Miss the latest episode of Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D or just want to catch up on Dancing with the Stars? Now you can, right on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone. ABC has released two new native BlackBerry 10 apps, ABC Player and ABC Family, that offer streaming the television networks content on the go provided you live in the U.S and are using either a BlackBerry Z10 or BlackBerry Q10.

The apps are nicely laid out for either device and have quite a few features packed into them such as control over what quality streaming you want to use as well as whether or not you want to access that content over the cellular network. Plus, they've also included their schedule line ups so you know when your favorite shows are on.

I've given the ABC Player app a go and was quite pleased with it, though I didn't test the HDMI out capability to see if that works. Sound off in the comments if you give that a go. Remember though, U.S. only and hopefully someone will flip the switch on Z30 support as well soon enough.

Good for BlackBerry. Hope this sort of stuff keeps up. We also got Royal Bank of Canada today, which is a major app. Personally, I couldn't care less about applications like this one.

Love these native apps, very well made and videos play great too.

It would be cool if Sony LIV adapted their Android app if I was in India.

ebbes36

US only?! For "copyright reasons" I know, but it'd be really nice to have it outside the US too. ABC on the go, nice :-)

Easy peasy, get Witopia VPN service, then use one of their USA ipsec vpn gateways on your BB10 phone. You may need to turn off your mobile/cell network connection for the app to show, and download the app via wifi.

hauger

What is this black magic you talk of? I'm assuming it's not an app available on BB10, so how do I make it work? Is it something I do from the browser or via my home WiFi?

Posted via CB10 using my Zed Ten

Grizzli

Nope not an app, via Settings>Network Connections>VPN on your BB10 phone (also works on Playbooks): https://www.witopia.net/support/setting-up-and-using-your-vpn/blackberry...

Of course, you'd need a sub to their service.

Thunderbuck

For all the talk of the company's imminent demise, more apps seem to keep popping up. Weird, huh?

bradu1

Exactly!

Exactly my thought, but good for BlackBerry, good for the moral...every small positive will push the microphone a little farther from the fat lady...

Posted via CB10

SK122387

Thunderbuck, you know as well as I do that these major app releases are ALL part of management's secret plan to sink the stock price to make it easier to sell!!!

;)

Posted via CB10

.giggz.

How do you sink the market by adding content and big names and apps?

Posted via CB10

KidCaboose

Because. Most people want BlackBerry to die. Bringing big name apps shows that management is trying to keep BlackBerry alive. This means management isn't listening to the majority of people, and should be fired. This makes people's confidence in BlackBerry's demise crumble, and the stocks drop. This makes people make their last post about never buying another BlackBerry product, and then check back every five minutes to see if anyone can support them in blaming anyone but themselves. This makes Prem Watsa happy.

Posted via CB10

KidCaboose

Oh wait. Maybe I should have also out a wink. At the end. Of my.

I didn't even know this app was coming, so I can't even say it was "worth the wait." What a nice surprise.

This is a great native app, and I can only hope that other Disney-owned apps make their way over sometime soon, because this app is a perfect example of what BlackBerry needs.

Thank you, BlackBerry and ABC!

Awesome app! Loaded and tried it out. All the prime time shows are available. The video quality selection set to high gives a very good picture on my 60 inch Aquos. Only wish an option for HD streaming was available.

Overall, a very good app. Thank you ABC for supporting BlackBerry 10. Hoping we get more native apps for this platform from your parent company.

Turnda643

Works great via HDMI to my Aquos from my Q10. Only thing is cause of the screen ratio on the Q10 you don't get a 16:9 picture. The picture sits within a black frame. But definitely not a deal breaker.

AnimalPak200

You can watch via HDMI?? I tried hooking my Z10 to our 60" and the app detects the HDMI connection and gives an error stating that playback is not allowed on secondary screens. I'm still running 10.1.

Wonder if that restriction applies only to the Z10 or what.

Copyright. Go to ABC's website outside the US and you can't watch content on it, either.

In Canada you can sometimes find ABC's shows through other networks and providers (Global, Bell, Rogers, etc.)

Miss_Hawkins

Awesome! Been waiting for this app! Thanks ABC and thanks Crackberry for letting us know what's out there.

Meh why can't the BBC iplayer be an app rather then a link to the website if they could code an app for BBos qnx should be a dream lol. :( ah well I don't actually see the use of streaming TV to a phone. The screens too small but this is good for people who do :)

The only problem is that mainstream media is still only reporting on Blackberry's demise. They will only report the bad news so consumers who do not come to this site will only read the bad news.

This cool. Nice to be able to watch Nightline and 20/20 on the go:yes:

BerryPadfoot

I tried both the regular ABC app and the ABC Family apps nd in both there's a relay with the audio so the audio doesn't match up with the video. A noticeably long delay. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Posted via CB10

cjterminator

Not seeing any such issues, which model of phone/carrier? Watching on wifi or network?

BerryPadfoot

I have a Z10 with Verizon. I've tried while on a strong wifi connection and over network and in both cases the audio doesn't match the video. It's like the video is going faster than the audio because while they start out synced, after 3 or 4 seconds there is such a noticeable drag you can't even watch it really. Thoughts?

Posted via CB10

Genghis2k3

You may need to change the video quality, or you're wifi may be the cause.

Scooped these up :)
Thanks guys!

It works. This is great. I'm looking at getting rid of cable. I have on line streaming, but ABC is near impossible to get over the air, so that and premium channels have impacted my decision, plus FIOS offering a sweet deal. This app and the microHDMI changes that. http://pfcsystems.wordpress.com/2013/07/20/netlix-vs-huluplus-vs-amazon-...

Just downloaded it, it's buttery smooth!

THIS is what I've been waiting for! I can watch all my ABC shows in the office and just give the excuse that I'm "pulling up a presentation" on my phone.

Cafeina

LOL Nice one. I'll have to use that some time. :-)

sfcramsey

Works great, however HDMI support is disabled on my Z10 and I am running the latest software (10.2.0.1767).

daddyrhodes

Great app get for BlackBerry with more to come. Okay it's time for BlackBerry to market the heck out of their phones. The z30 has to get the marketing behind it taught the fact more and more great apps are here and on the way. You can do it blackberry!!!

ABC Player and ABC Family - two very smooth additions to the BB10 lineup. Excellent!

Now they need to get the WatchESPN and Watch Disney Jr. since they are all part of the Disney/ABC group.

I love blackberry products and services, hate to read and see what is going on with them... people want them to fail, but I have trust it will turn around and when that happens, Apple and Samsung better watch out. I have been with BlackBerry since the beginning and still with them now... get rid of the CEO and put someone who is passionate on making this communication company successful

This is a fantastic app to have. The best part being the news channels you can watch besides the shows. I downloaded both, but I think I'll keep the player. I have no interest in the Family shows. Good to have both available though. This recent surge of apps is simply overwhelming and I'll admit, a little shocked.

That is the problem, worst support for blackberry is in the US, but a lot of the big apps are for folks in the US only.

Fantastic!

On my wish list is an offline feature. Then I could watch when I don't have a good wifi connection like on the train or in the air.

Posted via CB10

Cool, this'll free up space on the DVR, and save me from downloading episodes from the net and transferring to sd card.
Now I can just run app and plug in hdmi cable.

Techno-Emigre

What am I missing? Where can I choose if WIFI or cell network? And how are some of you able to use HDMI out? I am Verizon official 10.1. Can you use HDMI on 10.2?
Thanks for supporting BlackBerry ABC! Great app.

Posted via CB10 with *Z* BEST!

Genghis2k3

If you're not on a strong wifi connection you get a prompt to allow the stream over your cellular service (and a warning that additional charges may apply). If the wifi is strong enough, it plays with no prompt needed. It does not play on cellular unless you hit the "enable" button when prompted.

Also on 10.1

This is fanastic. There are so many good apps coming to BB. They are not getting a fair shake. If you remember when the Iphone first started advertising (those Big NY Times full page ads). BB needs to start doing the same. All it needs to get are the remaining key Social Networks Android ports for 10.2 (which I already have them all as sideloads), and then start highlighting the Apps, Games, and the difference in the UX

Cafeina

This is an excellent sign! I'm so happy that major players are making apps for BB10. :-)

Great app. Glad to see more media content providers getting on board. Netflix could easily create a native video player for BlackBerry 10, much less porting their Android JellyBean app.

Make sure to download and watch some ABC shows to prove BlackBerry users use their phones for recreation too! Help keep app usage up to encourage more vendors to develop apps.
