Press Release

BBM Voice and BBM Channels Now Available for Android and iPhone Customers

New features also include simple file and photo sharing, location sharing, over 100 new emoticons and Dropbox integration for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry Smartphones

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - February 13, 2014) - A new version of BBM™ will be available later today for Android™, iPhone and BlackBerry® (NASDAQ: BBRY)(TSX: BB) customers, giving them lots of exciting new features. Android and iPhone customers will now be able to make free voice calls to BBM contacts over a Wi-Fi® or data connection with BBM Voice(i), as well as access BBM Channels. In addition, BBM customers on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry(ii) smartphones will have more to chat about with fast one-click sharing of photos, documents, voice notes and more. BBM customers will also be able to share their live location for a specified amount of time with other BBM contacts by using location sharing, powered by Glympse, and will have 100 new emoticons available to help them say what's on their mind.

"BBM continues to deliver new functionality as a premier messaging platform that provides a simple and effective way to stay connected. Today's announcement gives Android and iPhone customers the rich experience of BBM Voice and BBM Channels - two great ways to connect with friends, family and colleagues, to build out communities around shared interests, and to follow your favorite people and brands," said John Sims, President, Global Enterprise Solutions at BlackBerry. "BBM continues to quickly evolve as a social mobile platform for consumers as well as for business customers through innovative features that give you great new ways to connect and share with each other."

BBM Channels

BBM Channels lets customers chat with other BBM users about topics that interest them. Customers can join channels about a range of topics from products, hobbies and sports to entertainment, fashion, cars and more. Channels can be created by brands, businesses and BBM customers alike and are a great way to communicate directly and immediately with people who share common interests in the broader BBM community.

By posting to their channel, channel owners immediately reach their subscribers with a message that can spark discussions. "Scheduled chat hours" allow BBM customers to have live chats with the channel owner - a great way to engage directly with their favorite channels one on one.

BBM Channels maintains the BBM core values of immediacy, privacy and control. Because BBM Channels live right inside BBM, BBM customers get notified the moment one of the channels they follow has a new post, or when someone responds to their comments.

With BBM Channels, customers can engage with brands or other customers without having to add them to their contact lists, thereby maintaining a high level of privacy. With BBM Channels, customers have the discretion to opt in only to channel brands that are relevant to them and always have control over the channels they subscribe to, while channel owners have control over how subscribers interact with their channel.

For brands and businesses, BBM Channels provides a new way to interact and connect with a highly engaged and targeted mobile audience. There are thousands of brands already using BBM Channels to engage with their customers. More on BBM Channels:

  • Open, yet private. Channel owners control the conversation on their channels. Channel owners can choose to: allow subscribers to comment on posts freely or to approve them first; let subscribers chat with them directly anytime, or set chat hours; they can interact with subscribers without ever giving out personal details, or adding them as a personal BBM Contact. And with private channels, channel owners can keep in touch with closer circles on an invite-only basis.
  • Channel reporting. Each channel has its own performance dashboard built right in. Channel owners can see stats on how subscribers are engaging with their channel, how many people have viewed each post and how the subscriber base is growing.
  • It's fast and easy. Start a channel right from a BlackBerry, iPhone or Android smartphone. It only takes a few minutes to set up a BBM Channel and once it is set up, posting to it is as simple as choosing a photo and adding a short message

Location Sharing

With location sharing powered by Glympse, customers can now share their real-time location with one or several BBM contacts for a specified amount of time - perfect for when people are running late, out with friends and more. BBM puts control in the customers' hands, allowing them to specify how long they want to share their location for, by setting a timer. When the timer runs out the customers' location becomes private again.

Dropbox Support

Built-in support for Dropbox™ makes it easy to send large files like presentations and videos. With Dropbox built in to BBM, you can send a file from your personal cloud directly to a BBM contact. On the receiving end, you can save the file directly to your smartphone or add it to your Dropbox account.

Emoticons

BBM customers have been asking for more emoticons, and now more than 100 new emoticons have been added to help you express yourself. Many of the new emoticons came from ideas submitted by customers!

BBM continues to connect friends, family and colleagues across a myriad of mobile networks, as the standard for mobile instant messaging with a fast, reliable, and engaging experience that puts control of privacy and personal information back in the customers' hands.

i think should be now, this morning. check back through BB World don't wait for the update to get pushed, sometimes BBW push notification is so mediocre.

From twitter @BlackBerry: Look for the latest @BBM for BlackBerry 10 (10.3) also rolling out today. Includes location sharing, new emoticons and Dropbox

Posted via CB10

Will it work properly on 10.2.1.176. Thought I remember someone saying it sucked on a leaked 10.2.1 OS

Posted via CB10

Great news but how many people went to BBWorld and checked for update (I did) wish BlackBerry released it then the press release, not other way around. Now I'm going to be checking my phone every 5 minutes and not gonna get any work done

Posted via CB10

Does it have inline picture preview in group chats?

Inline group picture posting?

Does it have "go to last read msg"?

Posted via CB10

So any word on when verizon is going to come out with 10.2? Or how about 10.3? Getting old waiting for this shit

Posted via CB10

BBM Voice.. no BBM Video just yet..? Just wondering because I didn't think I seen it in the article.. still Good news!

From my Q10, Waiting for OS 10.2.1 from T-Mobile

no BBM video as yet for the cross platform, BUT let it be like that, so we can say to the Androids & iPhoners, "you want BBM video? drop your phone now man, get a proper BB10 phone!" HAHA!

Well, if voice works my android friends, it's delete time for Skype. BBM is really shaping up to be the premier platform.

Okay, so I'm trying to get all my pep's that are still on a glorified iPod to use BBM and they all complain that they do not get notified when they get a message - no sound like a regular text. Does anyone know how to solve this? I looked at my old iPhone and didn't see any way to set it up on that wonderful Crapple device.

I'm annoyed they got the new emoticons before the majority of bb10 users (sorry someone had to complain) haha

Great update, but I'm worried that there is no mention of BB's "Natural Sound", because that would have put BBM way ahead of the competition.

Hey BB Police. Looks like we got an "internet thug" here!

Back off, troll. Last thing you want is a tussle wit dis boi.

I'm not seeing it for android yet. Has it been released on blackberry world yet? My z10 is at home so I can't check.
I'm in the uk

Wow what a great news. I want more subs and I want BlackBerry to feature my channel.

ChannelX C000D3759 We promote channels

Yeah in BBW. I went to my installed apps and clicked on BBM. It said update. I did. Works Awesome. Nothing in Play Store yet though.

USA, Northeast Verizon Z10.

Update available in NY. I had to do a search on BlackBerry World for BBM before I seen the update. I hope they fix the notifications for updates on BlackBerry World.

Posted Via AT&T BlackBerry Z10

I was expecting that there would be a D/R feature on BBM Groups on this update.and the " you're RBombed" notifs.. *Sigh*

Downloading now in Ireland.

It's not coming through as an update. I had to search for BBM in BBW. The option to update was then available.

Posted via CB10

If it makes you happy (which I'm sure it will), my wife's nexus doesn't yet have an update available on the playstore.

Posted via CB10

Got it! Finally let me switch my BBM back to dark theme after the channels update made it light.

Posted via CB10

Tried restarting the phone so it doesnt uses caches rather from net. BBW needs to fix updates notification as soon the developer posted the update as well it need to learn to reduce the update file size rather full size of the app every time .

Is it only Dropbox support in BBM, not Box as well? That would be a shame since they were both integrated from the start... :(

Posted via CB10

Restarted and even then no luck. Still its not showing update button i believe they are slowly releasing to users based on queue

I had to do the same as what someone else mentioned. Go to BlackBerry World, search for and select BBM, and víola! The button said Update and it's installing as I type. Everyone else may want to try to do the same if you haven't already.

Posted via CB10

Not working at all.
When you tap BBM, tries to load then disappears.
Will not open BBM.
Can't seem to delete and reinstall either.

Q10 running leaked 10.2.1.1055 on AT&T

Posted via Commodore 64

Just got the update on my Verizon Z30 running 10.2.0 in Dallas, TX - went to the BBW, clicked on the app and the update button was available. Nothing yet on my Verizon Q10 running leaked 10.2.1.1055.

Got it on my z30 after I searched for it in BBW.. Atlanta GA good ole USofA

Posted via the Android CrackBerry App!

no, it will not. bum is not available in russian more than 6 month. so i don't believe it will ever come.

Why does BlackBerry tweet this : "Look for the latest @BBM for BlackBerry 10 (10.3) also rolling out today. Includes location sharing, new emoticons and Dropbox" ???

I didn't know we have BlackBerry OS 10.3 already or do we?

It was poorly worded but its a tweet so ya... The version of BBM is 10.3. There are no OS updates rolling out today. 10.2.1 is still the latest official

I got it from BBW. Not only is it working, but now has "back button" in chat. I've been waiting for this. I hated always having to swipe the keyboard down to get out of the chat.

Works perfectly for me... you may need to give it a few seconds to fully work... especially on android... everything needs a few longer seconds on android

I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I thought it was fixed for the official release. I'm gonna try the sachesi method

Posted via CB10

I did restart my device, official 10.2.1 hasn't been released for T-mobile usa but bbm 10.3 was and I'm on 10.2.1.176 which doesn't function with the new bbm

Posted via CB10

I'm working on trying to install sachesi and download the official from canada in rogers, I hope it doesn't affect my network in tmobile usa

Posted via CB10

Hey just an update on my bbm situation, I fixed it, but I had to get on sachesi to force install the official os

Posted via CB10

I find if you open up Blackberry World then go to Settings>General>Refresh Blackberry World it helped me get the update. Try it and let me know if that works!

No pushed update notification from BlackBerry World, went to BlackBerry World and in my world did a search for manual update and no update, went to search for bbm, and instead if installed it said update!

Posted via CB10

Go to BBW and search BBM. Will show you update option. Pretty cool new stuff! Spamming my contacts now, and Facebook :).

Posted via CB10 with my ultra cool Z10

not seeing the update yet in the play store, but i just refreshed the web version of the play store and saw that the bbm app offers in app purchases. very interesting.

Got it but its bit buggy when you open contacts its takes an extra half a second to open all text due to jitter unlike previous version. There is small white flash when you click on attach or emoji.

Cue the biatch fest! ;)

But I think if given a proper try out most people would find BBM 2.0 is quite solid and fun to use judging by the beta. It's still developing but it has come a long way already.

I'm loving BBM 2.0

Need to get this information out to the masses

It is so be patient! Bb07 is going to get a lot of updating soon.

Posted using the best phone ever, the Z30!

No Russia love ((((
I didn't get any update for along time for bbm( z10 user)
My wife (iPhone) can't download bbm because of Russia ((((

Version : 1.0.6.157 is the latest on US apps store, where is version 2.0? Anyone have a link to download version 2.0?

Posted via CB10

Hi Guys,

So I am new to the whole Crackberry forum so I'm not sure if this is where to seek advice but I have had a Z10 for about 6 months now. I am from New Jersey and my carrier is Verizon and I love the Z10 but for about 2 weeks now my BBM has stopped being able to send messages. It always comes up with the red X no matter who I send it to. I thought maybe the upgrade today would help but it has not. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing similar problems or if anyone knows how to fix it? Or could it be Verizon's problem? Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

Looks like its a problem with your plan/verizon. Give them a call and ask them to restart your network. They'll walk you through it.
You can also try backing up and restoring your device through BB Link.
I hope this helps. Somehow.

They have no apps to use so might as well come here and brag about a slow as molasses chat app that was cool when NSync was still relevant and Joey Fatone was still getting laid.

Love it. Can never have too many emoticons. Message area seems a lil cropped with the easy share thing tho

Best Update Ever! Keep Moving with Blackberry and Glympse!!! I'm on the last leak (1925) that was out and running fine!!! Yknow I never did get a notification for the official os....

Great. BBM now has a third party location service embedded into its app. Now the NSA will have another way to track the civilian population.

Now with the new update BBM is longer the best messaging app out there, the hability of making voice calls and the possibility of sharing all kind of files, not only photos and videos makes BBM beyond great. And now BBM is integrated with BOX! What else?

I can now set notification tones from my User modifiable Notification folder on Android. I am not restricted to using only notification tones in the system notifications folder anymore. Loving the update so far, haven't tried channels and voice yet

finally, a great present on the valentine's day, thanks #BBM and keep moving always, BlackBerry!!!

hope things are going better and better each day starting from BBM 2.0 onwards. woohoo!!!

god damn it, if your running a leaked version dont even bother. now i have to go from 10.2.1.1259 to 10.0 bullshit. i hate sprint so much. i love BlackBerry so much

Ok before I go on my rant let me just say used to be a blackberry loyalist and i believe that the company and the devices are very good . At the beginning of october i moved on to the moto x and love this device . Now for my rant of the new bmm 2.0 , thank you for all the new added things like location , talk and much more but why did blackberry have to mess up the UI by placing the update button in the main three quick icons and remove contacts ??? When i was on blackberry i loved the fact that everything was so fast when coming to communication but now you give me ( in my mind ) a useless button in updates to replace by far one of the most important buttons contacts ? why would you do that ? now if i want to contact someone that i don't have a currant chat with it is now an extra swipe and press , why not leave it the same or give us an option to put whatever three buttons we want on the bbm home screen for android . The whole blackberry thing is doing it now and fast , being productive , but now it feels like a step back . I understand that blackberry is trying to make bbm the biggest socail app / network on the planet and to be honest it is the only cross messenger app i use because it is the best , it fast , the best communication app ever to hit the play store but why change that ? updates are useless to me and why not keep it on the side menu like before ? maybe i am weird and think updates are not important but i think contacts are the most important when using a messaging app . rant done

On BlackBerry, when you're in the Chats screen, there's a button on the top right of the screen for starting a new chat with a new contact. Is it not there on Android or iOS?

no it isn't , I guess that is the bad part about bbm that blackberry still has it the best when it comes to the app

No BlackBerry os 10.2.1 yet. No BBM 2.0 yet! And I'm really hoping BBM 2.0 fixes some glitches that appeared on BBM like not being able to upload a profile picture to any of my groups.

Posted via CB10

you cant put emotions in your personal status or your name, only in chats theres no option to put them on your status is this gonna be like it for ever or will there be a update to sort it?

I have android xperia s it worked flawless slight jerk while starting after update but it working gr8 on voice calls.

Got my update on my z30 earlier tonight, awesome update and loving the new emoticons and location sharing. Shame no one I know wants to use BBM lol, everyone I know is on Whatsapp and they won't change no matter what I say. As far as they are concerned BlackBerry is dead lol.

Just to add I've been LMAO at all the stupid comments earlier when people were flipping out that BlackBerry wasn't getting this update lol.

Posted via CB10

For some reason the CB10 app won't let me read the comments past page 8. Does anyone else have this problem?

Posted via CB10

Finally Got it and tested with android voice call ultimate HD quality its like a wifi phone call. No background noise. Amazing BBM team keep improving with more file sharing size uploads other than dropbox. Even dropbox is limited for free users say 6gb max

Is anyone going to answer the question why BBM 10.3 doesn't work on leaked versions of the O.S? Is there a solution to this?

A Lot of short fuses today-just trying out the new Bbm features and loving it so far. In terms of stock price don't let this very manipulated stock represent the real value of the company - the big players have been putting the screws to blackberry for years they gain if BlackBerry fails. The cell companies have not been helping and why would they when they have large commitments to apple,Samsung. In a lot of cases they just parrot what they hear in the media (which is usually only negative stories) .
