Android Apps

I'm sure you've seen that since BlackBerry 10.2.1 hit the scene we've decided to feature a few more Android apps and games that were not previously available to us. I've also noticed in both the post comments and in the CrackBerry forums that some of you aren't too happy about this — and we get that.

Whilst everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I'm slightly baffled as to why you wouldn't want to know about a great game/app that runs on BlackBerry 10, even if it's Android. We've had Android ports running on BB10 for some time, but it's only been since 10.2.1 was released that I've noticed the negative remarks.

Sure, using the likes of Snap, the Amazon Appstore or APK Train may not be ideal for some users as traditionally we are all loyal and want to download our apps from BlackBerry World. But the fact of the matter is that if we find a great game/app that happens to be an Android one, but runs beautifully on BlackBerry 10, surely it's our job to let you know?

Earlier, Microsoft announced that their Microsoft Office Mobile was going free on Android and iOS while ditching the need for a subscription in order to use it for 'view-only' purposes. Since then, we've had people emailing us and letting us know that since Android apps can run on BlackBerry 10, we should post about it or asking if it works on the BlackBerry 10 Android runtime.

Real Table Tennis

We've featured our fair share of tennis games over the last year or so for BlackBerry 10, but not table tennis that I can recall. Real Table Tennis is another great game that unfortunately you won't find in BlackBerry World (at the time of publication), but you can grab it from the third party Android store Snap.

A big deal for many Android users who have now updated to BBM 2.0 is the ability to now use BBM Voice. This is also great for us existing BlackBerry users, who have had BBM Voice for some time, as we can now utilize the feature with our buddies who use Android phones.

It's the Android version, hence the 10.2.1 part, but it works perfectly and is totally awesome if simulator games are your thing.

Now that BlackBerry 10.2.1 is available there has been an influx of folks wanting to know if their favorite app works when the Android version is loaded. To help keep things a bit more organized, we figured we should put together our very own CrackBerry list of apps that are known to be working or 'mostly' working on BlackBerry 10.2.1.

Rather than picking just 50 or so random apps though, we dug through the forums and comments section to find apps people really wanted and tested them out. Of course, there is some exceptions because even though a TON of folks want banking apps, we don't exactly have accounts all over the world to test those out.

In addition to this post, we also set up a thread in the CrackBerry Forum for you all to share what apps you have working as well. As long as you all keep telling us apps that you're wondering about, we'll keep checking them out and testing them. If those apps are working we'll add them to the list.

Now that BlackBerry 10.2.1 is out to a wider audience and folks are installing Android apps onto their BlackBerry 10 devices, there has been a ton of Android related questions popping up on the CrackBerry Twitter account and in the CrackBerry Forums. One of the more frequent questions asked comes after folks have installed an Android app that requires Google Play services such as Google Hangouts, Google+, Google Play Music and even some possibly unexpected apps such as Yahoo Weather.

Jan 29, 2014 Having issues with your Android Runtime not working after the 10.2.1 update? Read this!

Peek

Amidst the excitement of BlackBerry 10.2.1 rolling out across carriers, there's been several reports from users who have updated that their Android runtime is no longer working as it once was before the update. It's hard to say how many people this issue is affecting but it's causing their Android apps to not load or otherwise not work right and that's a bit of a bummer and frustrating, especially if all was well before the update.

Understandably, a lot of folks have taken it upon themselves to try and correct the issue by reloading their OS or attempting to load a different Android runtime on their device but we're asking that if you're doing that, to please stop trying and help us gather up some log files from your device that would be beneficial in helping BlackBerry get to the root of the problem and address it accordingly.

The process is easy, all you have to do is generate a log file on your device using the instructions we've posted in the CrackBerry Forums and attach the log file to your post. One thing we ask though is that no one who has messed with their runtime take part. Only those who have upgraded, found it not to be working correctly and have not tried to fix it by loading leaks, loading a different runtime or whatever else. Only post your log if it's 'naturally' just not working.

Add your log file in the CrackBerry Forums

When BBM was released for Android it was limited to devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and above. That left quite a few people without considering the fact that as of January 8th, there was still 21 percent of all Android users still running Gingerbread. No matter though because the folks at BBM have been working on hard on a special release for those individuals and are now moving into an external beta ahead of the launch in February. If you have a Android device running Gingerbread, best to create a BlackBerry Beta Zone profile.

If you're running one of the latest leaks and looking to cash in on a little Christmas cheer, Amazon may have your answer. Their current promo will net you a free $5 credit good towards any app or game in their extensive catalog. All you need to do is download any app or game from the Amazon app store -- even a free one.

This does come with a few caveats however. First off you'll need to be running a leaked version of OS 10.2 on your device that allows for APK installs. If you're good there, make sure you have the latest version of the Amazon app store installed on your device. After that just fire up the app store, log in and download whatever you want. Shortly after (anywhere from one minute to an hour) you'll receive an email that the credit was added to your account. See the full details here.

If you're all in on loading up Android APK files on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone then there's a pretty good chance you've already given the APK downloader app Snap a go. The developer behind it, James Paul Muir, has now released a new version and made it available for download to those who wish to sideload it.

  • Infinite scrolling of Lists and Search results (yay more than 20 results!!)
  • Fix for small text in Recent Changes
  • General performance improvements on App page
  • Snap acts as invocation target for Google Play links (must long press and use "Open in")
  • New Feature: View "Google Play Library" available apps associated with your account that aren't installed on the device
  • Added Privacy Policy under "Help" (swipe down from top)

That's quite a few changes that make getting up and grabbing your USB cable worth it. If you do load it up, keep in mind it is a beta release so if you come across some bugs be sure to swing by the CrackBerry Forums and check to see if they've been noted already. You can grab the latest BAR file from the link below.

You can choose to send private images and/or videos to your friends where they'll show up in their private inbox.

We're not totally sure that it's an alternative to sending files over BBM or even just plain old MMS, but it's always nice to have options.
