Time for some athletics for your BlackBerry 10 smartphone with The Activision Decathlon and as well as it being a free download it's a great little game. As you would expect, the game is made up of ten events including the 100m, 400m, 1500m, 110m Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Javelin, Shot Put and Discus.
Once you start playing for the first time you'll be given instructions on how to use the screen gestures on each level - and they vary depending on which event you are taking part in. For example: if it's just a running race, you tap the screen constantly to get up to full speed and then perform a swipe to the right for an extra surge over the finish line. Or with the high jump, you once again tap to make your character run and then perform an upwards swipe when you need to jump.
From the main menu you'll see that there are three choices - Decathlon, Training and Challenge. The first two are straight forward, but with the Challenge option you are meant to be able to compete against other online player. For reasons unknown I couldn't get this part to work. Maybe, there just wasn't anyone else online? Let's see if that changes after this post hits the web and people start playing the game.
There is also a shop within the game which you'll be prompted to visit. Here you can buy Gear, Energy, Training and Coins. As you progress through the different leagues you'll earn coins which can be spent on the aforementioned items.
The great thing about the game is that each event is different in some way - even the running. With the 100 meters you can just run as fast as you like but with the longer races you need to pace yourself so you don't get too tired. Once again, controlling your pace will be explained when you get to the event.
