The BlackBerry "Niagara" 9630 has yet to be officially acknowledged by Research in Motion, but that hasn't stopped it from going under the microsope a few times already (CB 9630 Review Part I, CB 9630 Review Part II, BGR 9630 Review). So while the 9630's goodness is already out there for all to know, I know most of us CrackBerry addicts never get tired of looking at pre-release device footage.

That said, this latest BlackBerry 9630 video tour comes via thebigwletman, who has to be the youngest reviewer to ever get his hands on a pre-release BlackBerry. Be sure to check out these forum threads for the CrackBerry community's initial feedback (he says a few things that aren't very accurate). Take a watch... and let the blog post comments begin.

This video's all well and good...but how did this kid get a pre-release blackberry????

WhoWhat

Either Kevin or Boy Genius have kids, which I don't think is the case, or else somebody's mommy or daddy works at RIM and are soon going to get a severe reprimand. Considering you can read names in the address book and there's a Fido card in the device, it probably won't be too hard for somebody who cares to figure out who this kid is and how he got it. I can't wait to ditch my Storm for this as soon as it comes to Verizon. I'd be happy to see him be right and the Niagara get released next month.

sk817

I agree but how sure are you that it will come to verizon? Im willing to ditch my storm for it also but why so sure?

DixieNormous

I think his balls need to drop before he gets a BlackBerry. What is this kid going to need a BB for anyway? Make fart noises in his 5th grade history class?

The email setup asked if the device should be set up on BES. So, unless the person works at a place with enterprise servers, I get a feeling he swiped someone's device and did a review. Not many places have the Niagara (some may have it either via RIM or the carriers or large enterprises for testing), so, the segment of the population that have access to it is very limited. Then again, although the camera work is shoddy, I got the feeling the creator had an idea what was going to be posted...and made sure things were visible YET they weren't 100% identifiable (and traceable).

The guy also has a Rogers-branded Pearl Flip versus Niagara video up as well on his YouTube site. The Pearl Flip used also has a Fido card in there.

It's good to see the device physically out there somewhere. I'm just very uneasy about the thought of someone possibly taking the device without someone's knowledge or authorization, doing a review on it, and exposing whoever has rightful care of the device to a slew of questions (and maybe reprimands) from RIM.

Please everybody stop picking on the little kid even though he messed up a little you have to admit he is about the only one who gave everybody a Really good sneak peak "I'll Thank the Kid for trying if nobody else does. "THANKS KID" I work for T-mobile in Blackberry and PDA Tech support dept and that phone is not comming out for T-mobile we already got the Backberry Curve 8900 and Wi-Fi. Also, we get upcoming phone release on our new phones all the time in our system called streamline everyday(system used only for people who work for t-mobile yes it's part of the intranet) As a proud owner of the Blackberry Curve 8900 with Wi-Fi enabled calling which means Yes, if you are connected to Wi-fi your calls are free every company should have it.(And we do offer t-mobile hotspots which is our wi-fi service sorry other companies(don't want to put anybody down)as you can see that phone looks like a cross breed between a curve 8900 and bold it has the top of the 8900 and the body of the Bold I'm satisfied with the 8900//Anyway Me I wouldn't download the os 5.0 software unless it shows up on www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade or blackberry.com where it shows official software upgrades Trust Me! By the way 8900 supports GSM,GPRS,EDGE,(HIGH SPEED EDGE,8900) Like Delila said please take this like a grain of salt because we don't know if it is official//For example We had a cust send us T-mobile a video of a phone he created it was a sidekick Lx and a Playstaion PsP it looked really cool and if you google it or search youtube you will see it but it never came out that was the begining of last year when the sidekick were popular(I wouldn't advise anybody to get a sidekick)Sorry T-mobile and I still love working there.

urbanjeff

Next time they should let an adult get there hands on one first. I was praying that kid to take a juice box break and let his dad take over.

sk817

What in the f*** would this kid get a non out yet blackberry?? he needs a better camera.. If it comes out for verizon i might get it and replace my storm.

DistrictDon19

So... what OS build was that running, kid?

Just curious =)

paliz

Does Verizon know how many 8830, 8330, Pearl, and disgruntled Storm users are waiting for the Niagara to finally be released? They better have a lot of inventory on hand when the 9630 hits the stores! Hurry up VZW and release it before you remove the 'Buy One Blackberry Get One Free' promotion!!! I'm specifically holding off renewing any of my qualifying phones in hopes that the 9630 is right around the corner!

sk817

It will only kill the storm if it includes wifi which might probably not include for some reason verizon is stupid. Im not saying wifi is essential but it does come handy sometimes..

Anonymoose

sk817
You are so right! I have a Blackberry through Verizon and I am tired of not having wi-fi. I am going to switch to Sprint so I can use a CDMA Blackberry with wi-fi! Happy hunting with Verizon!

stuaw11

how will that help? sprint's curve has no wifi and who's to say their niagra will either if VZW's doesnt? Odds are both wont then

Anonymoose

I thought sk817 said Verizon hates wi-fi...I figured there must be some other CDMA carrier that has a wi-fi Blackberry, since it seems to him Verizon is the only one that hates it? Does US Cellular? Alltel? Bell? Any of them!?!?? Why is it that only Verizon hates wi-fi if there are no other CDMA Blackberry's with wi-fi?!?!

Ant8989

you can look forward to the new Storm coming out at the end of the year, can't you?

mtrapani

He just blew up the Crackberry forums by insisting not once but twice that there will be wifi on this device when we have received confirmations over month-long debates that there WILL NOT BE WIFI. Ugh. Where does this kid get his info? And he thought there was an accelerometer!!! I'm sorry but that video just pissed me off.

gtstang462002

Wow a video pissed you off. Hate to be your spouse....

mtrapani

I'd hate to have this kid as my son. A good 'ol smothering would do the trick

mtrapani

This kid is a queermo

AnonymousNeat

You responded to your own comment? Neat.

Kamakanani0

Did the kid just touch the screen to change pictures? lol. Looks great though
-Storm Lover ^^

gtstang462002

He was simulating touching the screen to move the pictures while he was tapping the "n" for next.

Reparkable

Why? Why would he do that? Whats the point?

Rizzy09

this has wifi? but they said it does not have wifi, and the only device that will include wifi is the storm 2 according to many and that device is a question mark on when it comes to verizon or not but i want to strangle this kid for mixing info.

gtstang462002

No WiFi. He stated that a later version of it might have WiFi but the one that he was holding currently did not have it.

UncleSmurf

I don't think the kid really knows what he is talking about...

2.5 mm headphone jack, javelin, carbon fiber baking lol ok

Jeffdc5

its nice but i don't know i just like the size of the bold i hope rim makes an updated bold for at&t with better cam and lock button. This would be a nice cdma phone

AnonymousOk

I love the size of the Bold too! I love carrying around a phone the same size as my netbook.

Rizzy09

Well not to ruin the anticipation of the Niagara but wouldn't it be better if we deal with the storms nonsense a little bit longer with the upcoming official OS to make things a little bit better then get the Storm 2. I mean the storm 2 does have wifi and it packs a 5 megapixel camera with good features on it. Maybe ill wait maybe not.
Storm 2 - 50%
Niagara- 50%

blacktoothberry

Storm 2 may have wifi but doesn't mean Verizon will enable it

iHype

I couldn't listen to that kid, talking like they've been using a BlackBerry for a while.

Kevin tell me that was your child or nephew, or butch niece and they were reading off a script you planned out for them.

Mr Retard

this kid is a retard, he cant even make a proper video
how the hell he get his hands on one of these!!

AnonymousPlease

"This kid is a retard. He can't even make a proper video. How in the hell did he get his hands on one of these?"
Fixed....

You can barely write in English. You don't use complete sentences. You use run-on sentences and improper punctuation. Yet, you still have the nerve to talk trash about someone whom probably knows more about Blackberrys than yourself? Wow!

Mazon

This is useless, its either to close to the camera to read or the fingers are in they way of the device.

And then there's the ones who hold it so far away you can't see anything.

And hold the thing still so we can see it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morons all

blacktoothberry

worst video ever why post this shit? Javelin its the Niagara .Stop with BS stuff

delila

First of all, kid did a good job reviewing the device. Yeah he did get some facts wrong, but come on guys, get off his a**. I understand if this was Kevin doing the review and you getting all over him for giving you some wrong info. Half of you wouldn't do half as good as this kid did.
Second, why do you think this phone will be coming out on Verizon? You can clearly see a sim card in there, so I assume it will be t-mobile or att to get this phone, unless something changes along the way. So, as far as I can tell it will be gsm phone, not cdma. Verizon users, don't get your hopes up yet.
Third, as Kevin said "The BlackBerry "Niagara" 9630 has yet to be officially acknowledged by Research in Motion", so everything you see or hear should be taken with a grain of salt until it is official.

Stang68

Lol at your comment. You obviously do not know anything about how the Storm works. (The Storm is for VZW, by the way and has a SIM card.) hahaaa

Senor_Dizzle

The storm also has a sim slot and so did the 8830. This phone is most likely the replacement for the 8830 as this will probably be a CDMA world phone. Im not saying Verizon exclusive or anything but pretty much all CDMA carriers (Sprint, Verizon etc) its been seen on some inner company documents regarding the release of this phone on CDMA.

mtrapani

You're an idiot. Go to the forums. Find out for yourself.

Anonymouslyknown

LOL @ this fag harping on everyone. Jump off your high horse and do something constructive with your life instead of critiquing a phone you geek.

Give him a break, he's just a kid. Jealous that you guys don't have this phone and he does??? lol

Your serious? This kid got his hands on that phone? And he can't review for crap, wow. The phone is like 2 inches away from the camera.

v_nes

does this phone have a dual sim card? or am i seen things?

Sosai X

This video was painful to watch. Next!

VS123

This BB looks like an 8900 but bigger and sillier; Why does Verizon insist on taking a nice blackberry (ie 8300, 8900) and tweaking it to the point where its just ugly enough to be ruined?

AnonymousOh

Wow, when did Verizon start making phones for Blackberry?!?! I still thought that was RIM's job. Troll.

Kamakanani0

I just google the 9630 and on this site said its coming to verizon in may...

http://i.gizmodo.com/5175482/blackberry-niagara-9630-coming-to-verizon-i...

DTech_Update

I feel like this is just a new Javelin with OS 5. I mean look at it the features and issues like the no IM match the OS 5 stuff, and Games don't work on OS 5. I would like to see a comparison between that phone and a Javelin using OS 5 cuz OS 5 for javlin was just leaked making me suspisous. ALSO the person said "New Javelin" during the video. I have no idea why there is no wifi, and the design of the back and camera location are the only reason i can think of that that it actually might be the 9630. The fact that the person seemed to think there was an accelerometer inside the phone shows how little they know about blackberrys.

I was just watching the video again before i posted this: Was the 9630 supposed to have 3G i can't remember cuz this phone only has edge, and the fact the person didn't go into the About screen on settings is more evidence that it may not be a the 9630. ALSO the person did say there was an antenna for wifi, RIM wouldn't wait to include that in the OS it would show up in the manage connection if it was in there even if it was not functional.

Just my 2 cents on this vid.

Anonymoose

The phone is 3G, he even said it. Edge is just what he was using on Fido. Probably doesn't support HSPA, like the Storm. Javelin is a bit smaller. The kid mistakenly called it the new Javelin, but it is the Niagra. The Javelin doesn't have the same backing as the Niagra. And the "antenna" isn't for wi-fi, it's the "manage connections" icon that is on all Blackberrys, with or without wi-fi. He even clicks on it later and you can see the manage connections menu comes up.

nicoburp

AWFUL video, yerk!

What's the point on posting this? Just let it be on YouTube, alone, away from true Crackberry users!!!

Woaw and the simili-touch gesture for photos is just ridiculus. And his voice annoys me A LOT. OMG, I usually don't comment like that, but sometimes... well, the kid doesn't deserve any good comment...

pkcable

Who's badmouthing my kid?!!!!!!!!! j/k

calionheart

doesn't make sense to me.

I don't say any different between blackberry bold and the new one.

I mean what is the different!! or they just want to make money

Anonymoose

Please, learn how to write in English. The Blackberry Bold is bigger, it has a leather backing, and it's a GSM only phone... The Niagra is smaller, more comfortable in your hand, better form factor, newer OS, and is going to be a quadband GSM + CDMA Rev0 and RevA phone.... Anymore questions, please refer to google.com

Marx P

who said it's even going to be VZW?? Wonder would it piss you nerds off if you were stuck with those Storms aka (Drizzles) a lil longer.. lol j/k.. get a Bold.. should have gotten a Bold..

anom

Who is this retard! My GF 4 yr old brother could do better. And Wifi symbol........WRONG! Stick with playing with legos let the big boys handle the phones.

I need to go cut my ears off with a butter knife after listening to his voice.

wtf is this kid doing with this. hand it over to me and ill do a better review.

Until Verizon gets on the ball and offers a Bold or other Blackberry device with simultaneous voice and data services, I'm sticking with AT&T.

NastyNeil

The voice of the person in the video is a voice distortion device.

you guys now dont even have a video anymore because you guys are all stupid mother fuckers and are really dumb im not fucking proffesional and this is my first review you asssholes and you guys can all go to hell

mr.saving

Boohoo..If your not a kid, than why are you crying your eyes out? Why do you care what people on a site think of your video review?

If it bothers you so much, the next time daddy hands you an un released device, make a better fucking video review!

don't review things you don't understand. Stick to reviewing u're favorite iPhone themes (yes, i actually did look at his youTube page...sigh...)

you are a kid if you cant vote... who would a 15 year-old call too... your mommy to ask when dinner is ready... maybe daddy for a ride... ohh too bad they are at RIM making devices for people who pay their bills themselves...

Yup video is removed, from previous posts looks like I didn't miss anything.

This video has been removed by the user.

willy9e

Nice job. Way to fail. Like how mature you were on youtube. :P

Oilersboy

I don't buy this video as 9630 and it looks pretty much like 8900.

Bla1ze

It's clearly a 9630, good review bad review, whatever..it's a 9630.

mrammediait

Nerds... quit crying about your phone..You're the one who purchased it..then you complain about it..then you get up here and almost piss on yourself abou a lil video about a phone that may or may not release this year..and on which csrrier? YOU DON'T KNOW.. if you bought a Storm and don't like it, throw it in the trash. You VZW folks kill me. You were so excited about finally getting a new phone in your lineup, and look at you now.. the same nuts who ran out the 1st day to buy the Storm are up here now thinking this phone is their SAVIOUR.. save yourself the trouble and headache. GO back to your Curve or switch to another carrier! NO?? Ok then, sit here another 4 months, 19days then waiting. Enough Said.. read between the lines

Vinay Patel

wow this video is so pointless. person sounds like a 10 year old boy. and is explaining he basic things that anyone would know. and that is not the blackberry javelin.

BigSlim

The only time I have seen her touch the screen is when you used the pictures. My question, is this also have the touch screen capabilities?

Bla1ze

No, no touch screen ability.

Read the links in the article, You'll get a better look. An informed look.

Oilersboy

9630 is pretty much like 8900 so it is hard to prove and where this guy get early 9630 before public release ? the only different between 8900 and 9630 is OS version and 9630 have faster processor than 8900.

Bla1ze

It's not hard to prove..one look and anyone can see it's a 9630, keypad, siderails, SIM slot..if you wanna think that it quite possibly may NOT be a 9630, feel free but is indeed.

Also, I'm quite positive RIM employees may have kids cosidering he has lots of other BlackBerry devices, look at some of the other videos.

Although, after this video, Dad/Mom may no longer be employed by RIM.

Nickreich

I wish my storm navigated as fast as the 9630. Especially through the media menu.

threedeckstew

this phone is just a smaller bold but with less functions!
whats the point of it?

amazinglygraceless

Whatever info I need to find about this device I'll have to
find elsewhere. This had to be the absolute worst review
video ever. 2.5 minutes in and i had to give up.

Just terrible.

experiment 626

I learned more by just watching the video on mute.

cpuking2009

does a 15 year old (probly younger) get to play with this?

Xopher

It is clear that the reviewer is a member here. He has his hands on a Niagara (definitely a Niagara based on the keyboard). No matter his age, he seems to know about Blackberries (his other review shows the Parel Flip with the Niagara, so he has access to more than one). So, here are some straight forward questions to the video maker:

You say this phone will have Wifi, yet if you look at the about screen, and the icons displayed, there isn't anything to show WiFi. How can there be WiFi on the final release when it is not present on these pre-releases?

Which OS are you running on that Niagara? If I remember correctly, 4.7.1.10 pretty much died at boot up. 4.7.1.15 is what Kevin was running. What is your Niagara running?

original00

Why are people getting on this boy for no good reason? Why does it matter how or where he got it from? Does everyone ask everyone that posts a new beta OS where and how they got it? Like someone posted earlier, are you even considering his age as you condemn his video as the worst ever (I wasn't aware that people went on you tube to view professionally done videos anyway). People need to get a life if they gain some kind of satisfaction for flaming someone because he has something you wish you had. How did you expect him to react? Shouldn't everyone be at least happy that they got another look at a the highly anticipated Niagara.Everyone just take it easy and put the torches down.

mr.saving

There were plenty of good reasons to be annoyed with the video.I won't list them, but they are in the previous posts.

Bottom line for FUTURE video reviewers...We want to see more of this phone,OS,and etc...just be prepared.Do a good review, and we'll think it's great.Do an "ok" review, get flamed like jr did in this one.

experiment 626

Well maybe he should have taken some time to learn exactly what he's reviewing.Starting with the proper RIM codename, perhaps.Nice glimpses of some of the OS but way too much misinformation about the 9630.

Crackberrykills

I do not think this was actually a "kid." Look at his hands; what kid has polished, manicured finger nails. In addition, his/her hands were massive. Those were adult hands for sure imho. The voice was altered most likely. As far as the video goes, it was not of the same quality you have come to expect from Kevin or JReel for that matter, but it was not that bad.

stevenberry54

Whoa, he says it has a 20 megapixel camera, wow. i'm impressed lol! I'd most likely switch to it from the storm, but my main issue is that I wish it had wifi... then it would probably be the perfect device. of course everyone's argument is... who needs wifi with verizons fast network. true, but i'd prefer faster speeds when i get home, oh and at work... and at panera and everywhere else! lol

--
Edit, heard it wrong, my bad. I still think my wifi statement is valid though! lol

Oilersboy

I never believe this video that I saw on other link and I still don't buy this device as 9630 because it is not offical release yet. I'm very sure this device is pretty much like curve 8900. so far , no one has confirmed that 9630 will be released to the public anytime soon but otherwise all I know is a person who works for RIM in europe did confirmed that there will be blackberry storm 2 which will be released by end of this year or early 2010

my advice for everyone here is be patient and wait and see which blackberry devices will come out later this year and then anyone here can make any comments about any devices.

ericsmcdonald

But I don't think I'm going to take anything away from this review other than the reviewer didn't know the word for "period" during the demonstration of hitting the spacebar twice.

Otherwise I really want the device lol!

Oilersboy

I will believe when I heard that 9630 will come out sometimes this summer then I will be totally satisfied. it is same for windows for computers or any new tech thing.

I believe that when I get my first ever blackberry device in 2 months from now from bell mobility will turns out just fine for me and will work smoothly. so I do not need to worry about this from now till June.

LuisT

I love how you guys rant on the poor kid. Its not his fault he got a pre-released BlackBerry before everyone else. He didn't have to record this video for you guys, but he was nice enough to show the community what he had.

BoobieBerry

I agree LuisT - jeez... people just go 'off' - sort of crazy. You seem to be one of the reasonable souls on here - yay! :)

Haters: It's not the end of the world if you don't like the vid, think the kid is "voice distorted", etc. JUST CHILL. Take whatever you can, and or can't from the vid and... BE.

PEACE

amazinglygraceless

Nice enough? Nice enough would have been knowing what he/she
(I couldn't tell) was talking and being able to err, umm, uhh
articulate it.

I don't care about the reviewers age or the fact that the
device was Pre-release. But is forming a coherent sentence
and actually knowing what the fuck you are talking about too
much to ask.

For some of you, I guess not.

miamiboy305

who gave this 9 year old that phone ?

obmotobmot

now we know what George Bush is doing during his retirement.

tipster0795

I just had a meeting today with our Sprint sales rep and their RIM sales rep today. The RIM rep first handed me the 8350i, which doesn't impress me much. Of course, it is running OS 4.6, but the device itself is fairly thicker than the standard 8300-series Curve.

Then out comes the new toy! The BB 9630 is a very nice and light device that WILL be replacing the current 8830, as it does have CDMA and GSM/UMTS radios in it. Wifi is available and can connect to corporate wireless networks as well as standard home wifi.

For a release time frame I got "within the next few months". They didn't mention if this is a Sprint exclusive, so it would be safe to speculate that Verizon may be getting this same model about the same time.

Also, when I mentioned that the trackball was one of the best additions to a BlackBerry, the RIM rep only said, "just wait" to see what comes later. I can't think of any improvement over the trackball than the optical "mouse" sensor on my Omnia (Storm for work). But I do hope that the rumored "touch-screen BB w/ full KBD" will have a slide-out keyboard like the HTC's and such.

So for those on Sprint, save your upgrade for the 9630!

VZW users like me will just have to keep our fingers crossed until someone confirms or announces that release.

For a release time frame I got "within the next few months". They didn't mention if this is a Sprint exclusive, so it would be safe to speculate that Verizon may be getting this same model about the same time.

Also, when I mentioned that the trackball was one of the best additions to a BlackBerry, the RIM rep only said "just wait" to see what comes later. I can't think of any improvement over the trackball than the optical "mouse" sensor on my Omnia (BB Storm for work). But I do hope that the rumored "touch-screen BB w/ full KBD" will have a slide-out keyboard like the HTC's and such, and be the next revision of the Storm.

So for those on Sprint, save your upgrade for the 9630!

VZW users like me will just have to keep our fingers crossed until someone confirms or announces that release.

Broke my charging port on my curve this morning and had to drop $20 on a stupid desktop charger, which I'll be forced to use for a month. The Niagara can't come out any sooner-hopefully vzw will have gotten rid of all their curves so when I go to collect my insurance they'll be forced to upgrade me..worked last time ha

Did anybody catch the fact that this is not a Verizon phone? Notice the "EDGE" signal in the top right corner. This appears to be an AT&T Bold????
