Looks like someone sent the karma police after these people. You counterfeit batteries, bad things are going to happen.

Now we know why some people had multiple replacement devices, overheating and burnt out devices. Remeber Assurion provides not just insurance replacements, but works with carriers for direct replacement of warranty handsets.

One of my users told me last weekend while on a trip, he smelled something burning in his hotel room (hold off on the obvious jokes). He looked over at his nightstand and his Curve was litteraly smoking. Pulled it apart quickly and the battery was boiling hot. He got another batter from teh VZ store, and within minutes, it did the same thing. Sounds like HIS was internal to the phone, but who knows.

On a side note, I wonder if the "TORCH" will come with these hot batteries.

Since 2004?!
6 years and they just now recalling some batteries that they wanna claim are fakes! Yeah right!
RIM just don't wanna take the blame for manufacturing faulty batteries.
...and you thought your BB was heating up cuz it "works so hard"

I personally have noticed that the Tour has came with two kinds of batteries.. My first one had a slight texture to it and the second one had a smooth feeling and no texture... This came directly from Sprint (and probably RIM) as it was a brand new replacement and WAS NOT A RECONDITIONED DEVICE... Does this mean one was a fake battery??

There are tons of fake batteries around. Just look at ebay.

You can be sure that the $4 replacement OEM batteries were not sold through any official channel.

That doesn't mean the batteries are not identical to OEM batteries though. The same factories that were commissioned by RIM to manufacture real batteries likely made the vast majority of fakes too. That same factory probably made many extras that RIM didn't order and distributed those to some local distributor buddy in raw unlabelled form. That distributor gets fake labels printed (again maybe even from the same printer who made the real ones or from the same artwork) and voila you have a fake battery made on the same assembly line as the real ones and physically identical.

You should know that RIM and all the phone companies do not make their own batteries. They often do not even manufacture the phones themselves. It's all contracted out. As long as the factory is willing to bend the rules and make extra batteries and sell them to a dirty distributor you will get a large number of high quality fakes.

Now the next problem are the not so high quality fakes. These are either units that failed testing and were sold for scrap or units produced as complete rip offs in another factory as you would have imagined. When the failed battery looks identical to legitimate batteries then these were likely rejected units sold as scrap to a recycler who put them into circulation. Also because RIM may use multiple suppliers you may see a few variations on the exact design of a legitimate battery so you cannot just compare a replacement to the original battery your phone came with. RIM may have switched contractors 3 times since then. If you had examples of all variations of legitimate batteries and the "fake" battery does not exactly match any of them (slight variations in plastic colour, seams, plastic injection marks, indentations, etc) then it's a complete rip off produced outside of the official channel.

The worst kind of fakes would be the rejected units, next would be complete rip offs from a different factory. The best fakes would be the over run units manufactured from the same line as real ones and tested like real ones. The problem is you cannot tell the difference between any of them.

And BTW the $4 ebay battery could still be a good quality battery identical to a real one. RIM and their distribution channel adds a huge profit margin on the sale of replacements. Likely the factory actually made a little more by selling to the dirty distributor per unit that RIM was contracting them to make units. So if RIM is paying $0.75 and the distributor pays $1.50 per battery you can see the incentive to sell under the table.

TWO THINGS COME TO MIND RIGHT AWAY. ONE WE WERE TOLD WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR CURVE 8330 FROM sPRINT THEY WERE BRAND NEW PHONES. YET THE ARTICLE STATES BATTERIES WERE SUPPLIED FOR REFURBISHED PHONES. COULD IT BE THAT WE WERE NOT GETTING THE "TRUTH" ABOUT WHAT WE WERE BUYING! TWO IF THAT IS CORRECT I THINK CRACKBERRY NEEDS TO LOOK AT THEIR INVENTORY JUST TO DOUBLE CHECK BECAUSE ACCORDING THE CONSUMER SITE THAT MIGHT BE QUESTIONABLE. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, IF SPRINT SOLD NEW PHONES AS REFURBISHED.....ONCE AGAIN WHAT COMPANY CAN YOU TRUST BECAUSE ALL THE ADVERTISING IN THE WORLD CANNOT CHANGE THE CHARACTER OF WHAT A COMPANY OR PERSON REPRESENTS.

After reading about the blackberry torch, it's the best of both worlds with keypad and touch screen. Count me in.

We received the letter from ascurion, got the replacement, but our other 3 Blackberries have the same batteries!!! Because we didn't get a replacement on the others, Ascurion won't replace them and T-Mobile won't do anything because (2 years later...) it is past the 30 day bologna. Bad Business. Waiting for end of contract to get Torch...AND another carrier!
