a greater detriment than the benefit of the limited revenue they will be making off the tweens for stickers.

Nothing wrong with "STICKERS" if it generates money. Every little bit helps, plus there is nothing to say the same group of people who worked on stickers are the ones capable of making the app "more professional." I am OK with BBRY pursuing every viable option towards profitability.

A 36 year old married father and I love the idea of stickers. Not everything needs to be serious and suit and tie like...

Posted via CB10

Thank you alternator77.
I hope to get some stickers that match my wallpapers on my devices.
Maybe it's the word "stickers" that are getting people so irritated? They really are/will be little pieces of shareable art.

So, you complain about stickers but you find no benefit that comes with increasing the file size limit for sends that came with the same update?

BlackBerry is broadening their audience. They have to with a multi-platform app such as this. It's not like they're trying to put a friendly face on say a multi-platform medical advice app. It's a messaging app. Everyone has the capability to use messaging apps, from business people, to family people to everyone in between. So, they're going to try to appease everyone at least some.

I find it unreasonable for people to expect so much so quickly from BBM on Android and iOS. I also find it silly that people actually expect BlackBerry to shun consumers and focus completely on businesses. Stickers is a consumer product. BBM is the best venue to attract consumers to their brand.

Nifty Food BBM Channel C003262E5

Well said. With the Z3 coming out in Indonesia, there will, or hopefully will be, a large audience for this type of feature. For the professional, no, the stickers are not going to be a big seller.

Tapped and flicked from my BlackBerry Z30!

Oh I certainly do find benefit with the increased file size limit; I did not mean to suggest that this whole update is a waste. The time spent to increase the file size limit (probably minutes) is actually time well spent coding. What I am saying is that with so many other improvements that that would make BBM better for EVERYONE, the decision to prioritize "stickers", in my opinion is a mistake.

Yes, yes, added revenue from the minority of BBM users, blah, blah blah. I know they want to increase their user-base and revenue, but are people going to use an IM client because they can buy and send their friends little, pre-made images? Maybe I'm the minority, but I know for a fact that 100% of my ~20 BBM contacts will never ever use "stickers" and will have to navigate around them. At the very least it would be nice to have the option to turn stickers off.

I agree with you on these points you made: "I find it unreasonable for people to expect so much so quickly from BBM on Android and iOS. I also find it silly that people actually expect BlackBerry to shun consumers and focus completely on businesses." ...and yes, stickers are a consumer product, but if that is supposed to be a drawing feature to the platform, either BlackBerry or myself is out of touch. Hell, maybe it's just me and my ~20 BBM contacts. I know that "stickers" were not implemented for a professional mid-30s married with kids white guy from Canada... and what do I know about teenage girls in Indonesia and global marketing? All I know is I want my BBM to be a secure, efficient, collaborative instant messenger without unnecessary, pointless bullshit like cartoon wrestlers or 500 emoticons. I think it would be worthwhile to have a switch/option in BBM: "Professional Mode" which would only turn on features that matter, and "Consumer Mode" which would turn on all the useless unicorn fart sparkles.

@alternator77: No insult intended: There are a bunch of adults that like My Little Pony too. I'm 100% fine with different strokes for different folks.

Very true, but BBM's user base from adults is not growing. It needs to grow it from teens/preteens segment so stickers are essential. It should have gone 1 up on the competition with animated stickers with audio instead of playing catchup. It has animated avatars so why not animated stickers? Always too little too late!

Cool. My IPhone and Android friends are going to be even more happy they left whatsapp

Posted via CB10

Yes I also refuse to use any other IM other than BBM ( use SMS as well, some ppl don't use smartphones... ) some friends just habe BBM on their devices to contact me.

Sweet, I was starting t wonder why this might be released, since I saw that bbm bar file being tossed around in forums and articles. Official release is always better, since my android/iOS buddies can get in on what's happening m

Posted via CB10

When will we see video chat come for non-BlackBerry devices to communicate to us BlackBerry users

Posted via CB10

FYI for anyone on a leaked OS there is a big notice in press release that it will only work properly with a official OS

Posted via CB10

Many regions in the world and certain demographics love chat stickers, and its competitors have them. Pretty simple, really.

I still don't get what this "Stickers" thing is about. It sounds like something my niece would have been interested in back when she was 8 or 9.

What are they? Like big emoticons or something?

Good morning everyone!
We're pumped to be rolling out the latest version of BBM TODAY (no, not an April fools day joke!).
Just so you're not sitting around clicking refresh all morning - the update will begin to roll out this afternoon as we've said in our blog at
Thanks, and enjoy!

How do we know it's really Jeff Gadway? This is the Internet, anyone can claim to be whoever they want.

Posted via CB10 using my Gorgeous Z10

While larger file transfer is appreciated, stickers? Why? Let's get bug fixes/video calling so all the iPhone android users we get to download this don't think we're BlackBerry idiots. I get them to load it and 3 days later they delete it. Not a good situation.

Posted via CB10

Please, is there any reason why I can't get the update in Russia?? I can't find BBM when I search BBW and when I check my list of installed apps via BBW, BBM shows 'unavailable for this device'. :(

Posted via CB10

Thanks Jeff!

If you get this msg lets hope we can get the ability to send video clips in groups similar to the way Whatsapp does. Also when the DP in a group is changed please have it change for all members.

I really hope this generates revenue for BlackBerry....many people think it's a dumb idea and childish but over does it and they make millions on those all for BlackBerry to make money and we need to make that every division (hardware, bbm, qnx and bes) is profitable....the short ahead might look bleed and full of blackberry is dead nonsense but I can guarantee you the long road ahead is full of profits and stock going up and blackberry will rise higher than it ever was before

Another update goes by. Nothing really useful. Just a fun thing.

But the continue to let the FB stand as an ongoing POS.

I would venture to say more folks use FB then BBM.

Fix the apps that matter to the most!!

I want stickers, let's all buy a pack and help BlackBerry on software revenue, I'm sure in North America everybody can afford 2 bucks,

Posted via CB10

Little by little...there is no way all of a sudden they can do that it takes a lot of server power to process the meantime they upgrading their servers and when it can handle it then bbm video and so on can come...Rome wasn't built in a takes time

Apparently 80% of CB readers don't seem to get that. And chances are 80% have never run a business and so are clueless.

Posted via CB10

Agreed. I am convinced some people are just like parrots - repeating the usual criticisms without processing if it makes sense in the wider context of things.

How about 50GB? When you create an account from your BlackBerry you get 50GB for free, at least that was the promotion a few months ago, you can upload all the photos you want and then share the link.

Posted via CB10

I hope you don't mind all that network capacity loss causing your messages to arrive slower and less reliably. Because, yanno, you really need to send 30 minute cat videos over IM.

Don't you mean "The latest version of BBM for BlackBerry 10 (v10.3.1), BlackBerry OS (v8.2), Android smartphones (v2.1) and iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (v2.1) will begin to roll out this afternoon"?

2.1 is only the Android/iOS.

Also this:

"2. For the best BBM experience, run the official version of BlackBerry 10 OS.

smileysneakWe know there are people out there running leaked, un-official versions of BlackBerry 10 OS and that this can result in issues with BBM not behaving as expected – like not being able to open the app. The answer is simple. Run the official version of BlackBerry 10 OS for your designated smartphone and carrier. When you run un-official versions of software you’re asking for problems. We love that many of you are loyal and raving BlackBerry fans. And we thank you for that. We know that you are always excited to get the latest and greatest BlackBerry 10 features and trust us, we’re working hard to bring them to you as fast as possible and with the highest quality."

Lol, they don't like leaks over there...

If they dislike leaks that much, then they need to find a way to remove the slothful carriers out of the update equation altogether.

Posted via CB10

Well done and I will be very thankful for the additional file transfer allowable limit. Hopefully some of the whining around here will be addressed too but for me I have no complains really. I have one friend who deleted after installing but she's just a hater and we can't transform all of them. All my other friends on all other compatible platforms are quite happy.

Posted via CB10

I love the note to pretty much CrackBerry readers about not running leaks in the BlackBerry Blog post haha.

I'm sure all of us will now flash back to our carrier-approved operating systems...........

Posted via CB10

In the official press release, BlackBerry is saying the new BBM 2.1 is released for Android, BlackBerry and iPhone. Why can't they say for BlackBerry first..? :(

Although I'm not a fan of stickers, I think they will do really well with them.

It's always the odd improvements that work for some reason.

Posted via CB10

Not yet in Germany.

Idc about that stickers, but I hope that the compatiblity to other devices (andriod & ios) would be much better, because my friends aren't inspirate by BBM.. the registration is also not good :(

Another fact is that BB lost the chance to grab Whatsapp users, because the security isn't so nice like Threema (or other clients) and I hope they fix it with this update.

But I see one and last chance of BBM: multiple platfrom! The way to quit ICQ and other IM to get one device for all platform.. thats sound pretty good =)

(sry for my bad english^^)

Have they up the size of the text on the iphone? That is the biggest complaint I know of. No text size control on the phone.

Posted via CB10

Hey CB,please only use screenshots of BlackBerry's, I don't want to see any stupid looking azz icrap

Crackberry is quickly becoming the poor stepchild of "Mobile Nations".

I'm surprised you haven't noticed this yet.

Adam, hey Adam, I need help with something and Bla1ze is ignoring me, can you PM me?

Posted via CB10

If these stickers are not available on BBM groups then its its almost useless.

Groups is how IM's go viral and eventually achieves commercial success.

The IM with the best group features wins, why? Because its word of mouth from your closest circle of friends and whatever IM apps your friends use is the IM app that you will use the most.

Its very simple but BlackBerry is not understanding this.

Q10SQN100-3/, Z30, Z10, iP5, SGS3

Your right. And yet, there are no new features for Group Chats. More importantly than Stickers, there is still no file share in group chats. Can't share files, or pictures, or videos, or voice notes, or contacts or location. Nothing! Disapointed.

Posted via CB10

Stickers is such a stupid idea. Who the F is going to actually pay for these things? For a company that prides itself on the business user this decision is completely ridiculous. Right up there with that stupid music service they tried a while back.

LoL... Are you by any chance still in the mindset that Asians are poor cheap bloke like what you see in typical old Western movies? If so, go Google how much money Line made from stickers alone in 2013 (hint: it's more than $60 mio). Now carry on and next time, make a more educated post...

Yep well, what else do you expect from one of the company's most persistent critics here.

Everything is viewed through a negativity filter.

The stupid thing is I thought he lived in Asia, and one would expect a person in an Asian country to have a clue that stickers are hugely popular there.

It's actually very smart of BlackBerry to get this update pushed out prior to the debut of the Z3 in Indonesia. This is another example of Chen executing in ways his predecessors did not.

Yup, I know a few people that will use them. Reading the comments, you can't help but wonder if all the Whatsapp fans are getting nervous. No update from them despite all those promises of new features early in Q2. Nice to see Blackberry quick off the mark and Whatsapp under delivering. Nice timing Mr. Chen.

I don't think we need to fuss about when we get it. It's coming.

What I would like to see is a wider range of sticker types, although I'll wait to see what's on offer before speaking too much.

I don't care about Shaun the sheep or whatever, but I'd go for some bolder BBM emoticon style stickers, or generic, idea or event-themed ones: disaster, joy, excitement, etc. I think the sticker thing is a great idea though, and I look forward to seeing how things pan out.

April fools or not, BBM needs to fix iOS notifications faaaaaaast! A couple of friends of mine really hate BBM because notifications are unreliable.

They said you will get the update sometime today. Does it matter if it's now or later? No not really

Posted via CB10

File size thing is good though.

Add stickers to CB10 please?

Posted on CB10 with the Q10 came out for me, probably it's not 2.1 because the changelog shows old features.
Updating anyways.

Will the update allow pictures to be sent on group chats? My wife and her friends have gone back to multi-person texting in order to be able to share pictures.

Posted via CB10 on my Z10

Yes, that's one of the new features of this update. Edit: By group chats you mean the Multiperson chats right? In that case yes.

Actually mean within a Group. Wife created a group with her friends. I realize that multi-person chats you can, just like texting. If not, not sure my wife will be compelled to use BBM with her friends, who all have iPhones or Android devices.

Posted via CB10 on my Z10

Although video chat is at the top of my BBM wish list (for my Android and iPhone friends) and overall reliability for those platforms' versions, I'm still happy to see this update coming at us.

The pictures for BBM multi person chats as well as the file transfer size upgrade are both solid features and I'll be happy to pony-up for a few stickers packs if for no other reason than to prop BlackBerry up monetarily and support their efforts. I've burned hard earned cash on worse things.

Posted via CB10

Landscape mode is number one reason folks I know won't use it.. if you have a phone with a flip out keyboard and it turns the screen to type BBM crashes. If we have it in the hub what is stopping the main client..

Posted via CB10

4 o'clock Nigerian time nd no update yet. If this is an April fool it's such a shame coz blackberry dosent need this kind of attention

Posted via CB10

$1.99 seems pretty expensive for stickers. They should be cheaper. You can get a lot of good apps at that price. Why is BlackBerry always pricing their stuff so high?

I'm pretty much satisfied with bum, it's actually my primary messaging platform. But all I ask is that they fix a bug that I've contacted them about so many times. I'm using a android device, and all I ask is that my bbm will notify me of a new message when i have a current chat active. That's all I ask. What, no one else has this problem other than me? common guys, lets do this....

At last Stickers.
That was the review I saw, and there's a few more pertaining to stickers.

Posted via CB10 But im guessing it's a lie because that's my installed version and I'm not seeing anything.

Posted via CB10

Well, that's the old BBM. The version in closed Beta is v10.3.12.67. So the version coming out today will higher than the one in closed Beta.

Posted via CB10 using my Gorgeous Z10

Can anyone comment on how intrusive the sponsored channels are in this update? I am weary of updating based on that alone. I am just curious how they actually look/operate. Thanks to anyone who can share any info!

BBM needs to make it cross-devices, like Telegram or Skype. Many friends downloaded but quit after a week.

Posted via CB10

Thank you. I've tried what you suggested and everything else...restart, hard restart, wiped device, reinstalled, etc. Always get the error message which tells me to try again later.

Just for clarification, I didn't mean to imply that I have the latest version of BBM. Hopefully, when the update appears, it will solve the problem.

So if a sticker owner send me stickers, will I be able to view them if I don't purchase the pack?

 CB10 

Do lots of people really pay for stickers? I don't really understand the crave if any. Will stickers save BlackBerry?

Posted via CB10

I don't think this is a feature BlackBerry is implementing to "save them". It will bring in additional revenue.

Posted via CB10

Haven't received the update yet. I've checked BlackBerry World several time but there is no update.

Posted via BlackBerry Z30

Yep, I'm not getting anything on my end... or anything on the android side... will check periodically throughout the day. Yay for big ol' stickers!! lol

My friend has an iPhone 5s and when I BBM Voice call him, it never rings or even lights up. We've tried everything. Settings, profiles, etc...
Can someone help me figure out how to get the iPhone to ring?

I hate when they do this, release it then make an announcement. A lot of people aren't getting any work done cause they're checking their phone every 5 min. Why say coming later today just say out now

Posted via CB10

I guess you'd prefer that random people take over their message for them after they unexpectedly encounter the app in the various app stores, hmm?

The company needs to control their message, and they do not have direct control over precisely when the app becomes available to each customer using each of the various app stores.

I see ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with their timing on this announcement.

Wow that was a whole write up about stickers! BBM needs a lot more then friggen stickers to keep up with whatsapp!

Seriously, stickers.... lol

Fingers crossed theres a whack load of fixes in this update! If I cant send multiple pictures yet im going to go crazy.

Posted via CB10

I have also experienced hellish problems using BBM Voice. When it works, it's great, but it often tells me I'm calling and yet the other person doesn't get a thing. Hopefully this update will improve that as well...?

Posted via CB10 using my Gorgeous Z10

Two major complaints:
1. Sticker doesn't work in Groups!!! Now, that's what I call poor implementation of an otherwise great idea... yet again by BlackBerry. When will they ever learn?!
2. Picture sharing in multi-person chats also doesn't work in Groups

That's a good idea, who wants to be in a group where a bunch of people are sending stickers. It would piss people off.
