Press Release
BBM Voice and BBM Channels Now Available for Android and iPhone Customers

New features also include simple file and photo sharing, location sharing, over 100 new emoticons and Dropbox integration for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry Smartphones

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - February 13, 2014) - A new version of BBM™ will be available later today for Android™, iPhone and BlackBerry® (NASDAQ: BBRY)(TSX: BB) customers, giving them lots of exciting new features. Android and iPhone customers will now be able to make free voice calls to BBM contacts over a Wi-Fi® or data connection with BBM Voice(i), as well as access BBM Channels. In addition, BBM customers on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry(ii) smartphones will have more to chat about with fast one-click sharing of photos, documents, voice notes and more. BBM customers will also be able to share their live location for a specified amount of time with other BBM contacts by using location sharing, powered by Glympse, and will have 100 new emoticons available to help them say what's on their mind.

"BBM continues to deliver new functionality as a premier messaging platform that provides a simple and effective way to stay connected. Today's announcement gives Android and iPhone customers the rich experience of BBM Voice and BBM Channels - two great ways to connect with friends, family and colleagues, to build out communities around shared interests, and to follow your favorite people and brands," said John Sims, President, Global Enterprise Solutions at BlackBerry. "BBM continues to quickly evolve as a social mobile platform for consumers as well as for business customers through innovative features that give you great new ways to connect and share with each other."

BBM Channels

BBM Channels lets customers chat with other BBM users about topics that interest them. Customers can join channels about a range of topics from products, hobbies and sports to entertainment, fashion, cars and more. Channels can be created by brands, businesses and BBM customers alike and are a great way to communicate directly and immediately with people who share common interests in the broader BBM community.

By posting to their channel, channel owners immediately reach their subscribers with a message that can spark discussions. "Scheduled chat hours" allow BBM customers to have live chats with the channel owner - a great way to engage directly with their favorite channels one on one.

BBM Channels maintains the BBM core values of immediacy, privacy and control. Because BBM Channels live right inside BBM, BBM customers get notified the moment one of the channels they follow has a new post, or when someone responds to their comments.

With BBM Channels, customers can engage with brands or other customers without having to add them to their contact lists, thereby maintaining a high level of privacy. With BBM Channels, customers have the discretion to opt in only to channel brands that are relevant to them and always have control over the channels they subscribe to, while channel owners have control over how subscribers interact with their channel.

For brands and businesses, BBM Channels provides a new way to interact and connect with a highly engaged and targeted mobile audience. There are thousands of brands already using BBM Channels to engage with their customers. More on BBM Channels:

  • Open, yet private. Channel owners control the conversation on their channels. Channel owners can choose to: allow subscribers to comment on posts freely or to approve them first; let subscribers chat with them directly anytime, or set chat hours; they can interact with subscribers without ever giving out personal details, or adding them as a personal BBM Contact. And with private channels, channel owners can keep in touch with closer circles on an invite-only basis.
  • Channel reporting. Each channel has its own performance dashboard built right in. Channel owners can see stats on how subscribers are engaging with their channel, how many people have viewed each post and how the subscriber base is growing.
  • It's fast and easy. Start a channel right from a BlackBerry, iPhone or Android smartphone. It only takes a few minutes to set up a BBM Channel and once it is set up, posting to it is as simple as choosing a photo and adding a short message

Location Sharing

With location sharing powered by Glympse, customers can now share their real-time location with one or several BBM contacts for a specified amount of time - perfect for when people are running late, out with friends and more. BBM puts control in the customers' hands, allowing them to specify how long they want to share their location for, by setting a timer. When the timer runs out the customers' location becomes private again.

Dropbox Support

Built-in support for Dropbox™ makes it easy to send large files like presentations and videos. With Dropbox built in to BBM, you can send a file from your personal cloud directly to a BBM contact. On the receiving end, you can save the file directly to your smartphone or add it to your Dropbox account.

BBM customers have been asking for more emoticons, and now more than 100 new emoticons have been added to help you express yourself. Many of the new emoticons came from ideas submitted by customers!

BBM continues to connect friends, family and colleagues across a myriad of mobile networks, as the standard for mobile instant messaging with a fast, reliable, and engaging experience that puts control of privacy and personal information back in the customers' hands.

BBM 2.0 for BlackBerry, Android and iOS now available - Brings channels, voice, location sharing and more

Been trying to update my wife's iPhone and refreshed app store a cazillion times, I thought it was just me.

Dear Crackberry, I can't get Glympse to work. When I select it all I get is a spinning circle... I waited for 3-5 mins. Nothing happens! Can you help?

This update has been paramount for BlackBerry. Glimpse works perfectly, and the integration with Android (in my case the only tested) is fantastic. My younger brother with his Note 3 was actually impressed with the performance in general. Now he is curious for bbm video, and he is an android fanboy (hardcore). I hope more reactions like this fuel the slowly but steady BlackBerry turnaround and we get to enjoy this platform for many years.

Hard core BlackBerry 'er

upgraded to bbm 2.0 and launched the app, its giving me "bbm has lost its connection. please wait while server attempts to reconnect". it been like that for 2 hours already. someone help please!

Not available in Russia! :( Why? Can someone help...if you can...please... :(
(I use a Z10)

This is how I did it:

- Go to Blackberry World on your computer:
- Log into your account using your BBID
- Navigate to BBM in the webstore (on your computer)
- Click "Download" and it will send the update to your phone, v10.3.3.68, it will seem like nothing happened
- Go to Blackberry World on your phone and refresh for updates
- It should show up......hope this works for you

Above tips came from BerryFlow website

Sorry to be a party popper but this is a pretty stupid update. Let's see it for what it is...

Emoticons - Because when I think of BBM, I thinkin of stupid little smiley faces being a better conveyor of my thoughts than actual words.

100 new emoticons - because I really want to scroll through over 100 stupid little smiley faces to figure out which one best delivers the nuances of my thoughts.

BBM voice - Because cell phones just weren't doing voice well enough. (I don't even use BBM voice NOW with my BlackBerry contacts)

BBM VOICE - Because it's 1998 (we hardly use phones to talk today)

No bbm video....a feature people would actually use.

The other features are just novelties. And that right there is why blackberry is dying. They're all about novelty now and not innovation. And they dont even do "novelty" well. I can see Dropbox implementation having some use bit not really. People will still use email to send Dropbox links since people are using those files ultimately on A COMPUTER at the end of the day and not on a smart phone.
BlackBerry works mighty hard on delivering mediocrity. Bring back the RIM days....please!!!

I have updated on my Z30 yesterday. I've tested with my wife's iphone5 and it worked very well. Crystal clear sound. The only problem with the iphone is that it doesn't rings when I call it. There is a way to sort this?

On my Z30 I am facing some strange troubles since the update which I don't know if it is due to the update or not. Battery is running very fast. This morning all my contacts were disorded and linked to other contacts on a strange way (14 links in some cases meaning that some contacts have simply merged with others). I have rebooted the phone several times and apparently the contacts are now ok. Also in the morning I had to deleted some applications because a message notification appeared stating that the phone was full (no new apps have been downloaded). It was also a bit lag. Any one had experienced this on their Z30?

P.S. I didn't test yet on the Q10

BBM 2.0 is not working on my BlackBerry Z10 on Vodafone network Ireland....

So BBM has become completely useless, as I cannot delete the app and re download, I am at a loss how to fix the problem. Need advice.

Hi Guys,

I just upgraded my BBM to 10.3 on my Q10 running leaked OS 10.2.1 and now my BBM does open at all can any1 help??

Hi, can any of you tech folks clear a question up? Wondering when using BBM Voice over the carriers systems, Can someone listen to voice as a scanner like when use of phone frequencies? Or does use of BBM Voice encrypt conversation so nobody able to listen to speech? Is the BBM voice able to encrypt in like when use over Wifi? Just wondering if there is a difference in the SECURITY feature of use of BBM Voice, Thanks in advance...

I noticed that the new emoticons don't work in the BlackBerry Hub display. Guess BBM must be ahead of 10.2.1

So tried out the Glympse "location" feature by sending it to a friend and then we went for a walk. It sort of works. ideally it would track me until we we up, but until I reopened BBM it had only the original location. I suppose if you are busy txting back and forth,... I'm here.. where are you?.... when can you meet me?..."can you see me behind the guy in the red coat?"... etc, it might work. But it was more lame than I had hoped.

Today I showed the updated BBM to 4 co-workers who all use IOS or Android phones. After seeing Glympse and voice notes in action they all downloaded BBM on the spot. We tested it all and it worked fine on all the devices. Now they can't wait to share this with family, friends and other co-workers. It was great to see. It is a great work tool on top of being a social app.

I have BBM on my iPad as well as on my Z10. When using Glympse on my iPad I noticed that when I am tracking someone, the path they took was traced with a blue line as well as the speed they are travelling at is shown above where they are. On the Z10 it doesn't trace where they have been or show the speed. To see the speed you have to drop down the menu at the top. I haven't seen it working on Android yet to see the differences. One thing I would like to be included in a future update is the inclusion of satellite view.
